Cream cake, dream cake
Yesterday I went to Whole Foods.
I don’t live very close to one. But not too very far away, either. Perhaps just right (in the Goldilocks sense), because any closer and I’d be a lot poorer and a lot fatter, and any further away and I’d be sadder.
Yesterday I succumbed, as I sometimes do, to the seductive call of a piece of Whole Foods almond cream cake. After I’d partaken of its delicately perfumed, almond scented, moist and tender—well, you get the idea—it occurred to me that, unlike its policy with much of the rest of its food, Whole Foods is mum on the calorie content.
No accident, that. I thought perhaps I could find it online and write about it here. But when I Googled “whole foods” almond cream cake calories there was nothing among the first few except some recipes for supposed-but-bogus equivalents—and then, at number four on Google’s list, this previous post that I’d written only a year and a half ago on the very same subject, and which I’d already forgotten about.
I guess I could use the fact that I write approximately three posts a day as an excuse. But anyway, I really, really, really like that cream cake.
Neo, do you ever remember those sci fi stories about alien symbiotes that merged with humans to form a union greater than the sum of their parts?
It just so happens that humans already have them, people call them friendly bacterial living in the gut and digestive systems.
Having a particular kind of bacterial with a useful function, can do all kinds of interesting things when you combine it with special foods.
I have always wondered what it is with humans, different DNA expressions, and diets that produce unpredictable cycles. This should be a big part of the answer.
Also, Chinese chi gong ties into this. They came up with methods to make good use of it, even though they never could explain what it was or why it existed.
This thread might be a good place for this charming mystery: “Resusci Anne and L’Inconnue: the Mona Lisa of the Seine.”

Resusci Anne is the face of the CPR training dolls.
I also succumbed last night to the siren call of a Whole Foods dessert: caramel/walnuts/chocolate bar. I looked all over it for calories, no luck. I’m guessing about 500!
But I haven’t had a rich, bomb-out dessert in a few weeks, so what the hey.
Ah, the sweet pleasure of the Dark Side! For me it’s pecan pie.
The worst sin is Lindy’s cheese cake. (Sinatra: Guys & Dolls — renamed Mindy’s for the film)
It’s THE New York cheese cake.
Totally addictive.
Don’t take one bite.
It’s the opiate of the tongue.
Talenti’s Sea-Salt Carmel gelato was my favorite sea-salt carmel dessert, of which there are many these days. You can get it at Whole Foods, and a number of other grocery stores, at least where I live. The high calorie count is listed on the container but this won’t deter you, it’s so damned good. Eventually however, you stop craving it (but not before you’ve gained a few pounds).
I avoided Whole Foods as soon as I saw the number of Prius’s parked there. 🙂
I am crazy about the regular old yellow cake with buttercream frosting at Whole Foods. I don’t know why I prefer their version…it just seems like the perfect balance to me. Sweet but not too sweet.
I shop there often because they carry many gluten free items and I have a couple of celiacs in the household. We non-celiacs find ourselves eating a lot of food from Aldi’s to make up for the grocery bills at Whole Foods.
I generally find The Whole Foods shopping experience to be annoying. Too many Obama bumper stickers in the parking lot!
I like Whole Foods, something fun about parking a 12 year GMC really close to someone’s Prius and wandering through buying Louisiana coffee in their import aisle….
Once a year is usually enough for me .
Hello there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website?
I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking
at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if
you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
