Border deal? — 22 Comments

  1. SOTU, 47 million viewers. CBS poll: 76% approval. CNN poll: 76% approval. Astonishing. Unprecedented. Devastating.

Trump’s political power has gone through the roof. I doubt that he’s going to settle for half a loaf.

  2. When both sides claim victory the real victor is just helping the loser save face.

Trump wanted $5b but is now settling for about a quarter of that, but he’s getting the wall and, as Neo notes, may have a way to get the rest.

What he really won was to gain agreement from the Democrats to proceed with a wall. Recall that this is the wall they said was immoral, unnecessary, and would not work.

    Trump wins, Democrats lose.

  3. PDT should not directly veto it. He should merely refuse to sign the legislation (a pocket veto).

Then, he should immediately declare a national emergency due to two major actual emergencies. These emergencies are : (1) the border/wall/invasion situation and (2) the government shutdown and lack of funding for the operation of our government.

The national emergency will allow transfers of funds not only to fund the entire wall but also to fund the government and avoid or drastically shorten the shutdown.

Should Congress attempt to legislatively end the emergency, this will result in the cancellation of the funding for the operation of the government.

  4. Trump’s going to cave and the left knows it.
He caved already by giving them what they want, a budget deal without any funding for border security AND getting the government bureaucracies working again.
Which is exactly what he said he wouldn’t do.

And they know he’s going to do it again, give in to their every demand, accept the funding for this tiny section of secure border while leaving a thousand miles more as Swiss cheese, AND make it impossible for ICE to actually do anything about the millions of illegal migrants entering the country each year by taking away their ability to detain and extradite those illegals.

  5. Seize all of El Chapo’s property and cash and use it to pay for the Wall.

The troubled is finding it. Think Trump will sign the deal and then look for money elsewhere for the rest of the funding. RIFing 10,000 employees would be good way to find it. Maybe just moving EPA to Detroit would help. Dept of Ed to Oklahoma. Probably second term priorities.

  6. He talks about immigration and border security in the El Paso speech.

    https://factba.se/transcript/donald-trump-speech-maga-rally-el-paso-february-11-2019

    clips 50-90:
“Can you believe their proposal would put a hard cap on the number of illegal aliens that our brave ICE officers we love our ICE officers, can detain and thus remove forcing thousands of criminals to be set free into United States communities? I don’t think so. Okay, I don’t — and I want to thank all right officers what they put up with this incredible that includes border patrol, and that includes law enforcement.

I will never sign a bill that forces the mass release of violent criminals into our country and I will never abolish or in any way mistreat our great heroes from ICE and Border Patrol and law enforcement. We will always stand with those brave men, and women will always be with them. We’re going to take care of them just like they take care of us. Remember that I have to tell you, as I was walking up to the stage. They said that progress is being made with this committee. Just say you know we’re building the wall anyway. They say that progress has been made. Yes now, just now I say wait a minute. I got to take care of my people from Texas. I got to go. I don’t even want to hear about it. I don’t want to hear so I don’t know what they mean.

I chose I chose so so we probably have some good news, but who knows us will learn we’re setting the stage folks, you know what it’s called right. It’s called we’re setting the stage we’re setting the table we’re doing whatever we have to do the walls being built. It will continue it’s going at a rapid pace, the Rio Grande, it’s happening, go check it out.

But if we had proper border security, including a very powerful wall, we wouldn’t have to work so hard and it would be a lot safer and a lot better. My administration is committed to ending illegal immigration, while modernizing our legal immigration system, which has been in terrible shape for many many decades to prioritize the admission of those who could support themselves financially and contribute to our economy.
    ..
What the hell is happening with the border? That was a very important thing. We and the fact is illegal immigration is a heartbreaking human tragedy. One in three women is sexually assaulted on the very long and dangerous journey north up to our country, sex traffickers. These are the worst human beings on Earth exploit our porous border to sell young girls and women into modern day slavery.

These are hypocrites who oppose security for you, while living their entire lives. I do too, to be honest with you, I’m guilty I’m guilty. I also live behind walls, they live behind walls and gates, and they have guards all over the place. Me too, because I want to be safe and I want to make america safe.
If you don’t mind so, security should not belong only to the rich and to the powerful safety is the birthright of every American, which is why we must finish the wall, because laws are not immoral. As it was said, human trafficking is immoral. Drug peddling is immoral. Child smuggling is a moral sanctuary.
Child smuggling powerful safety human trafficking

Let’s go to wall. This wall will be built in the areas identified by border agents as having the greatest need, while safely directing people in commerce to our many lawful ports of entry, which were beefing up in every way. Structurally, with beefing up the ports of entry and mechanically, we have equipment now that can spot drugs.
It’s incredible stuff, it’s expensive. It’s incredible. By the way, there is nothing better than a good old fashioned German shepherd it’s hard to believe. That’s true. You know I was with the people and they’re showing me this incredible computerized stuff and where it goes, I say: could I because Secret Service took me out to the places they were showing me? These German Shepherds are unbelievable, they’ll run past all these empty boxes and one of the boxes has drugs in a deep down in a box, and it comes to a screeching halt, barking at them every time.
[I want to spit on Cillizza for taking this bit about drug-detecting dogs totally out of context to make fun of Pres. Trump who was oviously responding to a shout from the crowd about Obama]

We want to yeah obama. Had a dog, both parties should come together to finally create a safe and lawful system of immigration. The American people have Waited long enough. We must secure the border, pass, Kate’s Law and and really shut down sanctuary cities. You know we need Democrat votes to do, deport criminal aliens and keep the coyotes and traffickers and drug dealers the hell out of our country.”

  7. Readers here are no strangers to the idea that President Trump’s greatest enemies are some of his own administration, but that USA Today article Neo quoted confirms it later in the post.

“Opposition to the wall within Trump’s own administration has prevented progress on this issue, which is wildly popular with the GOP’s conservative base and is the consequence of the president surrounding himself with establishment advisers who have worked to thwart his populist agenda from within. For example, after being briefed on the concept of selling USDA commercial paper to pay for border security, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue’s then-Chief of Staff Heidi Green shot down the idea by curtly stating, “The secretary does not want the wall.”

Trump’s policy options will only get narrower after Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in January and the White House becomes consumed by fighting off impeachment. There is no chance that the wall funding will pass through Congress in the next two years with divided government and increasing political divisiveness in the nation’s capital.

Minus an 11th-hour deal in the Senate, the only way a border wall will get built is if the president uses executive power to do it. He has the funds available and the authority to build the wall on his own. The only question is whether President Trump will finally start taking advice from those who actually support his goals rather than continuing to trust the internal obstructionists.

  8. I think that Trump should give the Dems what they want, no border security. Pull all ICE and Border Patrol agents from NM and CA. Open the borders there. And watch the results. Thirty days should be enough.

  9. If djt decides to use his excutive authority to build walls/barriers, he will need to ignore the inevitable court rulings to block his authority. That will create a sh*t storm of course, possibly impeachment, and even conviction given that there are more than enough gope senators that also support open borders to garner the necessary votes.

My preference is he declares a national emergency, and orders a robust military force to the border to truly defend the nation from this invasion. Rules of engagement should allow lethal force for adults who cross after ignoring orders to turn back. Yes, the left and some of the middle will weep virtual signalling tears. But, we face a mortal threat, extreme actions are required.

  10. Border Deal -> Negotiations -> Democrats -> Socialism.
Yeah, I can shoe-horn in this post. (paragraphs & emphasis added)

The problem I have is with believing that you should do something that “contributes to society” beyond, you know, what people are willing to pay you for.

The reason I object to this, is that this sort of do-goodism tends to fall into the “Christmas gifts to total strangers.” You’re giving someone things they don’t want, at great expense to yourself, and the things will just get discarded or used in ways you’ll never think of. In the worst case scenario, in which your desire to ‘give back to society’ leads you to become a politician, you end up making laws to make people use those ‘gifts’ that you insist on giving them because you’re sure they’re good for them.
Obamacare for instance, is sort of like passing a law that forces everyone to wear the Christmas sweater knit by their aunt Peggy, the one with the odd color tastes, who is near blind and has the attention span of a hamster, so that the thing is ugly, shoddy and full of dropped stitches that start unravelling the moment you put the sweater on.

This idea of doing something “to benefit” faceless others, whether they’re “society” or “the people.” When I was eight, my father told me that the greatest crimes against humanity have been committed in the name of “the people” – I’m now fifty one. I have only seen this confirmed over and over again.

The reason for this is that “the people” or “society” can’t talk. (Not really. Yes, there’s polls. There’s also lies, damn lies and statistics.) That means that “doing something for the people” becomes “doing something to the people” which involves in turn “forcing the people to do things I want.” And the “best” part is you can do it with a glow of virtue because you’re “giving back to society” for all the roads and internet and things.

