Gap-toothed models
There’s a vogue for gap-toothed models.
But that photo at the end of the article is incorrect. Madonna was not the original. Lauren Hutton was:
What’s up with this gap-toothed business? Part of it may be British; they are notorious (used to be, anyway) for having bad teeth. Part of it is the pursuit of novelty. Part of it—for Georgia Jagger—is her father’s fame and cashing in on it and her resemblance to him (and to her mom, model Jerry Hall). Even though Mick Jagger doesn’t have a tooth gap, if Georgia made her teeth look more conventional, I don’t think she’d conjure up a younger, feminine, blonder Jagger quite as well:
Freckles is another model trend. My theory about the whole thing—both the gap and the freckles—is that it’s all about looking Lolita-esque.
Models are a funny breed. Who cares what they do, anyway? And yet the top models make a ton of money, and they are ubiquitous. We see them everywhere. What’s more, their looks both reflect trends that are going on now, and determine trends of the near future.
I don’t just mean fashion trends, either, I mean trends that affect our financial lives, our love lives, the way we feel about ourselves, the way we couple up, the way we eat, and more—particularly for the young. Apparently the young don’t want to grow up. I also think it’s remarkable that this tooth gap is in the ascendance at the same time that intolerances of physical imperfections—even in regular people—has reached a fever pitch among the young, and cosmetic surgery has become ever more common to fix the smallest flaws, or things that are perceived as flaws and are really not.
Not only forgot Hutton, but French model/singer/actress Vanessa Paradis:

Oh geeze can”t find my knees… I am gap toothed and I’m not as pretty as Hutton, plus I have dandely parts. 🙂
Les Blank did an indie film, “Gap-Toothed Women” back in the eighties.

It’s a look.
It might be a British thing, because I find it charming. Here is the young Marsha Hunt.

Well it makes flossing easier. But there was a British study that said flossing was of little value. Who knew?
Leave it to the Brits to discover that flossing does not good.
As for gap-toothedness, Tom Sawyer said it made it easier to spit. That certainly is more good than flossing.
I’ve known a fair number of models, both female and male, and although I don’t particularly detect that here, it’s surprising how much hostility they sometimes arouse. And many people jump on the idea that they’re brainless. Often enough, though, in the case of females, they are too tall to be popular in high school and are late-bloomers, though some of course accept their destiny as a “professional beauty” at an early age. It’s interesting that the 2nd most high earning male supermodel right now, David Gandy, is very far from a conventional “pretty boy.” Instead he looks rather like a villain in a French gangster movie of the 50s, a badass.
Gap-tooth, freckles, and seemingly a trend towards multi-ethnic or just weird-looking creatures so that the designers can out-hip each other and parade themselves as “original” for a season or two — yet in the end, 55% of all female runway models come from Russia or Ukraine. And yes, these tend to be conventionally beautiful, often blonde. Their career is seldom longer than 3-5 years.
Amazing Asian (primarily Chinese) supermodels like Fei Fei Sun are featured on the covers of Australian or Italian or South African Vogue, but American Vogue, last I knew, remained free of any Asian face.
That’s just a few disconnected, hurried thoughts on the world of modeling and its subset, beauty — about which there is a great deal to say.
Hutton is pretty, that creature at the bottom is NOT!
An interesting discussion.
I can take or leave a gap-toothed lady.
But a snaggle-tooth is a different kettle of fish. Now we’re talking!
Give me a famously snaggle-toothed lady like the country singer, Jewel, every time.
Stephen Ippolito:
About Jewel’s teeth.
The gap-tooth look is now definitely in — Emmanuel Macron, who just came in first in the French presidential election, has one too.
I am gap toothed and it makes easier to whistle loudly.
Not lolita. Human. Natural. Gap-toothed and all. Good character.
Strive within that framework.
miklos000rosza: I watch more than my share of movies. In fact just last night I was watching “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes” directed by Billy Wilder and I noticed it had been scored by Miklos Rosza. Who scored a buncha classic films going back to the 30s and 40s.
If you’ve got a story to tell I’d enjoy hearing it.
miklos000rosza: PS I enjoy your comments.
if Georgia made her teeth look more conventional, I don’t think she’d conjure up a younger, feminine, blonder Jagger quite as well…
neo: Agreed.
The thing is Mick is not conventionally handsome. He’s more of a skinny, cartoon guy with Kali lips and tongue who will wear god-knows-what and shimmy like Tina Turner.
He was never Sean Connery. But it works. It definitely works.
Gap-toothed models? Oh, please, that is so 2010. Right now, it’s having big, thick eyebrows that can make a female model more popular. Consider the example of Cara Delevingne, now 24, an English model, whose career took off in 2011-2012. She is noted for her distinctive eyebrows.
Cara Delevingne has also received attention for her quirky personality, likes to make goofy faces for candid photos on social media, and is yet another female star who says she is bisexual.
And Cara is also an actress, having appeared in “Paper Towns” (2015) and then “Suicide Squad” (2016). Her latest film, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” (a space opera based on the French comic) is due to open this summer.
Shrug.

