[UPDATED] Scarlett O’Hara…
…is missing some tie-dyed sheets:
[ADDENDUM: Here’s a clip of a classic spoof of the scene in “Gone With the Wind” where Scarlett wears a dress she’s had made from her curtains. Carol Burnett is Scarlett, Vicki Lawrence Sissy, Dinah Shore Melaine, Harvey Corman a great Gable-esque Rhett, and Tim Conway is Ashley:
And here’s the original:
Leigh’s seamstress was considerably better than Burnett’s.]
That’s so awful.
I actually like it.
I don’t see tie-die, I see drops of ink slowly falling into clear liquid.
But the Best of Show was definitely Angelina Jolie.
The Go Fug Yourself crew calls it “full Movie Star I Could Kill You With A Bat Of My Eyelashes glam.”
dicentra: well, perhaps Scarlett spilled some ink on her sheets. In those days they used ink in their pens, didn’t they?
Hmmm, since you mentioned Scarlett O’Hara, I had to link to this: “I saw it in the window and I just couldn’t resist it.”
Darn, the link didn’t go through correctly,. Trying again: “I saw it in the window and I just couldn’t resist it.”
Wow! Was that a show last night or what?
Miss Scarlet would have fit right in, what with all those starlets showing up in dresses constructed from post modern curtains. And I’m sure she would have approved of all the awards that were handed out to the Help too.
FWIW, I think it’s great. Striking, without the Bjork “I’m wearing a swan” over-the-topness.
I like the cut and fit … but I just don’t know about the material – it does look too much like tye-dyed sheets to me, too. Maybe in a dark color with a jeweled or metallic net overlay on the bodice and upper skirt layer.
Kurt: I’ve always loved that bit. Saw the original when it first aired. I think I’ll add a YouTube clip of it to the post.
The Rorschach dress. I kinda like it.
I like it quite a bit. I just wish it were more modest. *shrug*
That’s my all-time favorite Carol Burnett sketch!
Makes me wish I could find that show in reruns.
Hilarious, good clean fun! (Something that’s in very short supply these days).
Dress? what dress? What a pretty girl… I wouldn’t know her if you told me her name, but I know what I like to look at.
And I have to disagree with dicentra about Angelina. The huge elbow joints accentuated by scrawny arm muscles remind me of pictures of concentration camp survivors. Anorexia has no appeal to me.
It’s Sarah Michelle Geller (Buffy the Vampire). Her little daughter picked out the dress. I laughed at your description of it, and at the same time I think it’s fine.
I loved the Carol Burnett routine when I saw it a long time ago. It still sticks in the mind. Sid Caesar, Steve Allen, Bob Newhart, Red Skelton, Imogene Coca, Carol Burnett, Jackie Gleason, and all the people who were standard on their shows, were brilliant at being hilarious without overt ugliness. I still laugh at remembered skits.
Thanks for a cheerful respite from the serious business of living in this ever-maddening world.
