Pieces of Flight 370 found?
I just turned on the TV as some of the cable news networks were engaged in hyping the fact that Australia has announced that satellites have imaged two pieces of debris in the southern Indian Ocean that might be from the disappeared flight. They are sending planes there to take a more extensive look.
This could be another incident like the Chinese satellite images that turned out to be nothing. On the other hand, this announcement was made by the Australian prime minister Tony Abbott. So it seems that something more may be up, or at least that these particular objects have a higher degree of similarity to what might have come from an airplane.
I know that I want the mystery cleared up. I want the plane to be found. I know that I also believe the passengers are dead either way: whether this was successful terrorism that met its goal, unsuccessful terrorism with the plane crashing before its goal was met, or whether the whole thing was an accident after all. But when the possibility of finding some debris from the plane was announced, I also realized that I must have been holding onto some sort of hope that the passengers would be found alive after all, because I felt some sorrow.
If this debris is from the plane it would mean, of course, that they are dead. It would also mean that at some point the black boxes would probably be found, though, and enough information gleaned to discover what happened. I also read that black box cockpit voice recorders only contain the last two hours of the flight—that they record in a loop, and earlier parts of a flight are erased. If that is so, we would only get the voice data concerning the final two hours of the flight, which would not include the crucial hours of the beginning of the mechanical problem or hijacking. On the other hand, the flight data recorder can yield 25 hours of flight data, which would certainly include the technical information for the entirety of Flight 370.
}}} I also read that black box cockpit voice recorders only contain the last two hours of the flight–that they record in a loop, and earlier parts of a flight are erased.
In this day and age, I see absolutely no reason for them to be this limited. 128gigs of flash ram is like a buck a gig, so the capacity of a box the size of your fist — even WITH extensive shock proofing and other
“violent-event” protections is many, many hours. No need to replace existing ones but surely they can be replaced on rotation as they reach replacement age.
I must say that the Aussie PM sounds a good deal more intelligent than the dolt in the White House. Aussie reporters are just as stupid as ours though.
One of the reasons for only recording two hours of voice is that the pilot’s union, ALPA, has always been concerned about the voice recordings being used by management to discipline/harass pilots. This may seem paranoid until you see how heated contract negotiations can become. And how underhanded management can be in dealing with the union when they want to. I could write a book about the nasty way my old employer treated pilots during a contract dispute back in 1985. Anyway, that’s the reason for the limit on the length of CVR recording. Most of the applicable conversation during most accidents/incidents is covered by two hours of recording. This incident/accident seems to have occurred over a much longer period than normal. A one off type of thing.
Seems like if Abbott spoke they must think they have something.
By all indications, this was pilot suicide motivated in part by political suppression of the opposition party in Malaysia by a government that while ostensibly elected, has been plagued by nepotism.
If so, be prepared for a 2 hr political diatribe on the voice recorder.
Like to know why the Aussies think this is related. Ocean’s full of junk. Particularly south of the Capes (Horn and Good Hope)
Satellites can read a license plate, but they have to be pointed at it. So I guess there was some kind of program which filtered out normal ocean returns and picked up on…junk. Then you zoom in.
Can anyone explain why it’s even possible to turn off the transponder(s)? What legitimate reason could there ever be for disabling it/them?
Just wondering…
A friend of mine said, “Those black boxes can stand up to anything! Why don’t they make the whole plane out of that stuff?”
This airplane and its fate is news, to be sure.
But, I can’t help wondering if this apparent wall to wall coverage, such a strong focus on this story and on each new little piece of information or speculation, this 24/7, saturation coverage isn’t–in part or almost in whole–part of the MSMs deliberate attempts to focus virtually all our attention on this story and not on the catastrophic totality that is the fruit of the Obama Administration at work, on, say, our increasingly lawless President, Obama’s totally failed foreign policy, Putin’s annexation of the Crimea and the events in the Ukraine, the Iranian warships recently cruising off our coast, Chinas military aggressiveness, all sorts of warning signs that the severe economic consequences from the Obama administration’s manipulations of our finances and currency are likely to start to appear, Obama’s deliberate weakening of our military power and position, the daily unfolding disaster that is Obamacare, the NSA, the IRS, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, government figures showing almost no inflation and supermarket prices demonstrating quite significant inflation, Obama’s intended giveaway of U.S. control over the Internet, etc., etc.
each night been doing about 1000 images on tomnod…
(you all know that there is a place to do that, right? or did i forget to put it up?)
