I am thankful for many things, but one of them is this blog and my readers. May you all have many things to be thankful for this holiday and always.

Flew in to Chicago ahead of the storm front to have the holiday with family. Lots of grandchildren around. Not mine. Mine are in California but my sister’s are here. Best wishes for a traditional holiday absent all the crazy stuff. Reading Kurt Schlicter’s new novel, “Collapse.”
Thanksgiving is one of the many, many things remarkable about America: non-sectarian, apolitical, impersonal, and universally applicable. Though it does imply the existence of a God to whom we should give thanks. As I do.
Jean and Dave: I’m a Type I diabetic who once had a thin sliver of pecan pie at a duck camp. It drove my blood sugar up to 500. I look at y’all with some envy. Enjoy!

My #1 thing to be grateful for today: in one month, we are escaping California and will be living in another state. Fingers crossed, knock on wood, etc. that this buyer avoids the problems of the first one. First house buyer was an illegal alien, which wasn’t discovered until after the loan was approved and went to underwriting.
While I’m happy to be escaping, there’s a feeling of remorse, too, since there is so much here to enjoy. I’m just sad that those in power feel compelled to make it as miserable as possible for the middle class. As someone has said (and it’s true), California is a great place to live if you’re a billionaire. Not so great if you’re a millionaire. (Or in our case, sub-millionaires) We can not get out of here fast enough.

We escaped three years ago in January. We got back to see children and grandchildren. I spent 60 years and my wife is third generation. What a shame.

No hard evidence has ever been presented for that assertion, by anyone who would actually be in a position to know. Such a a condition exists, but whether or not Jamie Lee Curtis has it is known only to her and her physicians, none of whom have ever spoken on the issue.
Everyone I know who heard this heard it from a professor in a biology class. Just like every high school had a “frozen hotdog girl”, mine certainly did.

Females are now in the majority. At birth, males outnumber females slightly but have a greater early infant mortality, so females are born with advantage. And of course women outlive men by an average now of five years (81 vs 76). That shows up in voting!
A majority of new American MDs are females. The costs of educating them are the same as if they were male, but they are less productive with all their peri-menstrual disorders, and the “normal” ones, who marry and have children, usually work part-time. The net effect is that we get less doc for the same price.

Thanksgiving has been the site of protest before, from the “National Day of Mourning” once held by Native Americans in Massachusetts to the longtime avoidance of the holiday table by LGBT Americans.
Such an assault on the gender inequalities perpetuated by Thanksgiving seems unlikely, though, given how popular the holiday is with most Americans, including women.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a woman was swept underwater at the dam. They say 26-year-old Jacob Farley dived into the water to try and save her.
When the Noel Fire Department arrived on scene, they were able to rescue the woman with a throw rope but the man drowned.

For the Thanksgiving after 9/11, the company I worked for then put up a bulletin board where people could post things they were thankful for, favorite holiday recipes, etc. I asked my brother (who is more tech savvy than me) that he should do some kind of photoshopped spoof of the famous Norman Rockwell “Freedom from Want” painting. I thought it would be funny if Osama bin Laden were seen among the celebrants at the table; but he improved upon my idea by having Osama’s severed head on the platter, with the caption, “Happy Thanksgiving, America!” Oddly enough, some of the squares in the office found the spoof offensive and tore it down almost immediately.
