Romney wins Illinois primary
It’s not a surprise at all, but Mitt Romney has won in Illinois. With 61% of precincts reporting, he’s got about 48% of the vote to Santorum’s 34%, Paul’s 9%, and Gingrich’s unimpressive 8%.
For some reason (maybe because Romney has led consistently in the polls by a substantial margin?) the Illinois race hasn’t drawn all that much interest compared to a lot of others. But you can talk about it here, if you care to—or anything else you want.
(from the backseat)
Are we there yet?
Strange as it is, I often listen to WGN radio in Chicago, even though I live in Israel (I’m a Milt Rosenberg fan). I thought it was interesting that yesterday the talk show host took calls from listeners during the day, who reported that the turnout seemed to be low, that in some polling places they were asked to show ID (!) although someone else pointed out that ID was NOT supposed to be required. What was more interesting was that in one area a couple of people reported problems with the ballots themselves and the machines that were supposed to read them. Seems like a good trial run for the November election.
Wasn’t there an article in the New Yorker a few years ago about the coming new voting machines and problems to be expected?
It’ll just be like Obama II, if Obama were to cut taxes, reform entitlements, and work with Republicans to approve their legislative agenda. It’s like they’re the same person.
A Romney win doesn’t draw much interest because it doesn’t serve The Narrative.
Romney got 42 delegates to Santorum’s 10 in Illinois.
If Santorum gets 11 out a possible 20 in Louisiana, that will “draw much interest”.
According to Dick Morris, if Romney hasn’t wrapped up the nomination by the end of June, Obama will be reelected.
The Narrative will be served as long as Santorum stays viable.
I voted for Newt. My parents, while they liked Newt, voted for Romney so Santorum would have less of a chance.
PA has a new voter ID law–voters will be required to show a photo ID come November. They will be asked for one in the April primary but need not show one to be allowed to vote. Of course it’s in the courts right now.
Last week Karl Rove showed the math. In order to win the nomination Romney needed to get 47% of all the remaining delegates. Santorum needed to get 67% and Newt 75%. In this primary Romney got 77% and Santorum 18.5% of the delegates.
The math is becoming hard to ignore, but both Rick and Newt are still ignoring it. Is it denial or do they still think that the South is gouing to pull it out for one of them?
J. J.: they think that they’ll get enough votes between them to deny Romney the number he needs to clinch it, and that they will wield influence at the convention, either to block him and lead to another nominee (perhaps themselves) or to get concessions from him (VP? platform? other promises?). They also are both out of office and don’t have too much else to do, and they are loving the bully pulpit and national attention.
By george, neo, I think you’re right.
Gingrich and Santorum are fast approaching dog in the manger status.
Sadly, it means very little. As Alifa pointed out above, turnout was low. Indeed, I heard the IL Sec of State or whoever heads up the election squad quoted that this was a record low turnout.
Romney started the campaign of Repub personal destruction, and this is likely the result….why bother to vote in the primary, since they’re all bums?
We are becoming Venezuelans. Discouragement leads to apathy.
ABO ( in my dreams!).
