Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches…
…are racist. Against somebody, somewhere:
Apparently, it’s because people in some cultures don’t eat sandwich bread. Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School in Portland explained to the Portland Tribune:
“Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year,” the Tribune said.
“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” Gutierrez asked. “Another way would be to say: ”˜Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”
”¦The Tribune noted that the school started the new year with “intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives,” to help educators understand their own “white privilege,” in order to “change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance.””Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation ”” to examine a news article and discuss the ”˜white privilege’ it conveys,” the Tribune added.
I assume Gutierrez has never heard of the Cuban. Although I assume the Cuban is racist:
But whether PB&J sandwiches are racist or not, I think they’re mean. To me. Because I can’t eat peanut butter; it gives me migraines, even though I love it.
So when I’m queen I will ban all talk of them.
The peanut + jelly was hard to put into the stomach without the milk. At times I felt I was dying of dehydration.
But it was good, though not as good as the fried chicken. Which it seems I was able to de-meat so that only 5 bones were left.
Yes, I’ll try to remember how much that peanut butter and jelly sandwich represents my “white privilege” when I have it for dinner because of this Obama economy.
Or better yet; I’ll really flaunt my white privilege by having a fluffernutter instead!
God, I hate leftists.
Mustn’t hate Ricki. Abhor?
I know it is too simplistic, but wonder why the Leftists never thought of introducing Somalis, and others who voluntarily came to the U.S. to that long time staple of American children–the PB&J. I am sure they would love them.
Hmm! Hmmm! Cubans. Or as they were called in Ybor City, “Cuban Mixed”.
Lucked into a Cuban restaurant in Warrenton, Va of all places. Substitute yellow rice on one order, and black beans on the other for the standard side of french fries (Cuban fries?), then mix the two, and you have a meal fit for Conquistadors (Oh, racist)
Have you tried using almond or cashew butter as a substitute?
“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly…”
Interesting that she assumes Somalis and Hispanics aren’t Americans. I would think these students are somewhere in the process of becoming naturalized citizens if they weren’t born here to immigrant parents.
Why can’t Gutierrez just let the (potentially) confused or offended students just pipe up during the lesson – “What’s a sandwich?” or “We don’t have those in Somalia” – and let it naturally play out? Because it isn’t about protecting students so much as making sure American culture is removed from the classroom.
Just had a thought: Teachers should use McDonald’s hamburgers as the example since these can be found pretty much everywhere. Heh.
Good grief. I read about this and figured it was like most other “training” sessions that are done regarding race or poverty. It’s like these experts combat one stereotype by invoking another.
One of my childhood friends is an elementary teacher and she was awestruck after a seminar on “culture of poverty.” She told me about a scenario in which a little boy goes up and grabs a girl’s butt and how you’re not supposed to tell him it’s not nice (let alone wrong) because maybe he learned at home that’s what mom’s girlfriend does when they’re getting along.
“I never thought of it that way,” she said.
“So,” I said, “what if the little girl is from a home where having your butt grabbed means you’re going to be sexually assaulted by mom’s boyfriend? So now she feels unsafe because you blew off the little boy’s behavior.”
Uh-oh….
As a funny bonus, I was looking at some of the accompanying material and saw the comments about “culture of poverty” and such. It said that poor people aren’t used to having money, so if they get it, they blow it. That’s why you’ll see a kid dressed in rags and Mom will come in with extensions and acrylic nails. So teachers are supposed to understand that, and think of ways to get that kid clothes WITHOUT OFFENDING MOM.
Oh, yeah. Lord forbid a neglectful parent should shoulder some responsibility.
Lizzy, I’m sure there’s some rule in that school about not promoting fast food. 🙂
“white privilege”!!???? peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!!!!
I think there should be a White Pride Day and only “white privilege” sandwiches should be served. The left can choke on it.
The left cannot change the moral white voter, so they are changing the population of this country.
Have you ever noticed that white privilege assumes that only whites have agency and everybody else is helpless? What the proponents of white privelege are really saying is that they are just poor helpless babies who are incompetent or unable to succeed on their on. In other words, a bunch of losers doomed to failure and looking for someone to blame. I’m surprised Obama hasn’t blamed white privilege.
This is yet another disgusting example of leftists out of control.
The entire educational system is in need of some real “fundamental transformation.”
Ummm, a cuban pressed sandwich….yummm!
Now, I’m hungry. Thanks.
Obviously, in order to not be racist to the black students, the teacher should have used fried chicken and watermelon as examples of food. That would have worked!
“Have you ever noticed that white privilege assumes that only whites have agency and everybody else is helpless? ”
It’s a curious resurgence and even extension of the “white man’s burden” idea, which would completely horrify those who are pushing it.
Because . . . slavery?
Because . . . Trayvon?
Because . . . diversity?
I dunno.
[mumbles incoherently]
Let me outta here.
Pleeeeze?
“So when I’m queen I will ban all talk of them.”
All shall love you and despair.
I’ve been wondering how to combat this without getting in the mire of a foolish discussion of white privilege. Perhaps we can just say ‘that’s your truth, not mine’ would suffice since moral relativism is a pillar of leftism.
Fried chicken and watermelon may be racist stereotypes in the North, but all Southerners eat both, by the uncounted ton. Everybody’s Mama has the secret of the best fried chicken in the world, all different, of course, At office potlucks, a friendly debate often arises over some fine point of chicken frying. The sides line up, and they are utterly skew lines with any racial boundary, intersecting at no point.
Almond butter and cashew butter may cost a bit more, but they are pretty good, and ought not to give one migraines. Peanut butter, too, is a food that crosses racial lines. PBJ is not something that everyone likes, but Southerners, Black and White, will put it on cornbread, or on pancakes, or apples. Kids in school learn a song from the Confederate Army about peanuts, called ‘goober peas.’ Well, they did, fifty years ago.

