At the scene of yesterday’s terrorist attack in London [with UPDATE]
[See UPDATE below.]
I had never seen this statue before. But I noticed it in a photo taken at the site of the terrorist attack yesterday:
Churchill’s expression is apropos, I think. I doubt he’d be the least bit pleased with the way the Western world has been behaving lately. Here’s a better photo of the statue:
The perpetrator of the attack has yet to be identified by name, but the latest report is that he was British (does that mean British-born?) and a known wolf who had fallen off the surveillance radar.
UPDATE 1:45 PM:
The perpetrator has now been identified as Khalid Masood, a 52-year old British-born Muslim and career criminal:
Masood, who was born in Kent and had been living in the West Midlands region of central England, had previous convictions for violence but not for terrorism offenses, police said. His most recent conviction was in 2003 for possession of a knife.
But he was not the subject of any recent investigations and there was no intelligence about his intent to mount an attack, the Metropolitan Police said. May said he was not part of the “current intelligence picture.”
One of the victim’s of Masood’s attack was an American from Utah named Kurt Cochran:
US citizen Kurt Cochran was in London celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife Melissa, who suffered a broken leg, broken rib and cut to her head, her brother Clint Payne posted to social media.
Wrong place, wrong time. RIP.
More:
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson led the UN Security Council in a moment of silence Thursday for the victims of terror in London and elsewhere.
“There are victims in London from 11 nations, which goes to show that an attack on London is an attack on the world,” he said. “And I can tell you from my talks here in the United States, with the US government and with partners from around the world, that the world is united to defeat the people who launched this attack, and to defeat their bankrupt and odious ideology.”
That “bankrupt and odious ideology” that many people (including our former president) say Must Not Be Named. What is it? “Terrorism”? Is that an ideology? Or is it radical Islamic terrorism?
However, Theresa May managed to name it:
Since 2013, police, security and intelligence agencies have successfully disrupted 13 separate terrorist plots in Britain, [May] said. “We know the threat from Islamist terrorism is very real. But while the public should remain utterly vigilant they should not — and will not — be cowed by this threat.”
Shrug. They asked for it. They got it. They claim it’s no so bad, and is worth the price.
If you haven’t seen Churchill’s comment about Islam, it is worth looking up. Very appropriate for the time and location.
“If you haven’t seen Churchill’s comment about Islam, it is worth looking up. Very appropriate for the time and location.”
And you can go to jail if you mention it in the UK.
Khalid Masood
But…. but….. let’s not jump to conclusions….. AND…. It’s muslims!
OT Comment:
Am about three fourths of the way through reading the Last Lion you have in your graphic. It’s very good.
We need more Churchill’s……!!!!!
Francesca:
See update.
I’m just waiting to learn what his ‘motivation’ was, probably in vain, as mentally disturbed lone wolf’s motivations are inexplicable, right?
The Left, dedicated to the West’s suicide. Liberals, happily imbibing the Left’s poisonous kool-aid. How less mentally disturbed are they, than the lone wolves? Who is the more monstrous, the killer or they that willfully enable him?
“That “bankrupt and odious ideology” that many people (including our former president) say Must Not Be Named. What is it? “Terrorism”? Is that an ideology? Or is it radical Islamic terrorism?”
Nope, it’s globalism. The refusal to admit force immigrants to adopt your cultural, your values, and social norms and mores, instead telling them in no uncertain terms that theirs are superior (whatever they might be) and then being in denial when inevitably something like this happens and one of those migrants (or their offspring ever more frequently, who effectively grow up without ever knowing the culture of their host country, let alone respecting it) goes on a rampage.
Just checked France 24, and there I was informed of a “Frenchman arrested in Belgium’s Antwerp after trying to drive into crowd” and that “UK police identify Westminster attack suspect as 52-year-old Briton”.
Not, “French citizen”, nor “U.K citizen”, but a “Frenchman, and a “Briton”.
What in the world might possess a Frenchman to try an slaughter Belgian pedestrians?
Must be an extremist of some kind.
In a phrase which has become something of a tradition among Neo’s commenters to recite : “Move along now … nothing to see here.”
The Brits will suffer attacks like this for decades.
Apropos of nothing, I love the “No tail rotor” or NOTAR helicopter shown in the photo. Very cool aerodynamics.
More relevant is the fact than in the UK, the butcher knife used by Masood is a regulated weapon. Too bad it didn’t stop Mr. Masood’s attack.
“Lone wolf”?
So, all terrorist attacks in the West are now conducted by a “lone wolf” unless it happens to be an angry white male – then all white men, and especially Southern US culture, are to blame.
Sadiq Khan is London’s mayor. Pretty soon he’ll have Churchill’s statue removed because of Winston’s anti-Muslim statements.
Churchill, Reagan, and Thatcher were the giants of the 20th century. We need giants in these early years of the 21st. We peons should do what we can, but giants are needed to strut the stage of Western Civilization.
Just finished reading Days of Rage, by Bryan Burrough. It’s a history of the early-70s terrorism, and is highly recommended. I was not exactly aware at the time just how many acts of domestic terrorism there were in those days – thousands a year, from such luminaries as Weatherman and The Symbionese Liberation Army. And the result was largely a big yawn. Nothing compared to the official and also the public panickings following more recent terrorism acts. Maybe it was because The Greatest Generation was still in charge. 🙂