Yalta II (ya all know where that is, right?), Shoa II, sudentland II… / anyone other than me tired of reruns?
Doesnt Biden evoke confidence and trust?
Last week, Russia suspended food imports through Lithuania’s port of Klaipeda, a move local businesses saw as Moscow’s way of exerting political pressure.
Latvia’s finance minister said on Monday the EU should compensate any countries hurt by its sanctions against Russia.
Wolla Dalbo, I somewhat agree with you. This wall-to-wall coverage on the “missing plane” is partly to have news that isn’t about Obama’s failures.
But, I also think this coverage is what the news media does a lot of – beat a story to death!
So much of the coverage is not FACTS; a lot of it is opinion and who thinks what, who suspects what, who is speculating on what, ad nauseam.
They do it so much that whenever there is a big story I stop watching the TV news for a couple of days to get away from the non-stop coverage and often miss the REAL news when they finally do find facts.
Thank God for the internet where I can get the news the way I want it, sort of.
Given that it has been almost two weeks without a hostage claim, it is probably safe to infer that the passengers are already dead. If finding some bits of wreckage gives the families a degree of closure then I’m hoping that this will suffice.
It would also remove the concern that the aircraft has been landed somewhere for a later nefarious use. We should all take a bit of comfort from that.
Richard’s right: ocean is full of junk. In this case 1550 miles off the coast of Australia.
Mr. Obama’s CIA Chief, John Brennan, refuses even to identify the persecutors. He says we cannot call them jihadists because jihad is a legitimate tenet of the Muslim religion. We cannot call them radical Islamists, because that would be disrespectful to a major world religion.
thats good…
but you CAN call white men racist class of oppressors who are privleleged and the world wont be safe till they dont exist…
President Obama named Rashad Hussain as his personal envoy to the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The group meets regularly and issues communiqués. It seems never to have placed the issue of human rights or religious persecution on its agenda.
fancy that…
note that a plane going nose down from a very high distance will be like a diver… it will just go under… not come back up… and maybe is sitting next to the rock pile of the Trieste in challenger deep…
but, since the russians control the terrorists… (As they have bragged abotu for over 50 years). i am sure this is just a distraction that will keep the news parading people who come up and either say “we dont know where it is” or maybe a black hole swallowed it up (and they say IQ is not genetic!)
it must be cheap to have idiots come up and say such things and not have to cover the war in europe, the massing of material, the nato countries who are afraid, the biden based feel goods and all that expensive stuff…
of course… how can a westerner concieve that a missing plane was a wonderful distraction and that all war is misinformation on some level..
reminds me of when i went fishing once and saw the fish on the deck out of their element all gasping and flopping about with no idea whats going on or what is really happening to them.
Charles,
I agree with you 100% about the “news media”. I was raised from a young age immersed in news. My dad worked for WGN in Chicago and we received 2 newspapers a day and 3 on Sunday. From the time I could read I went through them daily. And since he was a television engineer and television repairman as a side-business, we had a TV in every room before that was customary, so I watched the news as well. I was pretty much disengaged from MSM coverage and getting my news via the internet by the time of Hurricane Katrina, but that is the one that did it for me. Haven’t tuned in since.
they generally record 17 or so hours of info.