At first I was curious what that meant. Then decided that I didn’t care; not if it somehow is linked to slavery, and Trayvon.
This is ridiculous in the extreme… like all PC, diversity, yada-yada BS. Leftists are the walking brain dead.
“So when I’m queen I will ban all talk of them.”
One of my sayings (mostly used at work when things aren’t going the way I think they should, but it has general applicability):
If I was dictator of the world, things would be different.
Not necessarily better, but *definitely* different.

Interesting idea. Throw it back in their faces.
Hispanic students means they eat pitas … how “white” of them.
I have no known food allergies. Vote for me if you like what you eat and want to keep it.
culture of poverty… is pure bigotry. There is no inherent correlation between people who are poor, less educated, etc. and deviant or uncouth behavior. There is nature and nurture, and sabotaged character development, which afflicts men and women irrespective of their circumstance.
These people were taught at university to analyze everything through the lens of race, gender, class, etc.
That’s the starting point for any topic.
Maybe they were bored with the other lenses, but that doesn’t mean the new ones are correct.
I feel your pain, NNC. I love Guinness, but all stouts give me migraines, so I have to refrain from drinking it.
Maybe all leftists aren’t totally brain dead. I just found an intelligent piece at Daily Kos, of all places, about this craziness that says this:
and this:
This story is a bit over a year old, by the way. Wonder why it’s getting some play again?
Of course peanut butter is racist it was invented by that noted racist and klansman, George Washington Carver.
Winner- Lizzy:
“Because it isn’t about protecting students so much as making sure American culture is removed from the classroom.”
bob r, the version I prefer is “Caesar si viveret ad remum dareris.” (If Caesar was alive, you’d be chained to an oar)
And here I always thought that Peanut Butter was developed by that infamous White man – George Washington Carver. Hmm! Fancy that! 😀
Have there ever been racist who weren’t certain they were righting some world wrongs? The only difference between the modern liberal and an 1850 plantation owner is one of time frame and whose being targeted to make the world right.
tasty, tasty racism
If there is a more All-American food than the good old PB&J, I can’t imagine what it would be. The peanut butter was the creation of a very self made man, later known as Professor George Washington Carver, born in to slavery from the south. The sandwich bread notions came from Europeans, and the Jelly/Jam is a creation of cultures from all over the world.
It is an example of the ultimate melting pot of food, culture, and technology. Maybe we should encourage immigrant kids to try one.
Oldflyer
Oldflyer, do you realize that the Cuban name for black beans and rice is Moros y Cristianos? [Moors/Muslims and Christians] Which refers, not to Conquistadors and a Conquest, but to the Reconquista- the reconquest of Spain from the Muslim IMPERIALIST INVADERS.
While George Washington Carver invented and promoted many different uses for the peanut, and is often credited with being the inventor of peanut butter, it appears that someone beat him to it. Marcellus Gilmore Edson, an Anglophone [English speaking] resident of Montreal was awarded U.S. Patent #306,727 for peanut butter in 1884, when George Washington was 20.
According to Wiki, peanut butter was used by the Aztecs and also in Bolivia before the arrival of Spaniards in the New World. Peanuts figure prominently in some Mexican dishes, such as the myriad variations on mole. As such, the multiculturalists should be singing the praises of peanut butter instead of viewing it as an artifact of cultural imperialism. Used in pre-Colombian cultures, patented by a Canadian, promoted by George Washington Carver, a prominent black. How can you get more multi-culti than peanut butter?
When I worked in Latin America, I was quite content to eat foods then not readily available in the US, such as mangoes and tasty tomatoes. About the only US food I missed was peanut butter. PB and raisins is one of my favorites.
I find it rather amusing that some multi-culti savant wants to accommodate to the Somalis, given that when in the US, many Somalis act as if the US should accommodate to their habits, rather than vice versa. I refer to the Somali taxicab drivers in the Minneapolis St. Paul area who several years back refused to transport passengers who had either a dog or alcoholic beverages with them. THAT is cultural imperialism.

peanut butter and jelly is what I eat when I am too broke/tired/lazy to go to the grocery store.
Any Somali or Hispanic students in class for the PB&J moment are much better served by being educated about this culture they are now having to function in than to be left ignorant of it because of such misguided political correctness.
Michael,
goodness how delicious,
eating goober peas!
Funny leftists, where you see oppression other see education.
Cause people from Somali should never be told about sandwiches, or something?
I had a chance to socialize with some japanese businessmen years ago. They really wanted to show me how great raw fish and squid etc tasted. I balked at some of it. (racist?) When they came here the all politely declined cheese cubes. I had made good friends with some of the younger ones, got the a little drunk and they confessed that the idea of eating spoiled milk (cheese) just blew them away. See there. You just learned something didnt you. Fun stuff.
But not if you are a leftist. If you are a leftist you must beat your own breast and proclaim oppression. Which by the implies you hold your own culture as superior . . .
The Sky is racist! It’s too White.
Africans eat peanut butter all them time. They make it into soup. It’s very tasty.
African brand peanut butter:
