What on earth did de Blasio think would happen… — 46 Comments

  1. “Unconscionable!” I love Ed Driscoll’s comment on this over at Instapundit (posted @ 1:45):

WELL YES. IF THEY HAD CONSCIENCES, THEY WOULDN’T BE CRIMINALS

    Point. Set. Match!

  2. The juxtaposition of “de Blasio” and “think” is, essentially, a unicorn fart.

Or perhaps, like love, the triumph of hope over experience.

As they like to say NYers like to say, “Fuggehdaboudit!”

(The problem is, of course, that they themselves DO fuggehdaboudit, which is why ultra-destructive, state-of-the-art, cutting-edge morons like de Blasio get elected almost as regularly as the phases of the moon.)

    Ah yes, love….

To be sure, New Yorkers, like Chicagoans and other lucky urbanites around the country (and globe) are basking in the love of their socialist, pseudo-ideologue—aka delusional—-mayors.

And then they scratch their heads and ask, “Why is this happening to us?”

    Why indeed!

File under: Thou shalt love the criminal because he/she shall inherit the earth.

  3. “What on earth did de Blasio think would happen…What on earth did de Blasio think would happen…”

This. Now there is a new “crisis” to which he can respond with some democratic-socialist measures passed in the current emergency that would never get passed otherwise.

  4. The voters ELECTED him. He unleashed his stupid. I got no damns left to give. He is THEIR problem.

  5. 50 have been caught-prob more than 45 crimes . The article mentioned one guy arrested 5 times already. And these are only the ones who have been caught.

  6. Bill Wilhelm,a.k.a. Bill DeBlasio, showed his intelligence early on by his support of the Sandinistas. Is there ANY time Mayor Bill has made an intelligent decision?

  7. Why do New Yorkers elect such idiots and put other idiots into administrative positions? I read that the Mass Transit Board in order to save money cut the number of subway runs and the number of cars to keep them filled. And people are saying this was a main cause of the spread of the corona virus.

Does something in the air there damage people’s brain cells?

  8. No! He’s ours – we are all shut down because the media lives in NY City and is paid by China. So the rest of the country, including crazed California and marginal Illinois is shut down to save NYC (and Cuomo and de Blasio’s careers). NYC IS NOT SHUT DOWN. Until they shut down the subway, they are going to have out of this world death toll – and they won’t do that. Apparently the Metro Commission that runs the transit system decided there would be fewer riders, so lets save money and eliminate some of the trains, there by packing virus ridden folks even closer together than usual. So I guess the wannabe dictators had no control over that, right?

  9. “Since only 300 of the released prisoners had originally been convicted for violent crimes, can we assume that perhaps up to 15% of that group (45 over 300) has already managed to transgress?”

Well, yes “we can’t say.” but that only goes so far. If you are released for being convicted of a “non-violent crime” it doesn’t mean you have not done violent crimes before the current criminal conviction. It also does not mean you have not done violent things that you have not been discovered and arrested for. Many of the “non-violent” crimes are for drug offenses and drug offenders are not all soft little bong smoking bunnies who lie about on the couch eating chocolates all day. Many drug offenders are in fact capable of and obviously have done violent offenses.

One would hope that previous offenses were taken into consideration, but I tend to doubt in it the corrupt world of NYC prosecutors.

  10. Rikers Island is primarily a pretrial detention facility for people who can’t post bail (or are held without bail), so the inmates who were released generally had not been convicted, just arrested.

  11. Good points by Israel and G. vanderleun.

In Chicago, we have seen many criminals use the new low or zero bail system to commit not one, but two or more crimes in the space of a couple weeks. Some even have ankle monitors when committing crime #2 or #3.

  12. “It has often been remarked during this COVID crisis that leftist governments have been imprisoning non-criminals in their homes (and sometimes arresting them for violations), and at the same time letting criminals out of prison. Indeed.” Neo

This. Living it here in Los Angeles. Pure madness.

  13. We were in New York, February 20 through the 23rd. We stayed at the Trump International Hotel. As we were waiting for our Taxi to head to the airport, the Door Attendant (a gentleman, about 68 or so) spoke with us about this. He said the city was being destroyed by this action by de Blasio. Was very down about it.