The sheer and rank stupidity of these “altruistic” “gifts” to society is obvious when you think of trying to “give back” to say, your family. No, seriously.

If you can’t “give back” to your nearest and dearest with any degree of accuracy – beyond doing your part in the running of house and family – even supposing you owe society something… HOW are you going to give it back?

If only there were some way to be able to tell when society wants something. I mean, wants it enough to value it, and not to receive it with a half-embarrassed smile and a “thank you, aunt Peggy” and then pitch it in the trash – laws allowing? If only there were some arcane way of telling when someone wanted something enough!

Oh, I know – we’ll have these tokens that people can give each other in exchange for goods and services – cool, uh?

You’ll know that a good or service is needed/wanted by how many tokens people are willing to give you for it.

It’s a little risky, of course. Say that you wish to do something, and train for it, and later find that no one will give you tokens for it. There will be a few of those tragedies, but fortunately the cost will be born by individuals and is usually recoverable-from, since all skills have auxiliary skills that can be used to get the tokens, even though they might not be what the person REALLY wants to do. But they can do that in their spare time, when they’ve exchanged their tokens for food and rent, right?

At least we can dispense with the massive bureaucracy to weigh the contributions of engineers one through twenty four and decide what compensation they should receive! Yeah. Let’s install the token-exchange system.

What? What do you mean it’s already been done? Oh. I see. Og sold the secret of fire for enough salt to put on the meat he cooked? Miraculous. You mean he didn’t invent fire “to give back to society” for the pelts and things he got? And then, over time, the exchange evolved to symbolic tokens, so we can all shop for what we want and need without carrying a live goat in each pocket?
And all of this takes place on its own, without government intervention? And in fact goes on despite government intervention, in the form of black markets, in tyrannies? And it gives us an accurate representation of what large numbers of people want and need? (Don’t blame me if what they want and need is often the sham wow.)

Who would have thought of that?

  11. El Chapo’s assets would get most of the wall built. I do recall someone saying that our neighbors to the south would financially assist.

  12. There’s no wall because, according to General Kelly, Trump long ago abandoned the wall as originally conceived: concrete, great wall of china. Mexico ain’t paying for it either and, to your credit, most of you realized this was horseshit from the beginning.

If Trump wanted to build a wall he would’ve done so when he had control of both houses. I know, there’s a filibuster…but he could’ve used reconciliation. In that case, all he had to do was twist the arm of 1 or 2 some Liberal Republicans or convert a Bluedog. The House was a gimme.

Now the House is like facing Tom Brady. Fuggetaboutit.

There ain’t no wall. Mexico ain’t paying for it. Obamacare’s still the law of the land. All he did was re-name Nafta (most of you here, again to your credit, appear aware of this), and North Korea ain’t denuclearizing.

To top it off he went deficit-spending. You’ve been had.

  13. Manju:

The fat lady hasn’t sung yet, but Hillary is still not and never will be the President. Nor will the Ice Queen, nor will Fauxahauntas, and probably not Ms Sleeps Around town with Brown. How were the crickets? No wisdom on Virginia and infanticide?

  14. Manju favors us with his(her?) wish list.

The economy is roaring. The wall is going to be built.

Baltimore now has 2/3 of school students the children of immigrants who don’t speak English.

What else can Democrats accomplish ?

  15. Senator John Thune is a major disappointment. I supported his successful campaign against that profound Leftist Tom Daschle in 2004, but he apparently has since been infected with some sort of brain worm in the Swamp that makes him think he is an improvement on sliced bread. What is it with previously decent, level-headed people that, once they achieve public office, they start playing to the indecent and verminous Manjus of the country?

Should I give a sh*t at my advanced age? Yes, I should. We all should. To turn the USA over to the Manjus is flat unacceptable.

It may require armed combat. The people I run with are increasingly of that opinion and all are armed with AR-15s and more. You own guns, Manju?

A 2nd civil war, resembling the one in 1930s Spain, the “Republicans” (all Commies and useful idiots, despite Hemingway’s admiration) versus the Franco crowd, aka “fascists”. Franco won, but only with Hitler’s support, since he had nowhere else to turn, not to France or England or the defanged Roosevelt USA for sure.

Sometimes the situation calls for a tyrant, relatively benign, but authoritarian and able to squash the AOC/Tlaib/Kamala/Fauxahontas crowd like the bugs they are. Why are so many of these bat-sh*t people female, BTW ?
