Free speech on campus…
…is still very much threatened.
And this is not a new problem; it’s been going on for over two decades. If you’re interested, you might want to look at some of the works of Harvey Silverglate, and of this organization.

I saw some beginnings of this trend when went I back to school in the ’90s for teaching as a second career. A fellow student, the son of a teacher, had been in the Army. His time in the Army had given him a perspective that didn’t always agree with the PC line of the day then current in the education field. The sputtering reaction from many of his fellow students was often along the line of “How could you say such an outrageous thing?” He just smiled.
He is now completing two decades of teaching, most of it at difficult schools.
Socialism’s very survival requires that eventually ALL Thought, Speech and Behavior must be declared and enforced… as either mandatory or forbidden. Individual liberty is anathema to ‘the collective’.
Trump’s big attraction is his over the top rhetoric which mimics the over the top rhetoric of the left. Discussing penis size at a presidential debate tells me there are deeper depths to sink to in our cultural adventure to the Marianas Trench.
If pro-military campus activists can beat the leftist guard at Columbia University, others can, too.

His book “Three Felonies a Day” is a classic. Mr. Silverglate points out that today there are thousands of federal felonies so everybody is a felon. Naturally the politicians and bureaucrats like that because if you give them any trouble they can easily find a reason to imprison you.
“It will be of little avail to the people … if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.”
James Madison
My own institution gets a red light from FIRE. Aside from official policies, I often keep my opinions to myself because of exactly the comment above – “How dare you say such an outrageous thing?”. Well, that’s the cost of living in the belly of the beast.
