A retro inauguration fashion addendum
Before I regretfully leave the inaugural fashions behind, let me note that a great many people wrote that Melania’s day outfit channeled Jackie Kennedy.
I have a small quibble, very small. But it’s that it wasn’t just Jackie at the inauguration; Melania channeled the fashions of the era. Granted, Jackie Kennedy was a tremendous trend-setter during that era, and I am practically certain that Melania was purposely harking back to her. But Jackie was not the only one setting those same trends.
By the way, maybe this is the moment to note that Jackie Kennedy was 31 years old when her husband took the oath of office. She was so dignified and composed that people tend to forget how young she was.
So, here’s Jackie (in split screen with Melanie), also in light blue but a different and slightly lighter blue. Also with gloves (my mother used to have a drawerful of them), but her coat has a different look, and fur trim (couldn’t do that now). Plus a hat:
Jackie wore a more fitted suit with a more similar collar to Melania’s on a visit to Canada:
To my way of thinking, the person Melania is also channeling—perhaps even more than Jackie—is Audrey Hepburn in “Charade,” a 1963 movie:
Even the shape of the hat and the hairdo that Hepburn wears is echoed in Melania’s similarly upswept do, and Melania’s bone structure is more like Hepburn’s than it is like Jackie’s.
There’s also a hint of this in Melania:
One more thing—Melania Trump has extraordinary carriage. The woman never slumps, even while seated.
Maybe Melania should try rockin’ some hats!
CW, why would you try to improve on near perfection? The downside is greater that the upside.
Maybe Lauren was channeling someone. I doubt that Melania feels the need.
Perhaps I am in the minority, but I have always felt that Laura Bush most perfectly embodied what we desire in FLOTUS (if I may use a rather disgusting modern idiom). I thought that Jackie was a a bit vacuous, and dominated by her husband and his entourage. Like I have said before, each person speaks for himself.
It will be interesting to see how Melania is treated. Will the immigration advocates love her accent? Apparently the WP has already started the cattiness. Well, never mind WP, we deplorables will stand by her.
I’m on your wavelength on this. Wow! Sophia Loren. No, wait. Audrey Hepburn.
Anyway, bless her and Ralph Lauren, the FLOTUS was well turned out. Stunning and elegant. Mercy.
“The woman never slumps, even while seated.”
Maybe she went to Navy OCS. The Chief in charge of our company told us OCs to keep our backs straight like we had a ram rod stuffed up our you know what.
Love this post! Such great observations. I completely agree with the Audrey influence.
Melania is likely the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, except for my daughter at her nuptial mass on Oct.1.
Jackie looks like a schoolgirl beside Melania.
There was some archaeology digs coming up with elongated skulls. Which ties in with that Egyptian headdress as being a sign of royal blood, meaning elongated skulls with extra brain capacity that is not merely deformation of the skull from childhood.
Oldflyer, the cattiness has already started. Chelsea Handler when asked whether she would have President Trump on her show had a caustic reply of “No” along with her reason why. Then she was asked if she would invite Melania, she replied that she wouldn’t because “she can barely speak English”. Handler was being interviewed as one of the organizers of the women’s march. How incredibly hypocritical! Is that how you support and empower other women by ripping them about how they talk? Typical liberal double-standard, if Trump had made a snarky remark like that about an immigrant he would be accused of bullying. And, it’s been reported that Melania is fluent in five languages, I wonder how many Handler can speak?
