I wonder who Nancy Pelosi thought this would appeal to
I guess ice cream lovers everywhere. But the “let them eat cake” comparisons are irresistible and inevitable (although you probably won’t see them emanating from the left):
We all have found our ways to keep our spirits up during these trying times. Mine just happens to fill up my freezer. #LateLateShow pic.twitter.com/dqA32d5lU1
— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) April 14, 2020
As Nick Arama notes at Red State:
As we reported earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is bragging about blocking additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program that’s been saving jobs.
But, no skin off her nose, right? She’s not about to lose her job (well, we can hope, come November, but it is San Francisco so chances are small). What does she care if millions are thrown out of theirs, apparently.
The House beat it out of Washington and wouldn’t be meeting on anything until May 4, “absent an emergency,” says Democrat House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. Not like we’re in the middle of an emergency and people might need that money to help stay afloat.
Many commenters have pointed out that those two fridges cost a ton of money. But Pelosi has plenty.
She seems to like fridge metaphors. The video reminded me of this quote of hers from ten years ago, speaking of Obamacare:
It’s like the back of the refrigerator. You see all these wires and the rest. All you need to know is, you open the door. The light goes on.
And yes, I’m aware that Marie Antoinette didn’t really say “let them eat cake.” Just shows you how a bad press and fake news can follow you for centuries:
Lady Antonia Fraser, author of a biography of the French queen, believes the quote would have been highly uncharacteristic of Marie-Antoinette, an intelligent woman who donated generously to charitable causes and, despite her own undeniably lavish lifestyle, displayed sensitivity towards the poor population of France.
That aside, what’s even more convincing is the fact that the “Let them eat cake” story had been floating around for years before 1789. It was first told in a slightly different form about Marie-Thérèse, the Spanish princess who married King Louis XIV in 1660. She allegedly suggested that the French people eat “la croûte de pâté” (or the crust of the pâté). Over the next century, several other 18th-century royals were also blamed for the remark, including two aunts of Louis XVI. Most famously, the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau included the pâté story in his “Confessions” in 1766, attributing the words to “a great princess” (probably Marie-Thérèse).
Those pints of ice cream cost $12 each! A bit rich for me….
I published the same item on my site at 12 Noon. When did you publish this item? Trying to see the true nature of the simultaneity.
vanderleun:
3:21 PM.
Was there any orange sherbet in amongst that pricey ice cream? Does the “Orange Man Bad” effect extend to comestibles?
One scoop or two?
SBA fund projected to run out of funds by Friday at the latest.
But the SBA fund does not need any more $$$ unless she can load the bill up with items to “fundamentally change” our nation.
My high school French teacher told us that it, if Marie Antoinette did say that, it was a poor translation. The “cake” in that phrase was actually referring to the crust that would stick, or “cake,” to the bottom of ovens since they baked their bread without pans. And it was often scrapped off to feed to pigs. But, that’s neither here not there; just me adding my own “education” to the conversation.
As far as this video of Pelosi, I almost want to think that it is a Saturday Night Live skit or something. Is any politician, even Pelosi, that tone deaf that she doesn’t see how this will play to your average American? Or does she just not care? Of course, her supporters will think it just shows how sophisticated, or something, she is.
Pints like that are expensive! I only buy half gallons of Turkey Hill or Friendly’s when it is on sale. Or maybe Breyer’s Vanilla if I want some “really good stuff.”
I remember how the MSM went wild over Bush Sr.’s remarking at the grocery check out counter scanning items that he was amazed – “OMG! He’s never seen a checkout scanner before!” they claimed. Or Mitt Romney’s way of blowing out birthday cake candles – he pulled them off the cake and blew them out individually instead of blowing all over the cake. “OMG, he is such a dork!” Which in light of the virus situation is actually a better way, a more hygienic way, of blowing out birthday cake candles. It really shows how smart he is.
But, I won’t hold my breathe waiting for the MSM to call her “tone deaf”? Like when Obama complained about the price of “arugula”? Does your average American even eat that? Nope, not a peep from the MSM then either.
Similar to Charles’ comment above (5:36 pm), I was once told by a reputable source that the quote, translated, was “let them eat cakes,” Cakes being the ends of what were called trenchers; i.e., small loaves of bread on which meat courses were served to soak up the grease and which were then fed to the dogs at the end of the meal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trencher_(tableware). Clearly there are multiple similar origins for this quote, but whether legendary or true, it represents the disparaging attitude of the nobility toward the then French deplorables. Remind you of anything recent?
As for Charles’ other comment: ” . . . [doesn’t Pelosi] see how this will play to your average American? Or does she just not care?”. Don’t forget she represents the Bay area and I believe a section of Marin county. Many, if not most of the couple of hundred thousand people in her district probably have fridges just like hers stuffed just like hers. It’s those people who have determined her reelection year after year. She knows she is invulnerable.
