Between 6 and 15 people reported to have been shot and killed in Munich shopping center

Details still emerging, but here’s what we know so far. The reports seem to indicate there were probably three gunman. Unfortunately (very unfortunately), they are at large:

Tonight, Munich police tweeted: “We currently do not know where to find the perpetrators. Watch yourself and avoid to be the public.”

Obviously a bad translation, but you get the idea.

I haven’t seen a word that reflects on whether this is Islamic terrorism or not, but it’s an excellent excellent bet.

In addition, there’s this:

The shopping centre is next to the Munich Olympic Stadium, where the Palestinian militant group Black September took 11 Israeli athletes hostage and eventually killed them during the 1972 Olympic Games.

They weren’t taken hostage in the stadium, it was in their living quarters, but I’m not even sure that building remains intact; it might have been temporary. Nor do I know whether this proximity is meant to be symbolic, or whether it’s a coincidence.

In a personal note, yesterday I went into a medical office and noticed a sign on the door that said no firearms were allowed. It startled me, as these signs (once so innocuous-seeming) have done now for many years. The sign might just as well read: killers, let it be known that there are a bunch of vulnerable defenseless people in here. Sitting ducks.

UPDATE 5:25 PM

The police are calling it “terrorism,” but it’s unclear what variety of terrorist might be involved. Reports differ widely, some indicating right-wing anti-immigrant terrorism and some indicating Islamic terrorism.

I don’t know whether this is correct or not—so many different stories are coming out—but the latest report indicates Islamic terrorism and the targeting of children:

A gunman shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ opened fire at children in McDonald’s before rampaging through a shopping mall, killing at least eight people.

Munich is in lockdown tonight, as a major police operation is ongoing around the city’s Olympic Park, with the force warning people to stay in their homes and avoid public spaces.

A ninth body has been found tonight and investigators are looking into the possibility of it being the attacker.

Terrified shoppers were seen running for their lives from the Munich Olympia Shopping Centre, in the district of Moosach, after hearing gunshots.

Witnesses said that the gunman screamed ‘I’m German’ and ‘Allahu Akbar’ before shooting at children.

  8. The latest I’ve heard are that six people have died. They really don’t know anything more concrete yet.Apparently the shopping center has lots of trees and shrubs around it, so it was possible for the shooter (s?) to hide and make his way into the city center. Public transportation has been shut down, and people who can’t get home are trying to find places to stay. Anything more than this is speculation.

    We don’t yet know what is happening there.

    Obviously our heart goes out to those caught up with it.

    It’s a good reminder of something I’ve said over the last few weeks.

    Our way of life, our freedoms, our ability to go about our daily lives, to raise our kids, to see them grow up and leave – I’m sorry, I’m getting too personal.

    That all depends on law enforcement.

    Obviously we have gone through a really tough time in the last few weeks, on a whole lot of fronts.

    A record 2.14 million people moved to Germany last year, a 46 per cent increase from 2014 after an influx of refugees, the Federal Statistics Office said.

    The figure represents the populations of Houston in the US, Brisbane in Australia or Paris, France.

    It said around 45 per cent of the 2.14 million immigrants who arrived in Germany last year were citizens of other European Union countries, 13 per cent were from non-EU European countries, and 30 per cent were from Asia, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Five per cent were from Africa.

    The Interior Ministry said earlier this year that 1.1million migrants entered Germany last year with the aim of seeking asylum but the number of migrants who applied for asylum last year was much lower at 476,649. Those who wish to seek asylum have faced delays in making their applications.

    It was not immediately clear whether the numbers from the statistics office were based on that data.

    A record 998,000 people left Germany last year, a nine per cent increase compared with 2014.

    That led to net migration of 1.14 million, also an all-time high figure, the Statistics Office said.

    In June The Dalai Lama said Europe risks losing its identity by taking in too many migrants and warned: ‘Germany cannot become an Arab country.’ Tibet’s spiritual leader said refugees should only stay temporarily and return home to rebuild their countries when the conflicts have ended.

    He said ‘from a moral point of view too, I think the refugees should only be admitted temporarily’. ‘The goal should be that they return and help rebuild their countries.’

    Personally, my analysis is done using other methods than statistical luck rolling the dice, based on majority of incidents. I use a parallel track system. Create a simulation where the attack is Islam. Then create another where it is some kind of operation, gone bad, by nationalists or anti Islam or separatists. Then run the courses parallel to each other and check. Very easy.

    It avoids things like biases or roll of the dice luck.

    As for nothing instills terror than that type of attack… that’ll depend on what kind of population you are targeting. Warrior cultures tend to train their six year olds on how to fight and defend the home and self, using modern weapons and techniques.

    But I agree, statistical analysis isn’t applicable in determining whose responsible.

    Instead, thoughtful consideration (whether through a deliberative process or intuitive) results in comparing the various factors that identify which scenario is most likely to be definitive.

    Suicidally, Europeans abandoned their Warrior Cultures and ours is increasingly emasculated. Whereas Russia and China will successfully resist Islam.

  25. Re your comment about businesses posting “Gun Free Zones”: Here in TN a new law went into effect July 1 that holds such businesses responsible. Yet one more reason we moved out of New England!

    Regarding Erdogan and ISIS, your comment points to the problematic nature of the ISIS part of Trump’s nomination speech.

    Trump isolates the issue on ISIS despite compelling evidence and analysis that ISIS has been in significant part, if not wholly, a purposeful instrument for the state/regime interests that Trump sides with.

  31. Degrees of separation: A family in our church had a German exchange student several years ago. One of the Munich dead was this kid’s cousin.
    That’s three degrees of separation.
    Expand that to four degrees and one of the dead is a friend of the cousin.
    Four degrees includes a lot of people, one way or another.
