Why is New England…
…such a happy area of the country?
I dunno; must like cold and snow, I guess.
But the northern midwest is the happiest part of all—brrrr!

Washington and Colorado ==> Stoner highs.
The farm states are rolling in lucre — thank you corn to ethanol!
Let’s see, North Dakota, top of the list, shoulder deep in good paying Bakken oil-field jobs; West Virginia, bottom of the list as Obama shuts down the coal industry.
Whodda thunk it?
The People’s Republic of Illinois moved up from 28th to 22nd. This, alone, makes me doubt the validity of the study. Anybody who lives in this cesspool knows Illinois should be ranked in the bottom 10%.
Those results are unbelievable. I spent the winter of 1962 working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The temperature went down to 40 below zero in Minneapolis and it never got above 10 below all winter. It was a status symbol to have a car that would start. It was a terrible winter. I was never so happy as when I left.
maybe its cause they dont know about the budapest agreement…
Assuming the Northeast really is “happy, happy, happy” land I’ll suggest that part of that may be the diverse flora and fauna and countryside and a lack of catastrophic natural phenoms like hurricanes, tornado’s, earthquakes, mudslides, brush fires.
For folks who like animals and the out of doors the Northeast is wonderful. For people who don’t want to die from natural disasters the Northeast is wonderful.
The Northeast is also wonderful for Bolshevik, anti-Americans as well.
Maine used to be a bunch of frontiersman that voted against FDR.
Ymarsakar:
Vermont, too. That’s pretty amazing, considering what Vermont’s like now. But it’s such a small state, populationwise, that it can be changed fairly easily.
In 1936 only two states in the entire US voted against FDR: Maine and Vermont.
Ray:
Then maybe it’s cause all the unhappy people have already left 🙂 .
Its jobs for one thing, the upper midwest is doing all right. The area, as side from the Twin Cities, is homogenous in racial and cultural terms. People tend to be happier when they feel commonality with their community. Spike Lee can tell you all about that sense of commonality. 😉

Illiniois is to the USA as Greece is to the EU. It will be the first state to seek federal aid to prop it up.
The rolling hills, forests, and quaint towns of New England always make me feel very cozy when I’m there; this together with the communitarian culture, particularly of Northern New England, make it a terrific place to live.
My great difficulty with polls is that they only poll people willing to take polls. It’s sort of like modern science, where they try to prove, not disprove theories. Politics and science both seem to be based on poor systems that are either rigged or junk. How many people have limited their phone access to work projects, how many are too busy either working or relaxing from hard work to deal with such calls, and who is it, exactly, that answers these calls and has the time to field them? My guess is you don’t want to know.
I am not even sure there is a good way to judge whether the people in a state are satisfied, other than looking at the populations with the economic freedom to move, and seeing how many of those do move.
If you are going to read such polls, with any belief, might I suggest a ouija board, star charts, or even most “science papers”. I have to wonder how many doctoral theses have been based, in whole or part, on those papers. Yeah.
Think of population density.
Or, as Sartre put it, “hell is other people.”
I think Doom has it right. I have no more interest in polls than I do in soap operas.
Of course the Democrat ruling class in their bastions are feeling happy. In DC, their wages go up, while yours go down. That makes them happy.
We in Florida are much happier in the summer when all the unhappy New Englanders and Midwesterners go back home. This month has been terrible for us. It seems everyone in the north is calling their travel agents and begging them to get out of the north. So, Florida is full. Too bad we can’t close the borders for the rest of the month.
