Obama and 2016: a dream is a wish your heart makes
And Brian Beutler has a dream, which he unveils at TNR:
The challenge, then, is to make sure Clinton’s age and ethnicity don’t discourage Obama’s youthful, diverse supporters from turning out in November 2016. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to make sure that doesn’t happen. Clinton simply has to select Barack Obama as her running mate…
As a purely textual matter, the Constitution merely prohibits Obama from being elected to a third term. It doesn’t necessarily prohibit him from actually being president again, should Hillary Clinton no longer be able to serve. And were he on the ticket, Clinton’s potential liabilities with Obama loyalists would disappear.
Beutler may be joking. Or maybe not. But he’s creative; I’ll say that for him.
Conservatives have long been wondering how Obama could contrive a third—and fourth, and fifth—term as president. The leading theory has always been the idea of his engineering or exploiting some sort of crisis and declaring a national emergency that requires the suspension of the rule. Or, alternatively, having Michelle run. Beutler is helpfully offering still another option, although one that would probably be discouraged by the huge egos of both Hillary and Obama, as well as their mutual enmity.
In terms of popularity, though, I bet it could work. There are still enough voters who would happily follow Obama over any cliff.
As Caleb Howe points out at RedState, however:
Beutler’s whole idea misses a pretty big point. The last sentence of the 12th amendment reads “But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”
That might seem to forbid the whole endeavor, since the 22nd Amendment forbids Obama from running for president again. I’m not entirely sure, however, whether “constitutionally ineligible” is the same as “barred from being elected.”
Let’s hope we don’t have to find out.
Say hello to his little “friends”…

you didnt do that much research on it, did you?
We exist in an emergency state now, and things have been used and justified by it… so it doesnt take anything other than will…
The United States is in a perpetual state of national emergency.
Thirty separate emergencies, in fact.
see? no national emergency necessary, its been done already… not an issue there..
did you know?
An emergency declared by President Jimmy Carter on the 10th day of the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979 remains in effect almost 35 years later.
AND
A post-9/11 state of national emergency declared by President George W. Bush – and renewed six times by President Obama – forms the legal basis for much of the war on terror.
Those emergencies, declared by the president by proclamation or executive order, give the president extraordinary powers – to seize property, call up the National Guard and hire and fire military officers at will.
AND they exist and are enforced already…
its a done deal for a long time… which i mentioned it a long time ago, READ THE EO and STATEMENTS… but alas, i could not break through the wall of jello…
a mind is a hard thing to change or influence, said neo
“What the National Emergencies Act does is like a toggle switch, and when the president flips it, he gets new powers. It’s like a magic wand. and there are very few constraints about how he turns it on,” said Kim Lane Scheppele, a professor at Princeton University.
but dont worry… it hasnt bothered you for over 6 years, why should it suddenly bother you now?
In his six years in office, President Obama has declared nine emergencies, allowed one to expire and extended 22 emergencies enacted by his predecessors
so… why does it bother you now?
attorney Patrick Thronson identified 160 laws giving the president emergency powers, including the authority to:
so there really is nothing needed for him to do anything… its been done already, and the surprise is if he acts on it… not if he can act on it, can is done, will is in question
[have to go so i have to leave it at this]
Artfldgr:
You misunderstood what I wrote.
I was reporting what other people have been writing rather than my point of view: “Conservatives have long been wondering…The leading theory is…”
My point of view was, and is, that Obama could do whatever he wanted unless people were willing to stop him.
Hrc/messiah ticket is a non-starter. Forget about the pesky 22nd, they hate each other with a passion beyond Hatfield and McCoy.
I don’t believe Obama is interested in any more terms. He’s ready to rake in the really big bucks in the post-presidency.

They’ve ALREADY worked together for the sake of their rotten ideology; I expect they will continue to do so at any/ every opportunity. BUT. (heh, heh “Biiig But” and you can read that with one “t” or two, snicker) — I’d bet Hillary-as-President (if Obama were Veep) would feel the need to hire food tasters and body doubles, would stay away from windows and open areas, would never announce travel plans until the last minute … and would never, never, EVER agree to meet anyone in Ft. Marcy Park.
Anonnymouse,
They kept close because they follow the dictum of keeping your enemy close. Think Hitler and Ernst Rohm.
Constitutionally?
Obama?
Heh….
But actually, as mentioned above, Obama has no plans to be president again.
It’s not about the bucks, though.
He’ll have achieved his goal of damaging the US sufficiently by December 2016 to be able to retire with satisfaction. (Not to mention what’ll happen to the Jewish State…)
BTW, to see why Hillary absolutely MUST be elected in November 2015, see the Belmont Club….
By that same logic, we could get a Clinton/Clinton ticket.
President Bill Clinton already weighed in on this idea. It was suggested many years ago that Clinton run again as a VP. Even he rejected the idea as unconstitutional.
In any case, President Obama doesn’t want a third term.
First and fore most he wants to be a king maker, helping the next Democratic candidate to become President. In the process, promises will be made and gifts exchanged for various favors. And future candidates will also need to go through him as he leads big money and a large army of followers.
His second goal will be to become UN General Secretary. Then he will proceed to add to the power of the UN — under his control — much as he’s illegally added to the power of the Presidency.
His ultimate goal is for the UN Secretary General Obama to be basically king of the world.
The clueless weaklings of this world deserve a King like that, if nothing else.
Slight problem though. The French have an absolute veto on any Secretary General candidate. So the big problems are that they don’t want anybody that doesn’t speak French because they think they’re still a world power. It doesn’t help that people have already blown the whole “He’ll totally learn French on the job” line of thought with Ban Ki Moon.(They’re not going to fall for that a second time.) Of course he didn’t help things by blowing them off by not showing up for that solidarity march a few months ago. Then again since it’s Barry he probably thinks he’s got the whole thing in the bag so he didn’t need to go.