However. Everyone thinks that certain things are EASY which are not (and that the worlds reality is defined by their imagination and what they think sounds good!! and all way too lazy to just do a query, read a paragraph
It’s the way the leftists think when they design the new medical system, and the new wooden skyscrapers, and traffic lights powered by local barrels of feces and urine, and so on. This dysfunctional way to think is normalized to the point that we no longer look at people doing it like they are nutters as we did in the past… oh, cars run by tiny dragons in the engines… the world is as we imagine it, not as it is… how about… the world is how it is, regardless of how you imagine it, and one day yu will be dead, and if it was your imagination running things, we would be too.
Why not do three seconds of research and find out what the damn things requirements are?
no no… cause its much better to piss in everyone’s brains while pretending to be erudite…
(Drives me nuts, cant you tell).
we no longer respect other people enough to not hurt their thinking by caring enough to spend a bit of our time to negate bad information and stop passing it along
why not? you can be seen as smart by idiots if you just do that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_data_recorder
Currently, EUROCAE specifies that a recorder must be able to withstand an acceleration of 3400 g (33 km/s²) for 6.5 milliseconds.
the average compact flash card is 10 grams
this means that for the time period (6.5 milliseconds) the thing weighs 75lbs
do you think the tiny gold wires of a standard chip can handle a weight differential going from 10grams to 75 lbs and back to 10 grams in 7 thousandths of a second?
ya have to love the many ways you can state this:
This is roughly equivalent to an impact velocity of 270 knots (310 mph) and a deceleration or crushing distance of 450 cm.
from 350 miles per hour to zero in 14 feet
FDRs are usually located in the rear of the aircraft, typically in the tail. In this position, the entire front of the aircraft is expected to act as a “crush zone” to reduce the shock that reaches the recorder.
Generally each parameter is recorded a few times per second, though some units store “bursts” of data at a much higher frequency if the data begins to change quickly. Most FDRs record approximately 17—25 hours worth of data in a continuous loop.
modern FDRs are typically double wrapped, in strong corrosion-resistant stainless steel or titanium, with high-temperature insulation inside. They are usually bright orange. They are designed to emit an underwater locator beacon for up to 30 days and can operate immersed to a depth of up to 6,000 meters (20,000 ft)
thats about 4 miles under water…
challenger deep is around 7
now.. think of how small the leftists think this planet is!
yet, you can go deeper than 7 miles under water…
also.
you guys are confusing the flight data recorder with the CVR cockpit voice recorder.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockpit_voice_recorder
so if you want to hear the voices… its shorter…
The earliest CVRs used analog wire recording, later replaced by analog magnetic tape. Some of the tape units used two reels, with the tape automatically reversing at each end. The original was the ARL Flight Memory Unit produced in 1957 by Australian David Warren and an instrument maker named Tych Mirfield.
Like the flight data recorder (FDR), the CVR is typically mounted in the tail section (the empennage) of an airplane to maximize the likelihood of its survival in a crash.[5]
Although it is commonly believed that flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders are required on all US aircraft, in fact, they are only required on US aircraft that have 20 or more passenger seats or those that have six or more passenger seats, are turbo-charged, and require two pilots
that took me only a few minutes to read…
took a lot longer to format and write…
how long did it take you to pass along the bad information?
now you know why the left wins
the good people are too lazy
they are way way too distracted
and have the same broken thinking, superiority that what they imagine is better than what the other imagines, and have lost their respect for their fellow man in which you do not give out bad information just to participate in a conversation (any more than you would whip out your johnson and piss in a crowd)
sigh
Stolen passports were carried by two Iranian men boarding as “Entertainers” in china.
This is right out of history… remembering ARGO the movie that never was in the fictionalized version?
The Canadian Caper?
They have a few fetishes that always appear. One is dates, another is historical paybacks, word games, etc… they can’t resist cluing their victims in then enjoying the victims are too stupid to “get it” (even if you spell it out to them!)
