Meghan Markle ♥ Harry — 25 Comments

  1. Good choice for the prince…times 2.
Kate knows her role as mother to heirs to the throne and wife of the man-who-will-be-king. All accounts…doing it well.

Meghan knows she and hers will always be also-rans, but need to not make a mess of themselves like Auntie Fergie. She seems eager to learn. Wait for a month or two after the wedding. We’ll see.

  2. Over at NRO’s Corner they have a link to in Instagram piece made by Meghan about being biracial. It’s very good. She seems very grounded. I wish them well.

  3. Blind date with a prince. How do you get a blind date with a gorgeous and moderately accomplished actress, model, and humanitarian activist?

I call shenanigans on this ‘blind date’ notion!

  4. Harry strongly resembles the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Carson Wentz. This was pointed out during last evening’s broadcast of the game. The resemblance is uncanny.

  5. How do they get dates with Princes?

    The usual way.

Send a messenger to the Queen of Hearts?

Have my agent call all the King’s men?

Probably just saw each other on TV.

  6. neo, I know you got “upgraded” along with me with the new version of Firefox.

Do you, or anyone reading this, know where the “find on this page” function is?

  7. neo,

I missed your posts this weekend about writing the blog and musical theater. I have things to write about both topics, but I’m not sure if you see new comments on older posts, so I’ll summarize here.

I really enjoy when you write about Broadway and your experiences growing up in New York. A unique time in the history of theater and you were right in the center of it!

Regarding “Saturday Afternoon Reflections,” I’ve written before how a blog with tens of thousands of readers almost literally fell into my lap and I had to begin writing. I’d often ask myself the same thing, “why am I doing this?” A lot of it was out of a sense of duty and/or competitiveness. It was a popular blog, I wanted it to stay popular and that meant “the beast had to be fed.”

In time the ego-stoking part wore off and I cared less and less how many people were reading the blog and more and more about whether I was personally getting anything out of my writing. In the end I settled on writing about what I was interested in, and only what I was interested in, but I still wondered, “why am I doing this?”

I decided it was the formality of having to structure my thoughts knowing that others would read them. It forced me to flesh opinions and ideas out more than if they were fleeting notions, or nothing I would share with others. That caused my thoughts and ideas to mature, often from something a commenter would write that I hadn’t thought of. I have since turned it over to others and rarely write posts there. I feel pretty good with the maturity of those opinions for now (I’m sure that will change with time), and I’ve found other sources, like you, that are better versed in the handful of topics I care about, so I read their writing to stimulate my thoughts.

When I read some of your posts (quite a few of them, actually) I get a strong sense you’re reasoning something out. Going through a systematic process of writing and logically assembling the facts you have in order to develop a conclusion. You’re obviously a seeker of wisdom and truth (speaking of Robert Morse). Could it be writing for an audience helps you find the wisdom you seek? Regardless, I know it helps us, your humble readers, find wisdom.

  8. I was familiar with Markle since the beginning of the TV show “Suits.” Since her character was a child of a mixed race couple, I figured that the casting was probably true to the character.

When the stories of her dating the prince got more serious I thought it unlikely that the race issue would come up. But, the issue I was unaware of was the fact that Markle is a divorcee. The obvious response to that for us American dummies is, so what?

To borrow from the Wikipedia piece on “The King’s Speech:”

… eldest son David ascends the throne as King Edward VIII. A constitutional crisis arises with the new king over a prospective marriage with the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. Edward, as head of the Church of England, cannot marry her, even if she receives her second divorce, since both her previous husbands are alive.

No separation of church and state there, but I doubt anyone cares anymore.

  9. Pretty ladies. Not a prince, but got a pretty lady myself. She has been the with me for almost 5 decades. Lucky me.

  10. I happened to see a headline in one of the tabloids today in the supermarket. It blared that Megan was pregnant, and that Harry thought they might set a good example and encourage other couples in the same predicament to marry before the baby comes.

Didn’t read the story itself. The check out line was moving too quickly, but that’s what the cover screamed. FWIW.

  11. Rufus Firefly:

You hit it on the nose. It’s through the research and then the writing process that I clarify my own thoughts—that I’m forced to clarify my own thoughts.

  12. The race issue gets bought up by liberal press only, at this age and day only people who still judge people based on skin color or sexual orientation and make a big deal out of it are the liberals.

  13. Remember how the press made a big deal about how Harry was a perfect match with Pippa Middleton and how they should get together? Meghan actually looks more like Pippa than Kate, perhaps Harry did like Pippa but got turned down by her and now finding himself a substitution.

  14. Two days from now is Pearl Harbor day.

What are we going to do to celebrate our revenge?

  15. I spent a lot of time in Yokosuka. Every time I see the Japanese naval ensign I am so happy they are now on our side.

  16. Thanks everybody for the tips. I’m obsolete. The Navy retired the F-14 in, what, 2006? My mad skillzz r.e. the AWG-9 are hardly in need. Anymore.

That applies even to commenting, especially here.
Neo’s readers set a high bar.

  18. I put this on the wrong thread. Too many tabs open.

“…Before we headed out to battle in the Pacific Theater, we sailed into Pearl Harbor, stopping to refuel and ressupply. As you can imagine, I had mixed feelings about returning there, unsure how it would hit me. Most on the ship knew I had served on the Arizona, They had seen my scars, asked about my experiences.

As we made our way slowly into the harbor, we passed the Arizona. I had not seen it since the morning of the attack. I could not believe my eyes. All the superstructure had been cut away. – for scrap no doubt. Where once a great ship was moored, there remained only its ghostly visage, hovering eeriliy beneath the water’s surface

Every emotion within me started rising, quietly pooling in my eyes.

Then something happened I wasn’t expecting, and I certainly wasn’t prepared for. A call came over the public address system, mustering all hands to the fantail. When everyone was there the captain called out, “Is Stratton here?”

I raised my hand, “Here, sir.”

He waived me over. Then without fanfare of any kind he presented me with a medal. The Purple Heart. The entire crew applauded. The Captain didn’t give a speech, and he didn’t ask me to give one. He just handed me the medal and that was it — a simple gesture of respect and reccognition.

I was relieved. I hadn’t been asked to speak — if I had opened my mouth , I doubt I would have been able to control my emotions. Even so, it was an extremely difficult moment for me. It would take me years to find my voice where the Arizona was concerned, but that display of unity and honor shown by my shipmates on the Stack as we glided past the remains of the Arizona was a moment of healing, any hospital treatment had been. Though I may have left Pearl Harbor on a stretcher, I had returned on a destroyer. I had recovered my strength, as had my country. I was ready to meet what was coming — and I was bringing a boatload of reinforcements with me…

It needs to be said at least twice.

  19. Interesting to note that Meghan Markle’s father grew up in Newport, Pennsylvania, in Perry County. Perry County has the reputation of being the “West Virginia” of Central Pennsylvania counties, they got their first traffic light only in the last twenty years.

Perry County is indeed humble hills and valleys northwest of Harrisburg, very socially conservative and not at all prosperous. So Meghan’s father left for California and married an African-American lady and fathered the Prince’s fiancee.

That in itself is a neat story.
