I think they’re at least perturbed by him, not only because he’s smart and articulate, but because he’s got an incredibly likeable demeanor. That goes against the narrative about Republicans. It’s hard to pin the “callous, cold” label on him and make it stick.
He’s also young, which is attractive as well.
The linked article by Jeffrey Lord took me back to a time—the Reagan era—when I wasn’t paying a whole lot of attention to politics, although I never ignored it entirely. But I was a young mother with a young baby to tend to, and I didn’t choose to spend the almost nonexistent amount of free time I had reading about what was going on in DC.
So I missed little nuggets such as this statement by Democrat Tip O’Neill, House Speaker, referring to Reagan:
The evil is in the White House at the present time. And that evil is a man who has no care and no concern for the working class of America and the future generations of America, and who likes to ride a horse. He’s cold. He’s mean. He’s got ice water for blood.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
And note the “likes to ride a horse” bit. Shades of the liberal critique of Ann Romney. Who knew that demonizing the horsey set had such a lengthy and distinguished political pedigree?

I’m liking Ryan more and more after starting out liking him. And more and more, it’s looking like choosing him as VP running mate was pretty darn smart.
I loved his opening line in a speech yesterday…”It’s great to be in North Carolina or as Joe Biden would say…’It’s great to be here in Nevada.’ ”

I just want to see what happens when the press catches Ryan shirtless. Will they swoon over his physique like the did Obama’s? I think I would rather see Ryan shirtless over Obama any day. (hehehe – couldn’t resist ladies!).
And back to the subject of the post…
Yes, the left is SCARED of a charismatic, articulate, fact based, good looking Republican PERIOD. Ryan has them peeing their pants so they are going to out right call him the devil to try to scare voters away from Romney\Ryan.
You only have to see Ryan speak for a few minutes to see that not only is he a bright guy, but he’s so nice, and he can very effectively communicate complex concepts while still including facts and figures. This is a devastating combination for anyone debating him, because not only does he articulate his point well, but he will not provoked into a hostile response (classic Dem tactic to put the Republican on the defense).
It’s just icing on the cake that he also seems like such a regular, all-American guy instead of some remote, prep-school/ivy league guy who cannot relate to people in flyover country.
The other unexpected quality is how well he appears to get along with Romney, and how he seems to have energized him. They are really a team – so unlike the Obama-Biden ticket.

Given the history of fox hunting in the UK, Boar hunting in germany, and so forth… its had a VERY long distinguished target… and you can throw in polo too… (even the shirts)

the problem becomes easy to see once you realize that the people waiting are not looking for the key things that indicate the reality, but are looking for cargo cult surface things which please their imagination.
after all, its the quantity of laws and the kinds of laws that make a despotic state, not the name you give it, or much of anything else. so even a good state, with endless laws, becomes a despotic one if the answer to law making is “we cant stop”
those who know this stuff from the back end, know the game in a way that the musers on the front, who are confused, and dont do muhc research and connections, and are waiting for superman, Godot, or Moses to deliver them (while they kill time discussing things from ideas, not facts)

As it is, I was delighted when I heard about the Ryan pick and the more coverage he gets, the more impressed I am.
I first saw Ryan on Morning Joe many months ago and immediately liked his pleasant demeanor and smarts. You could tell that Scarborough and the rest really like him too, in spite of the lefty tilt of the cast of characters on that program.
All knew of Ryan at that point was that he was an likable and intelligent talking head who seemed to have a real plan.
After the veep pick I now know that Ryan is not only a smart “man with a plan” but also tall, athletic and handsome with an adorable family. He makes Romney look better and better. He looks like a future president himself, actually.
The left thought they had the market cornered when it comes to having the most likable candidate. But now Romney has decided no more Mr. Nice Guy…he’s no longer saying that Obama is a pleasant guy who’s in over his head. He’s calling him out…telling him to go back where he came from, Chicago!

I was a 30 something father of 3 during the Reagan years and well remember how Reagan, the greatest president of my adult years, was treated by the east & west coast smarty pants. Before, during, and after office the MSM, elitist, democrat narrative was not only that Reagan was evil, but he was even more importantly flat out dumb as a rock. That was the narrative about GWB. Romney & Ryan have them fretting night and day because they know that narrative will not work this time around.
No one can pin the “dumb” label on Ryan or Romney like they persisted in calling Reagan and GWB. It won’t stick.
So I guess we’ll be hearing a lot about their supposed geeky policy wonkiness, as if that’s a bug instead of a feature. It’s always a feature if the candidate is a Dem…

I spend a lot of time (maybe too much) monitoring the leftosphere. I don’t see the fear y’all see.
The linked article spends a lot of pixels talking about people who are not Ryan. I sense the rightosphere is projecting too much into the man, not so different than what some did for Palin and others did for Obama.
If the R&R squad wants to run as heirs to Reagan, my guess is that the lefties would be delighted. Neither man has Reagan’s charisma, at least via TV. If y’all are correct, and the lefties can’t play the “dumb” card, the still have the race card, the class-warfare card, and the compassion card. The top R on the R ticket gets trumped by all of those.
On the horsey question, for example, Reagan rode on a ranch like a cowboy. Mrs Romney owns a fancy prancing horse. I know Mitt likes to ride in a more manly manner, but can he overcome the negs already built up against him? Will he look like John Kerry askin’ for his huntin’ license?
There are intellectual and logical reasons why the left *should* fear Ryan (if he is all that). But we agree the left’s power and appeal is not logical. It’s like having the best debater on the pep squad.
Reagan happened more than thirty years ago. A significant part of the electorate never experienced him. The same could be said for FDR (almost nobody alive experienced him). I’m not sure that appealing to dead personalities is a winning tactic. The lefties never talk about how FDR was a great speaker, they just like his programs and a soft-headed version of the ideals he claimed to stand for.
Scrolling down a couple of neo’s posts, temper my previous comment with a recognition that the leftosphere I monitor is not the mainstream democrats and liberals. The most mainstream source I use is CNN, and I might be the only person watching that channel.
Maybe I could replace “leftoshpere” with “Progosphere”. Paul Ryan doesn’t scare Bernie Sanders.
