This is good
I know, I know. You look down on “American Idol,” think it’s trash, yada yada yada.
Well, sometimes I watch it for fun, along with other fluff du jour, despite the fact that I’m not ordinarily all that keen on over-the-top diva-style pop singing.
But the young woman (age 23) named Candice Glover is good, really really good. Case in point:
I watch every episode. The girls are really excellent this year, but Candice is displacing my early favorites. I didn’t know she was only 23. I figured she was about 30, even so with the musical sense of a much older, seasoned performer. She doesn’t overdo the diva thing, keeps her voice in service to the music, though of course it’s demanded these days that a singer sing in a hyper-emotional style. That performance made me think of a jazz singer in a nightclub in the fifties or sixties. Extraordinary!
…never watch, though I generally surf to the Youtube clips.
…can’t say I like her style though. “Hyper-emotional” lol: yep. Not my cup’a tea at all.
(Which isn’t to say I don’t recognize that she’s very, very good at what she does, mind. More like, I’m abstaining lol.)
Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, et al., they all gave us too much of a good thing.
You just enjoy. We all have our own… peculiar trash. Nothing can account for taste if even the best taste can be questionable and I have known none who haven’t ‘gone ghetto’ from time to time. I’ll go another way, to a different ghetto, thank you, if probably more often. But… Bon enjoyee.
Never watch, sometimes see performances on youtube. Candice is okay but IMO needs to fine tune her delivery.
Ann Pebbles: http://tinyurl.com/ygqwnm6 + http://tinyurl.com/bv6cyb7. Best of Memphis R&B circa early to mid 1970s.
A mass human test like this will always have the normal statistical variant between horrible, bad, normal, good, and genius levels.
The question I have is, how then does our “superior democratic semi republican system” then produce… what it has produced?
Maybe being ruled by political simulations inside MMOs like Eve Online and Reality Shows might actually be “better” than what we have now.
I apologize my second link to Ms Pebble should have been: http://tinyurl.com/cplgc4l
You can’t lose by previewing all of Pebble’s catalogue. She was the mistress of Memphis soul, both in the brevity of her recordings, but it the style and mastery of her phrasing. Pebbles was Franklin with just as much soul with 45% less need to carry on.
Mr. Random Thoughts is an American Idol addict. Me, I can’t stand TV in general, and find reality shows are unbearable. That being said, when Candace sang that song, I stopped what I was doing in the kitchen and actually listened, then asked that he replay her performance. It was that good.
