Yes, you can hurt yourself doing yoga — 12 Comments
I have a neck problem, the result of a childhood accident, that can result in nerve issues. Over the course of 1 year, putting my granddaughter in her car seat aggravated my condition on 2 different occasions and it was time and effort to get back to ground zero, especially that 2nd time. Since then I have sworn off yoga. Instead I worked with a very gifted trainer and she put together daily exercises I can do that are safe for me. So for the rest of my life–that is it.

Shock Tactics Russia claims it can wipe out entire US Navy with a single ‘electronic bomb’ in bizarre propaganda report
i mentioned it when they knocked out a cruise ship in the pacific (china) and the russians knocked out the USS donald Cook in the black sea..

As the US warship approached the Crimean peninsula skirting Russian waters, an unarmed Sukhoi SU-24 fighter jet, carrying only electronic gear, made several ‘close passes’ to the Cook and ultimately simulated numerous offensive maneuvers; thereby, according to the US State Department, ‘gravely demoralizing’ the Cook’s crew.
[snip for space]
As it turns out what may have been ‘demoralizing’to the crew was that as the Russian jet approached the Cook, which was narrowly close to Sevastopol, the ship’s much-vaunted AEGIS system was entirely shut down rendering the Cook’s entire communication system useless, its radar based weapons jammed and its anti-air missile function disrupted. With the crew unable to restart AEGIS, we might better understand why there might have been some consternation on-board the Cook.
Few western media covered the story, most dutifully denying any such neutering of AEGIS had occurred and that if the SU-24 was carrying any electronic warfare (EW) equipment known as Khibiny, it would have been visible on the jet’s wing tip where it would normally be found on similar Russian jets. A Khibiny is a mounted EW capsule, considered the most advanced in the world and since there was no observable Khibiny located on the wing dip, such a report of a muted AEGIS must be erroneous. What was not mentioned however was that the video of the jet ‘buzzing’ the Cook clearly indicates a pod mounted on the center line of the Russian SU-24 as well as a basket under the fuselage – either could be a Khibiny pod.
i would be remiss if i didnt try to warn you that watching the wrong things will result in people getting hurt… like those poor people in san fran shot by a white hating black male who converted to islam like the cop killers did in the 60s… but note, there are a whole lot of sabateurs… many of them our own people who think that somehow traitors get trusted by the people who move in…they dont… once one turns against their own people, no one can trst them, they have no home any more…
You sure can hurt yourself with yoga.
I will say it was about the least risky thing I’ve done in the way of exercise.
Though by the time I came to doing serious yoga classes I had already hurt myself enough times doing other things that I knew enough to be careful.
Or maybe I was just lucky.
I think that large yoga classes can be detrimental to the beginning yoga practicer. It isn’t possible or practical to correct each person’s inaccuracies in position. As with any sport or physical activity (ballet???), one can easily get hurt by mistaken movements. But I do love yoga.
Turns out, despite being very flexible, and the cheerleading of enthusiastic, yoga teachers, you are not supposed to “work through” blacking out.
Finally went to the doctor about it and was diagnosed with neurocardiogenic syncope– failed the tilt table test.
It is a really stupid cardiac nerve defect which causes the blood to rush out of the brain and down to the legs at inopportune moments.
It’s good to know, so it’s easier to manage. Drinking Gatorade helps and beware of yoga classes!
My wife took more than a year to recover from a yoga injury. Never again…
I must have learned a much more benign form of yoga long ago. I have seen video of people doing what I thought was very aggressive yoga with lots of fast motions and jerking, which is how you hurt yourself since momentum can surpass your muscle/skeletal limits. What I learned was very slow movement into a form that made something tight, then slow breathing to stretch it further. Safety was, pain cause an exhale which relieved the strain immediately.
One thing about handstands, shoulder stands and such is that they bring into play lots of tiny elements needed to maintain balance. If you haven’t used those for a long time, the quick jerks that come from correcting balance can cause very nice pulled muscles and ligaments.
I take Pilates (both mat and Reformer/other Pil machines), work out with free weights, and do cardio (not that I look like it, but…). I do an occasional yoga session with my Pilates instructor and have found yoga to be the toughest thing I do.
My balance is dreadful (esp due to B12 issues) and my upper leg muscles are weak (due to knee injuries), so I need a LOT of adjustments to do nearly anything. No injuries though – I know my limits.
Yoga is HARD!
Yoga was designed for martial arts masters and those who fasted and underwent extreme physical conditioning as spiritual seekers.
It wasn’t designed for Westerners that sit in a car or chair all the time a day.
It’s sort of like people who are obese or out of shape, suddenly fighting in mma or doing olympic 24 hour training menus. It will kill them usually in time.

The Latter Day Saints are probably more familiar with fasting, on New Moon, so they would understand the part about Jesus of Nazareth going off on a spiritual fasting journey once he found out certain things.
The Eastern Ascetic tradition had holy men or women, sit on top of a pillar, and just endure night and day, while fed only by what people gave them. This was the epitome of the holy ascetic tradition, which Jews and far Easterners are very familiar with.
It’s not something Westerners are familiar with. If they were, they wouldn’t be adopting yoga as a religion, heh.