Lauren Hutton was definitely NOT the first…
babes forget there was history before you were born
Esther Rolle – She ws born in 1920 and had gapped teeth way before hutton who was born in 1943…
but Ethel Waters can be seen with gaps, and not… as she wore dental dam fronts in the early days, and let her gap hang out in the end days… she as born 1896
the actor MOST famous for a gapped tooth in the past 100 years would HAVE to be Terry Thomas… he made more of a gap money maker than Omar Shariff
My deseased friend: Odetta Holmes, 1930 Birmingham, Alabama – yes THAT odetta, who created the natural fro, and was a force for civil rights…
“If your neighbor looks at you like they don’t enjoy the key you’re singing in, look right back, bless them, and keep on singing.”
―Odetta Holmes
And before Madonna was Mona..
Mona lisa has a gapped tooth and porcelains were the way to fill in them…
Isabella of Aragon, suffered from such severe enamel-staining that she used pumice stone and cuttlefish, has been established by skeletal analysts.
‘Unfortunately, Isabella’s use of all this dental hygiene removed not only staining from her teeth but some of her enamel as well,’ said Chrissie Freeth
Isabella also had grooves between blackened areas of damaged teeth which suggest the use of crude toothpicks and the brick dust, china fragments and ground cattle hooves which went into early 16th century toothpaste.
[hey greenies, want a try that old time remedy? how about bull piss?]
and of course there are ‘Waterloo teeth’

Just so you know, william Bonney also had gapped teeth, and i am actually finding these people by going through images in my memory and checking
in the silent movie era they casted thsi for its appearance of idiocy in characters like step and fetchit (which makes an interesting appearnce in the first movie of the wizard of oz as he is caught stealing watermellon in the field and eating it on the spot!)
Jessica Hart “I’m sorry I called you a gap-toothed bitch. It’s not your fault you’re so gap-toothed.” … Watch Her Candid Wendy Williams Interview! Gap between
and before the joker in modern movies you can see the joker Conrad Veidt as the “Man who laughs” – of which all jokers seem to now be derivative or reinvented for..
and a person in the dark fame who worked with Garbo had a small gap: John Gilbert
let me know if yo uwant to actually know more history
What about Alfred E. Neuman?
Artfldgr:
Once again you’ve succumbed to taking something literally.
Of course Hutton was not literally “the first”—not the first famous person to have a space between her front teeth. That would be an absurd thing for me to be stating. No, it’s not what I meant.
I realize that you have a tendency to take things literally. But you also have a very unfortunate tendency to insult people while you’re taking them literally. “babes forget there was history before you were born.” No, “babes” don’t. Or perhaps some babes do, and some dudes do, but believe me, I’m aware that gap-toothed people, and even gap-toothed celebrities, existed before I was born.
I was speaking of models, by the way. That was the category this particular post of mine was about (although Madonna was in the article, for some reason, she was not only NOT “the first,” she wasn’t even a model, so she certainly was not the first model with a gap tooth). And no, I really didn’t even mean to say that I know for a fact that there was never a gap-toothed model before Lauren Hutton. I was merely trying to indicate that Hutton came before Madonna as “the original” famous 20th Century model with a gap-tooth. I don’t think there were others, although of course there might have been some I’m not aware of.
Go back and read the post. The title is “Gap-toothed models.” It starts this way:
Translated: the photo of Madonna is incorrect. Not only was she not a model at all—and the entire article, and my post, are both about models, and she is identified as the original gap-toothed star, so she’s incorrect in that way. But she was preceded by an earlier gap-toothed model, Lauren Hutton. Hutton is to the best of my knowledge the first famous gap-toothed model, although as I said earlier that might be incorrect. But the people you mention—gap-toothed celebrities and particularly actors—are not models, and they’re not the category I was referring to.
Testing.
My browser or neoneocon.com seems to think I am Vanderleun in the new France topic and my comments are rejected.
Seriously. My browser autofills the Name/Mail/Website fields with Vanderleun’s info, including his email, which I should not be able to see, though it’s an open secret on his blog.
I change them to my own, but my comments don’t get through.
Are we all Vanderleun now, Spartacus-style?
“I am Vanderleun.”
He would like to think so.
Seriously. My browser autofills the Name/Mail/Website fields with Vanderleun’s info, including his email, which I should not be able to see, though it’s an open secret on his blog.
Hmm. Rebooted my machine. I’m still Vanderleun in the France topic.
huxley:
A comments glitch just started. I’m working on trying to fix it. In the meantime, check the autofill and make sure it’s your information each time. If you don’t want your email address to possibly get out to some other commenter, just fill in a fake email address for now.
Sorry! I have no idea what’s going on, but it’s frustrating. I think it’s a wordpress problem.
