More child singers channeling older ones
The other day I wrote about a child singer from Norway who invokes the memory of Billie Holiday.
Here’s a British kid with a different old-fashioned style:
The original:
I’d never heard the full song in the original version before I did the research for this piece. It’s very beautiful. The lyrics were written by an American, Nat Burton, who’d never been to England and didn’t know there were no bluebirds there.
The Cliffs have a symbolic meaning for Brits, or at least they used to at the time the song was written:
The cliffs have great symbolic value in Britain because they face towards Continental Europe across the narrowest part of the English Channel, where invasions have historically threatened and against which the cliffs form a symbolic guard. Because crossing at Dover was the primary route to the continent before the advent of air travel, the white line of cliffs also formed the first or last sight of England for travelers.
Here’s a photo taken from the French coast:
The kid does a very heartfelt rendition of The White Cliffs of Dover. We’ll Meet Again is another poignant Vera Lynn song of the era: http://tinyurl.com/kbx8be2
Vera Lynn is still with us — she turned 97 on March 20 this year.
And she herself made her stage debut at the age of seven. Wonder what she sang for it?

“Vera” is a song by Pink Floyd which appears on their 1979 album, The Wall.
The opening dialogue (“Where the hell are you, Simon?”) and the sound effects are from the 1969 film The Battle of Britain.
and a correction

when i reported it, it was better than now…
OK, I might as well mention it. Ever since I switched to the Epic browser, I can’t see embedded videos here. They’re just blank white spaces. I also have the same problem at PJM, but in that case I see black rectangles with play arrows that don’t work.
Other sites such as Ace of Spades and YouTube work fine.
It may be a plugin problem on my end, but I have no idea what to do about it. Epic also blocks cookies and tracking software, so that might also have something to do with it.
Apart from the video problems on certain sites, I really like Epic.
Western cuteness is in its early days.
The West has spent too much time on socialist propaganda.
while we prattle about child singers…
the old child distraction of pyongyang, and soviets…
the left is redefining voting in the US
With little fanfare and nearly no national media attention, the National Popular Vote effort is now 61 percent of the way toward its goal of legally bypassing the Electoral College established in the U.S. Constitution.
Last month, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the National Popular Vote, or NPV, bill, making his state the 11th jurisdiction to enact the plan. With the passage of the bill, the interstate compact now has 61 percent of the 270 electoral votes needed to put it into effect.
Art…
No small state should sign off on it.
Is that really 22 miles? Or is it something to do with the optics of the camera that makes it look so much closer?
My favorite Vera Lynn song: We’ll Meet Again, especially the version sung at the end of Doctor Strangelove while the bombs are falling.
