The “Jewish vote” over the last century
While doing research for my recent post on Jews and Obama, I came across a site showing trends in Jewish voting in presidential elections from 1916 till now (I assume it’s based mostly on exit polling, although that’s not clearly stated).
The trends are easier to see if you look at this chart from the site:
So at the beginning of the century the Jewish vote was relatively evenly split between the two parties, at least as compared to today. The Roosevelt years saw the consolidation of the Jewish vote firmly and overwhelmingly in the camp of the Democratic Party. But it hasn’t always stayed there. The presidents who made the strongest inroads have been Eisenhower and Reagan, and Nixon in his second term but not his first, with a blip for Bush senior in his first term but not his second run.
I haven’t found any data to explain these things, although I bet someone has done a study somewhere. I’m not sure about the earlier part of the century, but the Eisenhower phenomenon could be accounted for by his WWII war hero status. For Nixon’s second term, his opponent McGovern was an especially weak one and Nixon’s victory a bona fide landslide, so Jews were probably part of that general trend. Jews liked Reagan to the tune of over 30% (in 1980, almost 40%), a level that approached their Republican support back in the early part of the century. That carried over to a certain extent when Bush I first ran for president, but by the time he ran again their allegiance was very firmly in Democrat Clinton’s camp.
Since then, there’s been almost no change in their very high level of support for the Democratic candidates. Jews voted 78% for Obama in 2008, which has been typical of their vote for Democratic candidates in recent years. The question is: will they be disaffected enough in 2012 to go for Romney in Reaganesque numbers? That would only require their reaching levels between 30 and 40 percent, because the last time the Jewish vote for a Republican presidential candidate was above 40% was back in 1920.
I gave this issue fleeting attention a few days ago before realizing what a small minority the Jews are in this country. Taking into account where the Jewish votes are concentrated (i.e., mostly in states that are already deep blue), it seems that Florida is about the only state where peeling off some of the Dems’ Jewish support could realistically make a difference in a presidential election.
Conrad: but if you’re a Democrat, if the Jews turn on you, it means something. They’re not exactly the canary in the mine, but something like that. Plus, in addition to counting in Florida, they tend to be big Democrat donors.
Odd isn’t, a people that prides itself on intellectual acumen would prefer an anti-semite like Carter, or anti-Israel red like Obama to a genuine friend. My hope that Jews could learn as well as an amoeba is fading. I’m going to have to return to the livestock model to predict trends in Jewish voting (arch Zionists and Israeli-Americans excluded of course, a knowledge of the middle east breeds realism) .
Nitpick: “at the beginning of the century” should read “at the beginning of the 20th century”, since we’re now well into the 21st.
Since we’ve both lived most of our lives in the old century, it still seems natural to say it the way you did.
The tide will turn as socialism collapses in the next few years and the left becomes seriously uncool. Do people change their thinking? Major political shifts are probably inter-generational not intra-generational (i.e., most people hold onto their views until they die). It’s the way the brain works!
Yep, you are probably right, Steve.
Sheep dap gree door fun grab.
To use Hussein’s favorite phrase, the children of Israel do “punch above their weight” in terms of cultural and intellectual influence, especially in academia and entertainment industries. So any disaffection would lessen the ardor for the usual Dim candidates.
Conrad,
“I gave this issue fleeting attention a few days ago before realizing what a small minority the Jews are in this country.”
I concur.
I hate this subject. Not telling the blog hostess what to do, but in general, I just wish there’d be a change of punching-bag after nearly 2000 years.
People who resent the idea of the Jews as the Chosen are so often guilty of making it a fact by according such importance to so small a nation.
Bob from Virginia,
“…a people that prides itself on intellectual acumen…”
I’ve heard this before, the theme of “Jews are supposed to be smart.” That’s a misconception: Jews are not supposed to be smart, they’re supposed to be God-fearing, the most steadfast believers in Him among all human beings; smartness is a by-product of that. As King David wrote: “The fear of HaShem is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do thereafter.” (Psalms 111:10)
ziontruth.
Deliberate misreading of another’s point is both transparent and not helpful.
In this context “supposed” means that’s what people think, not what some imposed duty is.
Clear, now?
Also, see Griffe de Lion on Ashkenazi and the IQ of about, iirc, .85 SD above avg.
Richard Aubrey,
“Deliberate misreading of another’s point is both transparent and not helpful.”
