Publicizing Bin Laden’s killing
A new book has come out by former Navy SEAL Chuck Pfarrer, detailing the killing of Bin Laden and alleging that many former accounts got it wrong.
I have no way of knowing whether Pfarrer is correct—he says that Bin Laden was killed much earlier than usually reported, within 90 seconds of the SEALS’ arrival at the compound and while reaching for a rifle. But the following caught my eye and I suspect the charge is likely to be true:
President Obama stepped up to a podium in the East Room of the White House that night to announce bin Laden’s death. That rapid announcement, explained Pfarrer, posed a major threat to U.S. national security.
“There was a choice that night,” Pfarrer told TheDC. “There was a choice to keep the mission secret.” America, Pfarrer explained, could have left things alone for “weeks or months ”¦ even though there was evidence left on the ground there ”¦ and use the intelligence and finish off al-Qaida.”
But Obama’s announcement, he said, “rendered moot all of the intelligence that was gathered from the nexus of al-Qaida. The computer drives, the hard drives, the videocasettes, the CDs, the thumb drives, everything. Before that could even be looked through, the political decision was made to take credit for the operation.”

Promethea is right. The man truly is a dolt, unless Soros for some nefarious reason actually ordered Obama to do this. (I have no doubt that Obama is an agent, not a principal.) More likely, Obama did it off his own bat. It has all the hallmarks – self-aggrandizement, and staggering stupidity – of an Obama Presents. Much like the “corpsman,” “Austrian,” “the police acted stupidly,” and “inflating your tires” gaffes, this one must make Soros wonder if he has to tell this clown absolutely everything. Short answer, George: yes, you do.
At the very least an act of ignorance that cannot be attributed to merely being an amateur, more like a character flaw. It was clear at the time he announced that if an intelligence trove had been harvested that he was rendering it obsolete by revealing its acquisition. Any PFC just out of AIT could have told him to shut up. That has been the normal SOP for actionable intelligence for the last 5,000 years. Furthermore counter-insurgencies are intelligence wars, inadequate intelligence=you lose. Ideally the compound and everyone one in it would have been blown to smithereens so that no one could know what was found or taken. Even if it did become generally known not all the bad guys would have been informed in time nor would they been able to surmise that their positions may have been compromised.
Combine this with trying to use Pakistani Intelligence to negotiate with the Haqqani network, giving a date for withdrawal of surge troops in Afghanistan, not negotiating a SOFA agreement with Iraq in time to prevent a total troop withdraw and then bragging about it I figure Obama is either the worse military leader in history or is trying to redeem Benedict Arnold’s reputation as biggest traitor. But hey, he still has over 44% job approval.
I wonder what will be the first thing he will do after re-election; perhaps release Kalid Sheik Mohammed as a good will gesture.

Bob, because I think he has neither the intelligence nor the force of character to get as far as he has on his own. His effortless ascent (skates into and through Columbia and Harvard Law, gets offered a lucrative book contract, screws it up, then gets another, when he churns out a stylish book, as a twenty-something is offered a high profile position handing out $100 MM, goes to the state legislature where he is allowed to duck contentious issues and to share credit for bills others wrote, has his political rivals mysteriously cheap-shotted, drifts into the Senate, backs into the Presidency …) bespeaks
some heavy duty downfield blocking for him. No one legitimately has a life like that. No one. His life story is as improbable as that of Harry Flashman in a Flashman novel, or Dustin Hoffman’s character in Little Big Man (or, for that matter, and perhaps more appropriately, Forrest Gump).
And yet, despite all of his success, and all of his accolades, in terms of native ability he clearly is pretty much a cipher, a born manager of a Target branch that will soon be struggling under his feeble management.
Conclusion: he’s a spokesmodel, and a none-too-bright one, either, for one or more principals. Look at how badly he handles himself off the teleprompter, and at how poor a politician he is (even Dems are muttering this now, apparently). No way he got where he is on his own. He’s basically politics’ answer to Milli Vanilli or The Monkees – a triumph of the marketer’s art. Others, with considerably more intelligence and steelier character, have cast him in this role, I suspect.

