Cello cheesecake
Forgive me my regional boosterism, but it’s highly unusual for a girl from Rhode Island who goes to Boston University to win Miss USA, let alone Miss Universe. And yet Olivia Culpo has done both—and she’s a classical cellist as well.
I have to say I like Culpo’s red dress here. Note how the rest of the gowns look very pageant-y, but hers is more elegant, like something a classical musician or opera singer might wear for a solo concert.
Note also the very full skirt—the better to play the cello in (not that Culpo played cello in the pageant; there’s no talent competition in Miss Universe, unless you consider strutting your stuff in front of a gazillion people wearing a bikini and sky-high heels a talent, which I suppose it is).
Although I’m very curious, I could find no videos of Culpo sawing away at her cello. But there were three stills, which I present here in ascending (or descending?) order.
First we have the cellist next door:
Next, the Viva Las Vegas cellist:
And finally, sex and the single cellist (I’d never seen a white cello before this, especially one with what appear to be decals on it, but I can’t say I’ve kept up with cello fashion)::
So don’t say I never give you cheesecake. But I try to do it with a little culcha.
[NOTE: And speaking of stringed-instruments and fashion, there’s Julia Fischer.]
Sex and the Single Cellist proves once again that a smile makes a woman prettier by several orders of magnitude — and Ms. Culpo is without visible handicaps from the start. Is it possible to order Sex and the Single Cellist in Poster size?
What a beautiful woman, at least externally. I make no apologies for a full and enthusiastic appreciation for the female form and face. IMHO, no greater form of beauty exists in God’s creation.
But the most beautiful ‘wrapping’ means naught, if the inner gift be lacking.
I won’t offer any excuses, because they are not necessary. I like cheesecake topped with a sweet, pretty, sexy fruit.
Coincidentally, I started reading Neo today while listening to a CD of Pablo Casals playing Bach’s cello suites- paid $17 for a 10 CD set at a local used bookstore. Doubly coincidentally, my next door neighbor’s daughter just came into town for semester break from her studies at Boston University.
Neo, I don’t know if you were aware of my experience with cooking your lebkuchen.
Quite lovely, congrats to her !
What Geoffrey Britain Said.
Here’s the cello cheesecake playing. Pretty decent vibrato and technique:

I’ll take cellist next door any day. She looks sweet and real. The other two–sure, they’re attractive in a gaudy way, but cellist next door is beautiful. The others strike me as big egos I wouldn’t want to talk to. Sad, since it’s the same person. And that white cello looks like such a gimmick. Isn’t that the Facebook ‘F’?
And I’m sick of pretty young women in classical music playing up their sexuality. Cheap attention-grabbing.
Here. Cheesecake with pipes
You tube her stuff (don’t just use the sidebar) — she has a considerable range of styles from operatic (e.g. Ave Maria) to pop.

a) Sex sells. Get used to it.
b) I’d suggest complaining mainly when they’re less than talented.
c) If it brings people in to start, they still have to have talent to keep ’em coming.
Agree that I like the cellist next door best. Miss Olivia has a natural beauty that comes through even when she’s tarted up in her Vegas outfit. But I still prefer the jeans, simple top, straight long hair in the top photo. I’ve never been one for flashy, maybe that’s why I went into accounting rather than marketing or advertising. But I do understand showmanship, and if it helps break classical music out of its (inaccurate) stereotype of being stuffy and elitist, so be it. If it further helps bring young people to the concert hall, and she stays true to the music, then I count that as a good thing.
this blog ought go all the way, and put that cello in jello.
gcotharn:
When I first glanced at the headline, I thought it said “jello cheesecake” and was a recipe thread.
others express their inner cello, violin, viola, etc 🙂

If you watch this Adele video of her at the Royal Albert Hall, you see a line of string players behind her. They’re all very attractive, young, and animated.

Didn’t it used to be a sign of good discipline in an orchestra for the musicians to suppress the (normal) urge to move with the music? When I watch this video, I can’t help but think that a) these gals were chosen for their looks as much as their skills, and b) the director of the video portion of the show encouraged them to move more. It’s as if they are exaggerating the movement.
They probably all want to be the little blond sprite from Celtic Woman who fiddles while running and leaping around the stage, barefoot.