WalMart ice-cream, good stuff and priced right.
Are those “Zero” brand fridges and freezers? If so, the cost along would feed a family of 4 for a long long time. She’s a rich —.
As I see it –
it plays VERY well with normal Americans.
Nancy liking ice cream is so very very normal:
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.
Ya, multiple BIG fridges – well, she’s rich. Like Trump. (ok, maybe not quite that rich, but with a smaller diff than with Bloomberg).
Obama called it years ago – normal folk dream of being Trump. Dream of having 2 big fridges, full of ice cream. Their favorite, whether chocolate or pistachio (mine for years) or healthier sherbet. I didn’t see any Chunky Monkey.
They have Ben & Jerry’s now in Slovakia, along with Haagen-Das (?).
In the touristy old town there’s a store with this line, in English:
You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy ice cream.
Tom Grey:
I’m not sure most Americans are even seeing the clip. But if they are, I don’t think it will play very well if they are aware that she’s holding up some of their money as she sits in her mansion eating her artisan ice cream.
Pelosi is tone deaf. She is a smarmy elitist without a clue as to how deplorables perceive her. Plus, she seems to be drifting towards a Biden state of mind.
I could also point out that if you want to freeze a lot of stuff you don’t want a freezer attached to your fridge, you want a chest freezer. It’s more efficient, and shouldn’t she be for that, but also since chest freezers don’t have a defrost cycle it doesn’t do as much damage to your frozen foods.(IE ice cream wouldn’t get grainy from being repeatedly thawed and frozen.) IE on top of everything she’s a dope.
ANYONE besides me know how much those two refrigerators cost?
Hint: MORE than 10k each…
Viking, Dacor, Meile each make units like that for over 20k each
they may be Vikings given the grille on top
but i DON’T know
Artfldgr:
I read some blog comments somewhere that said the two together would be 30K. But I certainly don’t know if that’s correct.
But what is the price of arugula in her neighborhood Whole Foods?
Thats probably right neo… I know they are in that range, i just dont know the exact model and price… nothing like spending 30,000 of tax payer money to keep your icecream cold…
I had no idea of this clip. Still haven’t seen it anyplace but on blogs which are pointing out what a lousy idea it was and going on from there.
So I don’t expect it has wide general circulation; but in special-interest sites with not many viewers.
Still, I don’t see it as being less than 100% efficient at brassing off anybody who’s got some problems–particulaly money–right now. Perhaps just a skosh short of the ferocity of a hundred thousand suns. “I’m broke as hell, no chance of anything turning around and she’s shoving her privilege right in my face just for grits and shins.”
Question is, how many of the general public are going to see this.
Richard, It’s making the rounds on Facebook.
Ed – how long before Facebook censors it as violating their standards?
I guess she didn’t see this article Rufus posted on another link.
She isn’t obese now, but eating all that ice cream isn’t going to help.
Plus, the most unhealthy thing you can eat during illness (or any other time) is sugar. I’m not giving up my chocolate yet, but I’ve cut down on other treats.
PS – I do commend her choice of the Talenti Gelato; their sherbet, Roman Raspberry, is the best. And you get that nice jar when you finish eating it!

I know a lot of folks here read Instapundit, so I assume most saw this, https://www.zdnet.com/article/nyu-scientists-largest-u-s-study-of-covid-19-finds-obesity-the-single-biggest-factor-in-new-york-critical-cases/
It’s hard to tell if it is anything conclusive, or not. The article even points out some of the theory’s flaws. Not a bad sample size, but all from NYC. The speculation is it is inflammation + over 65 that may be the biggest determinants if a COVID patient ends up needing hospitalization. Obesity often = inflammation, but the hypothesis proposed is the inflammation itself is the culprit.
I hope the Trump campaign and the Republicans run this clip, nonstop, of her with her phony, pasted on smile, her tony, de rigueur scarf around her neck, her two gleaming 30K refrigerators stuffed with $12 dollar pints of ice cream, and on the other half of the screen people standing in line at food banks, or complaining about how the Democrats have adjourned, aren’t even in Washington, and how she and the Democrats are trying the same hostage-holding tactic they tried with the massive stimulus bill–they won’t vote to replenish this fund unless all sorts of other, non-essential, extraneous, lefty wish list items are included in the bill.
I’d alternate this with her and her “let them eat cake” fridge clip with a split screen the video of her February 24th walking tour of Chinatown, and her urging people to come to Chinatown and to join in the crowds, because all this scare talk about the Chinese Coronavirus is a crock. (and probably some sort of plot by Trump and the Republicans).