  14. Sharon W,

If I remember correctly, DeBlasio was elected by a majority when only 28% of eligible voters voted. If the doorman voted (but not for DeBlasio), then I have sympathy for him. If he voted for DeBlasio or didn’t bother to vote at all, well, elections have consequences.

  15. Of course none of this matters as all these clowns in far left cities and states will be easily re-elected.

  16. Republicans should, but won’t, be calling out ALL Dems as stupid based on Mayor Bill’s silly ideas, and results.

His “stupid model” says that most criminals didn’t mean it, and won’t do it again. That might even be true (for a majority) BUT it fails to say how many crimes would be committed by the criminals let go.

I’m actually thinking it’s time to get more focused on the “models” and the assumptions people make. Every “assumption” is an input into some kind of model. Garbage In – Garbage Out.

Which implies, tho doesn’t prove, that if the model has Garbage Out, the assumption going in was … (QED) Garbage. (It’s not proven because the model might be garbage: Perfect Data into a Garbage model results in likely Garbage out — tho it might, by chance, result in an accurate prediction.)

“Thinking would happen” actually means “What did HIS model predict”. I studied models. To me, every prediction looks like it came from a model.
(Maybe every problem IS a nail, whether I have a have a hammer or not! ??)

Sort of by definition – a model is something that accepts some inputs, and some decision, and predicts some outputs. Much like Thinking.

Maybe de Blasio did NOT have a model – because he was NOT thinking.

  17. “The article mentioned one guy arrested 5 times already.”
That’s right. NYC has that revolving “no bail” thing for most crimes.

Has NYC shutdown gun shops? That’s the part that I love: let the criminals out, forbid the citizens the means to defend themselves. Well, I love that plus the part about putting citizens in the now-empty jails for the “crime” of insufficient social distancing or for participating in peaceful anti-shutdown protests.

  18. Many times someone who is high on drugs and arrested for Attempted Murder charges will plead to the lower crime so that the District Attorney can get a conviction and clear the workload. A potential murderer is released as someone who was arrested on a non-violent drug charge.

“Annie get your gun” ….. change the wording in that phrase to fit your personal needs.

  19. John D’oh

Many times someone who is high on drugs and arrested for Attempted Murder charges will plead to the lower crime so that the District Attorney can get a conviction and clear the workload. A potential murderer is released as someone who was arrested on a non-violent drug charge.

Very good point about those imprisoned for “non-violent” offenses. DAs want to clear cases ASAP, so a plea down to a lesser offense instead of an expensive, drawn-out jury trial is the choice. (Recall that even with speeding things up with plea bargains, there is usually a delay of a year between arrest and conviction. That is, molasses is being speeded up.)

  20. The chat about DeBlasio “not thinking” is 1) wrong, and 2) beside the point,
    Of course DeBlasio thinks!
But his thinking is totally immoral. He has no more morals than Satan.
And he is not alone there in NYC. Look at superintendent of schools and his statements: Carranza. Thank goodness DeBlasio pulled him out of Texas! But Houston still has lots of evildoers, going more Democratic every day.

  21. This is the classic “fool v. knave” question. I maintain most leftist politicians are knaves (De Blasio, certainly). Most lefty-inclined voters are fools. Dangerous fools (there is little as reckless as an ‘educated’ progressive, ensconced in her little lefty bubble, but convinced she truly understands the world), but fools (easily manipulated) nonetheless.

  22. I start to grieve for the next generation or two; then I remember, they are the ones who are electing these (choose one) A. clowns, B. charlatans, C. All of the above.

The Governor of California, who seems to be popular, stated that he was allocating $125 million, presumably from his slush fund, to make stimulus payments to people who are in California illegally. I cannot find a definitive figure for the unemployment numbers for law abiding, tax paying citizens in California at the moment; but the numbers are huge. I have neither seen, nor heard a negative comment about this travesty. Wrote to my State Representatives, and received boiler plate garbage in return that doesn’t even mention the issue. We have become a society of poorly led sheep.

Well, in every negative, there is a positive for someone. At the moment it is possible to drive at normal freeway speeds in SoCal because the commuters are locked down.