“I remember at the time, these contracts looked very suspicious. Normally when we recruit performers they are from the Philippines or Russia, where wages are cheap, not Western European countries like Italy and Austria,’’ said Xie, who says an office manager for his company, Ningxi Overseas Prosperity Cultural Import. Co., handled the contracts
do remember who Irans partner in crime is… russia transports weapons through there to all the other places they destabilize to make oil more expensive and keep african raw materials off the market.
who is now chattering about assiting iran with nukes?
what a great partnership… months ahead, they conspire to take a plane and make it disappear.
why?
because THAT is something that will garner watching and not paying attention to other things.
just ask a fighter pilot what happens when they get so focused on the subject and forget there is a reality around them… (not good)

Charles–For close to 25 years in my former profession I was regularly reading through a vast universe of print and electronic information sources.
Comparing coverage and details from one source to another, it quickly became clear that the ever more left leaning MSM’s coverage of events was extremely selective, was often nowhere near complete, and that many stories of significance were just not reported, were given short shrift, and/or that key pieces of information were very often left out, distorted, or deliberately misinterpreted by that MSM.
Moreover, that not only what facts were chosen to be reported or emphasized, but also how a story was reported–the tone of the article, and the specific words used–were decisive in shaping perceptions.
For example, with reference to actual coverage of a particular murder trial by two newspapers–one conservative, one liberal–according to the liberal paper the defendant was an “ex-priest,” according to the conservative paper he was a “defrocked” one, the conservative paper reported that the defendant had donned his old priestly garb to gain entry to the house where the murder was committed, the liberal paper apparently didn’t think that this key piece of information was worthy of mention, the conservative paper reported the grisly details of the actual murder, but the liberal paper did not–under the guise of sparing its readers, and the liberal paper’s last report on this case said that the defendant “denied his guilt” and “had always maintained his innocence,” while the conservative paper–reporting one day after the last coverage of this case in the liberal paper –reported that just before the trial was about to start the defendant “admitted his guilt” and ”copped a plea.”
Same defendant, same set of facts to choose among to report, and same murder trial, but if you read only one of the two newspapers and not the other, you got an entirely different picture of the case than if you read the other paper, or both.
That’s why you need FOX TV and the Internet in addition to the MSM, to alert you to the fact that one source may not be giving you all of the facts, or may be twisting or misinterpreting them and, moreover, to gain a different perspective.
Peter MacFarlane:
An answer to your question is here.
just think of how much dirty stuff is normal for spetznatz…
there have been a few sniper attacks where the sniper shot one person one each side!!!
dont think this happens?
then go back and read neos thread on Kent State and the fact we now know a leftist shot off a handgun.
anne althouse brings it up
http://althouse.blogspot.com/2010/10/kent-state-tape-indicates-altercation.html
from washingon times:
Previously undisclosed FBI documents suggest that the Kent State antiwar protests were more meticulously planned than originally thought and that one or more gunshots may have been fired at embattled Ohio National Guardsmen before their killings of four students and woundings of at least nine others on that searing day in May 1970.
the signature of the left is to orchetrate false events and distractions for gain..
how many years did they get to milk this event to create a certain kind of mind in people in the US and a certain regard towards our own government?
how many can still use this event, confident that the majority know a false history that gives them a different beleif system to base their view of their own country?
reverse it, and what are they doing to play with the heads of the US people in terms of thinking that putin is fighting fascism?
you forget, the soviets used this ruse to astounding success in their games in getting famous ammericans to come to spain to fight fascism, but did not know they were helping communism…
why do we believe the disenformation about our own people but not the information about others
it was the soviets that invented using passenger planes as weapons as various people of their bragged about inventing it from arafat to ceucescau
from
The Arafat I Knew
of course this is all forgotten (Despite my mentioning it before)
in other words they will go to great extremes to fix slights…
given the history, a plane of people are a useful nothing that can do what they want with to serve their purposes.
arafat was such a loose cannon they killed himi with polonium.
remember the man with the most predictions of what would transpire, higher than 90% rate, including the soviet break up, the wall coming down and more, said that all this was for show (as gorbachev did) and that soon, they will use this show to their advantage making great preparations (with open borders)
