Public on legal immigration: too much
A majority says it should be reduced.
The poll was taken right after the capture of the Boston bomber—legal immigrant, and US citizen of less than a year’s duration. The first anniversary of his becoming a citizen will occur on September 11, 2013.
The results represent a spike:
A just-released Fox News poll finds 55 percent of voters think fewer legal immigrants should be accepted into the U.S. That’s up from 43 percent in 2010.
Quite a jump, isn’t it? My hunch is that the figure will go down again, at least somewhat, as the recency of the Boston bombing fades. And even if it doesn’t, don’t look to see legal immigration reduced, especially under this administration. The idea of fewer legal immigrants may be popular with the people, but it doesn’t seem to be all that popular with politicians of either party.
Mere pluralities of the polled, as in the case of pro same sex marriage, inspire legislation, judgments, referendums, and posit the necessity of cultural/religious social acceptance. In the case of majorities of the polled, as in anti-immigration, the opposite happens. Could it be opinions don’t matter; agendas do.
The numbers may go down in the short term ebb and flow — over the long run they will grow — not that it will matter to the people who matter.
Assuming that we want to preserve our culture and living standards, the rate of legal immigration should not exceed the rate of assimilation.
Assuming that we want to curb progressive corruption and its ensuing dysfunction, the rate of illegal immigration should ideally be near or equal to zero.
Are these the same people who want to legalize ten million migrants already here?
They’ll lower legal immigration- the people who wait in line for years, jump through hoops, and are generally more talented and law-abiding, but will grant amnesty to illegals, encouraging more welfare recipients to enter in and solidify a major voting bloc. A win-win.
Why do the wacky lefties think we’re somehow more oppressive than any other country? What a crock! I lived overseas briefly, first as junior-year-abroad, and later as an intern. It was abundantly clear that if as a non-citizen, you did anythign, ANYTHING illegal, you’d be deported–if you were lucky, and it wasn’t too bad. There was no question of voting or getting on the dole–no way could you do that without an identity card, which you could NOT get unless you were a citizen. If you were landed (like having a green card), you could work, and get SOME benefits–as long as you were working (state health, yes, welfare, NO). This is NORMAL WORLDWIDE! And among the more liberal policies. What is wrong with these crazies HERE?! Do they have NO IDEA what OTHER countries do? Really? Sigh….
They gotta get more slave votes. That way the slave population gets higher and they can re-educate the middle class into the new slave class.
The public slaves aren’t supposed to talk back to their masters like this. They will have to be appropriately adjusted utilizing more terror, trauma, and whippings in the future by the Left.