Deliberate though my reference was, I’m not sure it’s a misreading, and even if it is, even if Bob from Virginia doesn’t share that misconception, there are a lot of people who do, and threads about the Jewish vote in America inevitably drift to it at some point or other.
“Also, see Griffe de Lion on Ashkenazi and the IQ of about, iirc, .85 SD above avg.”
You can keep your articles of materialist faith and genetic determinism to yourself. I don’t believe in IQ, or in any connection between genetics and intelligence for that matter. You inherit physical characteristics such as eye color, height and tendency to obesity; intelligence, like temperament, is from the soul, and no amount of “studies” churned out by the upholders of the religion of materialism can ever change that.
There is free will and no room for the excuse of “X made me do it,” whether that X be “the Devil” or “my genes.”
anyone have a record of the jewish vote 1933 germany?
Hatred of Israel Brings the KKK and Democrats Back Together
since its too long i will just put in quotes, and you can then compare them to the facts i been putting forth that the origin of disparate impact idea was nazi germany and was used to make the Shoa possible, and the ShoaII has started years ago, and now is finally picking up the steam it needs as hateful lied to minorities become a majority and will vote social justice again and exterminate (which through duplicate policies they are already doing, and in violation of the 1948 accords!!!)
and given that today’s news covered a black man who is now wanted for randomly slashing the throat of a white man walking down the street!!!
not much different than the volk German cutting the throat of a jew who is proven to be cheating through disparate impact (then not needing to be imported and normalized by feminism!)
here is a quote from the article by the politician, and it shows as i said, THEY know what you dont know, and so THEY feel your an idiot!!!
In 2010 he complained to a reporter that Jews “only make up 20 percent of the population, but they’ve always walked these streets (in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights) as if they owned them, and acted as if they are the only ones in the community that matter.”
that was the neighborhood that the socialists who were running the highlander school got busted for bombing to make Jews and blacks hate each other. they been hating each other there ever since… (remember the poor boy run over and the attack on the Hasidim driver as if he purposefully ran him down)
more comments proving my case:
once social justice was on the table again
then it was a given that eventually they would be killing white scapegoats… that way, no one caould call them nazis easily.
people are stupid enough to think that if you excise the jews from the rest, and kill them thats nazi
but if you dont excise and kill them along with others, its ok…
no..
SHOAII has been going on for years, and unlike last century, the Jew loving protectors are also on the list for removal.
Artfldgr: here’s a site that purports to answer your question. I can’t vouch for the facts therein.
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. ~Buddha
Thanks neo for taking the time to find and link to that for me. but alas, there are no real figures. we all know that they did, because at that time, the acorn was not a tree, and when it showed itself more, it wasn’t to them yet. also given that the alternative choices were communism, that didn’t leave much for them to choose.
my curiosity is not to lambast them for not knowing what then they could not have… but to show how many good people will vote against their own interest if their reality has been constructed to avoid the key information they need to make good choices (ie, choices good for them, not choices good for the party, who could call their desires the good choices)
so sad…
thanks
Abilene paradox
The Abilene paradox is a paradox in which a group of people collectively decide on a course of action that is counter to the preferences of any of the individuals in the group.
It involves a common breakdown of group communication in which each member mistakenly believes that their own preferences are counter to the group’s and, therefore, does not raise objections. A common phrase relating to the Abilene paradox is a desire to not “rock the boat”.
ziontruth. Your belief in something is irrelevant to the question of whether it exists.
People do not think Jews are required (“supposed”) to be smart. People think Jews are smart. Their disproportionate representation among Nobel winners, scholars, professionals, etc, is not something for a group of average intelligence.
The issue of Jewish voting is precisely because they’re supposed to be smart. Blacks are kept in ghettos, artificially made ignorant by dem-run schools and race-baiting “leaders” in order to have them vote as blocs against their interest.
What’s the Jews’ reason? After all, they’re “supposed” to be smart–enough to know better.
While reviewing the voting trends of Jews over the years, we of course look at the candidates and try to determine what characteristics each had that attracted or repelled Jewish voters. But I think we also need to look at the characteristics of the group called “Jewish voters” as well to fully understand voting patterns.
Did the influx of immigrants in the early 1900’s include a significant number of Jews? (“significant” in that they statistically impacted the “Jewish voter” cohort).
If so where did they come from? Did they have a set of political beliefs that influenced Jewish voting patterns?
