Snowstorm, power outage — 9 Comments

  1. Sweet of you to transport your friend as driving in snow is no joy. Our power is holding up here in NH & its fun to watch the flakes along with a fireplace blaze but I ll be staying home. Brrr it s cold out there. Hope you only had a brief glitch Neo, & you are back up by the time you get home!

  2. Living in sub-Arctic zone, we simply cannot afford any power outage in the winter, so our electricity grid can function during all possible snowstorms. The only outage in my life happened in the summer, at extreme heat wave, when 30-tonnes transformer burned out.

  3. Hope your friend is doing well. One or two outages here per year mainly related to thunderstorms. Outages in the winter are not fun. Stay safe and warm.

  4. I bet you are glad you bought that F-350 with four wheel drive, and the big diesel, now! 🙂

  5. In our modern world, power outages are totally a political choice.

In every case, it’s a choice to save gov’t/rate payer money now, and defer maintenance and upgrades now, at a higher risk to outage and problems later.

If there is climate change, more droughts and floods and huge storms should be expected. So the risk of outages goes up.

The Climate Change alarmists refuse to advocate for better technologic resources to reduce the problems of storms — and those problems are already known in general. What is not known is exactly where, and what severity.

Every region of America should expect some 10% worse weather than they’ve ever had in history, and be ready with power, roads, water (storage / flood handling), and emergencies.

The storm is weather, part of climate. With or without man-made changes. The outage is due to political failure to insist on safe and secure power, even in a storm that is 10% worse than any in history.

This applies to storms in the North, and the Mountains, floods in the middle areas and the South, droughts in the West. And weather problems also in areas that usually don’t suffer from such problems.

Hope you remain safe! And consider getting more prepared for gov’t failure. 🙁

  6. Tom Grey:

Not where I live. Here, the power outages are almost 100% caused by weather and trees. It is a VERY wooded area, and power lines are above ground. Cars skid in a storm and hit a tree that then comes down and disrupts power lines. Or a branch comes down, for a similar reason (or wind, or heavy ice). There is nowhere near enough money – plus people would be upset – to have all the trees anywhere near power lines cut down. The infrastructure is fine otherwise. Spontaneous outages are very very rare here without large weather events or auto accidents.

  7. I am in NE too & power loss is definately weather related. We were out everytime with even a summertime tropical storm! But the power company did some serious gleaning of overhanging branches done in the past 2 summers & it has made a huge difference we seldom lose power now. I belive it is Cali where power situation is a political situation. NY NJ too as they will not allow repair crews that do not belong to their union, hideous behavior.