  23. De Blasio is also telling people to rat on their neighbors, to send in a photo when they go out so that he can issue a $1000 fine for disobeying the stay at home order. Sounds like East Germany in the time of the Stassi.

    BUT

He is not interested in the homeless moving off the streets and now living in the subway cars, side by side. Hospital workers take those subways, and must mix with the disease-ridden homeless during their commute.

Cannot get $1000 from a homeless person, so not interested.
Only interested in screwing the taxpayer.

  24. Let’s also not forget that this Mayor is the one who stated publicly that he taught his son to be wary of the cops.

If the mayor, as a parent, wants to teach his son that – fine. But, to publicly declare that cops cannot be trusted is not something a “thinking” politician would do.

So, nope, this mayor cannot think beyond his leftist viewpoint.

  25. They used to refer to sociopaths and psychopaths as Moral Imbeciles…
Blasio just let kindred spirits roam free..
    sociopath releases psychopath
guilt free of course, as they dont have guilt

  26. Francesca
    beginning?
Ive been saying it for a decade…

the fewer children the prior people have thanks to feminism which finds abortion to be life saving, the more problems we have like the countries we import from to replace people who didnt have kids.. women are not the future of anything, they dont have enough children.. foreign women are the future… but they are more stay at home than modern feminsts… i know.. blame it on wealth… its not feminism, its wealth… so make em poor and the ladies will have kids again?

how you gonna keep em down on the farm, after they seen Paris?

  27. Hey Bill, there’s a place for “buckling down” on monitoring and supervising criminals. It’s called prison.

  28. Warren Wilhelm II is also telling people to rat on their neighbors, to send in a photo when they go out so that he can issue a $1000 fine for disobeying the stay at home order. Sounds like East Germany in the time of the Stassi.

    makes more sense now

  29. who was the journalist who couldn’t understand why the crime rate went down with increased incarceration?

  30. “Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society’s understanding.”

–Henri Ducard, portrayed by Liam Neeson, Batman Begins

  31. Every person who died from or with covid has been blamed on President Trump saying the word “hoax” and he will surely get impeached again for causing all of these deaths, yet DiBlasio will not face any criticism for any person hurt or killed by prisoners he personally released.

  32. Herr Obergruppenfuhrer Warren Wilhelm the Zwei, like all good socialists, realizes that creating chaos and disorder provides them with the excuse to obtain or increase their control and power.

EVERYTHING a leftist does is planned and calculated.

Assuming they do not know what they are doing or that they are ignorant of this or that, or were unaware of the possible consequences of their policies, is a HUGE mistake right minded folks often make.
Lefties know exactly what they are doing and they know what the outcomes will be.

Never underestimate, ever, what lefties do.
They know exactly what they are doing.

  33. “who was the journalist who couldn’t understand why the crime rate went down with increased incarceration?”

    the “Fox Butterfield Effect.”

  34. To be more precise, I think Fox Butterfield had bought into the concept that the incarceration of Persons of Color was not due to higher crime rates among that population sector. It was due, in his estimation, to animus against other races by white cops, white prosecutors supported by white voters and so on.

So his question was intended to be more along the lines of “how come increases in unfair and unjustified incarcerations result in less crime?”

If my recollection is correct on that point.

  35. While we are on the topic of NYC mayor, a comment from another blog:

“New York City is building its own strategic reserve of medical equipment for the coronavirus pandemic, including surgical gowns, test kits and ventilators because “we can’t depend on the federal government,” Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.”

Just to confirm: this IS the guy who auctioned off the city’s existing stockpile, right?

  36. I was trying to understand the ‘Warren Wilhelm’ references, so I consulted Wiki.

If I understand things correctly, ‘Joe the Plumber’ should be mocked for using his actual middle name, and Donald Trump should be mocked because his *grandfather* changed the surname.

DeBlasio, on the other hand, changed his name *twice*. The oracle John Stewart was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, but never mind.

Can anyone help me understand this?

  37. Humanity are slaves under the Deep State.

The Authorities determine what you are allowed to do. They took 1984’s Freedom=Slavery to heart.
