Thomas Sowell and Ebony
After writing a post yesterday on Thomas Sowell, I happened to see this today:
As for Sowell, he’s…an economist and writer whom playwright David Mamet once called “our greatest contemporary philosopher.” Sowell, who never knew his father, was raised by a great-aunt and her two grown daughters. They lived in Harlem, where he was the first in his family to make it past the sixth grade. He left home at 17, served as a Marine in the Korean War, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard, earned a master’s degree at Columbia University the next year, followed by a Ph.D. in economics at the University of Chicago.
Sowell, at 87, authored some four dozen books (not counting revised editions) and wrote hundreds of scholarly articles and essays in periodicals and thousands of newspaper columns. In 2015, Forbes magazine said: “It’s a scandal that economist Thomas Sowell has not been awarded the Nobel Prize. No one alive has turned out so many insightful, richly researched books.” Yet, thanks in part to the Ebony shutout, many blacks have never heard of him.
The “Ebony shutout” referred to in that last sentence is the fact that Ebony, the magazine for black people that has been published for over seventy years, has had a yearly list of “its ‘Power 100,’ defined as those ‘who lead, inspire and demonstrate through their individual talents, the very best in Black America,'” and has apparently never included Sowell. And that fact demonstrates—although it doesn’t need much demonstrating—the liberal bias of the media that caters to the black population in America, and helps to shape (“lead and inspire”) that group’s values and opinions. I wonder how many black people have heard of Sowell, who is not just a major thinker but who was a widely syndicated columnist for many many years.
That said, I am fairly sure that, as a reader of the NY Times, New Yorker, and Boston Globe for most of my life prior to 9/11, I hadn’t heard of him before my political change began, either.
I read his book, “Basic Economics, Fourth Edition: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy,” just out of curiosity, not expecting it would completely upend the way I thought about how the economy works.
Previously I had no idea about what socialism, communism, capitalism, free markets, Marxism, liberalism, conservatism, etc actually meant economically and politically.
I took for granted liberal ideas of the goodness of socialism and the evilness of capitalism because I’m kind hearted and that’s all I was ever exposed to. I’m still kindhearted, so now am appalled by leftist economic views.
Shockingly enough Ebony are not big fans of Clarence Thomas on their list either.
It’s unfortunate that the Left operates that way, successful Blacks are ignored except those who succeed in athletics and music. They are just too obvious to ignore.
This is the same tactic the Left is now using on college campuses nationwide. Refuse to let other ideas be heard.
If, by some sort of miracle, a conservative viewpoint is expressed at a movie screening or lecture, shout at the screen or at the invitee.
And if that doesn’t work use violence to ensure the other viewpoint cannot be heard.
Leftist ideas die in the sunlight. They can only flourish in the dark. So an embargo or boycott on freedom is required to keep the paroles in place.
There is no violence like horizontal violence.
The eminent Mr Sowell left the D plantation so…
Just like all those women who dare be conservative in their persuasions…
Sad…nothing new…but still sad at how the left robs “the whole” for the sake of the narrative. Progressives always destroy what they cannot understand or control.
Has anyone stopped to consider that the people who write for Ebony have never heard of Sowell?
By the same token, do you reckon anyone on the editorial staff at Teen Vogue knows who Milton Friedman is?
Walter Williams is another fun black conservative. Next time you find yourself entangled in a debate with a white liberal ethnomasochist, be sure to hand them this certificate from Williams, absolving them of their White Guilt.

Printed my copy.
As an American of Native (Cherokee) ancestry, I authorize any of Neo’s readers who so desire to wear whatever ersatz Indian regalia suits their fancy.
You’ll have to make your own certificate.
Not a fan of this racial “profiling” thing; but as long as we’re doing it, I, for the most part, highly appreciate Kevin Williamson’s ideas and style (at the “National Review”).
Borders book stores always placed Thomas Sowell’s books in the political section. I would move as many as I could to the black studies section in the hope that they might be purchased by the unknowing and be exposed to his writings
Aesop,
Thank you much, sir. 🙂
Alsop fan, whoo hoo ! There was a movement afoot to change my 150 year ( in NE, so we have old schools) High School s mascot which was a very noble rendition of a Mohegan Brave. It was never made fun of or disrespect, ever. In fact it was probably the only exposure that us children of immigrants ever saw of a Native American & it was most positive. Happly that student newly arrived from the ME, was shouted dowmn in his effort. OF COURSE he is done there and moved on & 150 Yr old tradition is safe.
Sorry about the miss spell doing it via phone
Thomas Sowell is a national treasure!
I wish I were surprised that he’s never made the Ebony 100, but I’m not. AT minimum, everyone in the media should read his Basic Economics book.
Naturally EBONY ignores him. He refuses to be a VICTIM OF WHITEY.