I started Dreams of My Father several years ago, but read only about 60 pages. I recently bought the book at a used book store for $1 and have begun reading it again. This time I will most likely finish.
Some observations. In some places the writing is incredibly good, poetic and filled with insight. It doesn’t ring true with someone who, when off the teleprompter, speaks Austrian in all 57 states in the process of claiming that inflating tires will make up for greatly restricting drilling for oil and gas in the US. Such as the doltish things Obama has done in foreign policy- stating a withdrawal time for Afghanistan, and announcing Bin Laden’s death before we could act on the data captured in the raid and surprise some people.
You can almost predict what Obama is going to say. Blame Bush. Republicans are destroying the country. The rich are stealing from you and me – with the implied exception , of course, of the rich who are Obama supporters. They get dispensations for supporting the POTUS. If Obama were that good a writer he could come up with something different to say. Instead, he just repeats the same of drivel he has been spewing for the last 4 years.

If Billy Boy Ayers was the ghost writer/editor, would he have included this line, which is a jab at the likes of failed Commie Billy Boy, who lives on the fringe of a campus area and also is a retired professor. OTOH, Billy Boy could have put that in to throw people off.
But why? Why would a state senator from Illinois need to do this? I can understand the need to have an old flame anonymous, especially if she were married to someone else, but to hide the names of those involved in community organizing in Chicago, for example? What is the need for privacy in hiding the names he was involved with in community organizing in Chicago? The definitely sounds like a Billy Boy addition. Billy Boy certainly had experience in covering his tracks. Cover tracks so one cannot investigate the veracity of the narrative.
How would someone teaching English at the Embassy know about that: “Even the smart guys at the Agency had lost count.” The other part about the CIA simply be attributed to street rumors in Jakarta. But the “lost count?” That passage lends support to the speculations that there was a CIA connection to his mother and perhaps his grandparents.
There is a passage where Obama Sr. speaks to Obama Jr.’s fifth grade class. There is a lot of detail about what Obama Sr. said to the class. I doubt that Obama Jr. remembered his father’s talk in that detail. Who invented the details? Perhaps Obama Jr. did. But the details of the Obama Sr. talk to the class sounded a lot like lefty talking points, something Billy Boy is quite practiced in.
Occam, I noted before the similarity between Obama and The Amazing Mr. Ripley. But I’d call him an Outliner as in Malcolm Galdwell’s book rather than a tool of malicious conspirators, mainly because no conspiracy could be so elaborate. Rather, a pompous man came on the scene when an immature people wanted an easy American Idol answer. He knew how to use people and he was lucky to find people who wanted to be used. History is full of such idiots on white horses but they are created by masses of idiots who believe in them. Look at Hitler, an amazing neurotic guttersnipe that came on the scene at just the right time. All in all I prefer to see neither Obama nor his enablers as Svengalis, rather the 2008 American electorate as a bunch of morons. No conspiracy needed in that case, just a sad commentary on our time. Note: a history of our time could be entitled “A Time of Minnows”
Bob, I’d like to believe that you’re right, but the con man scenario doesn’t account for his life story all that well.
To subscribe to that scenario, one has to believe that Obama inexplicably bounced between Red hot spots (Occidental to Columbia), then by coincidence lived near Ayers in NYC (and worked with him on the anti-apartheid campaign, but didn’t know him – ha!) and Chicago, where Ayers got him on the board of the Annenberg Challenge, and where Ayers’ wife introduced him to Michelle, etc. Somehow he – who’d never published a jot – was offered a book contract and an advance, something authors sacrifice their first-born to get. Then, after failing to deliver, he’s subsequently offered a second book contract and advance. Hard-left types abound in his life story; how many of us have actually known a hard-left type? (OK, I spoke with one on several occasions, but don’t actually know her.) Yet many of the dramatis personae in Obama’s life story are extreme left-wing activists (Ayers, Dohrn, Wright, Van Jones) or are/were frank (sorry) CPUSA members (Frank Marshall Davis). Even his mom was by all accounts a fellow traveler.
Sorry, too many funky coincidences. (I have a friend who I’ve played tag with from Berkeley to Europe and now back to SoCal, but that’s because we’re in the same field. Which is kinda my point. There is a connection between at least some of these events; otherwise his life story reads like someone hitting the lottery every day for a week.)
So apply Occam’s Razor. A simpler explanation is Obama identified (by Davis) as a comer and moving up through a Red farm system. One assumption, and now it all makes perfect sense. Whitaker Chambers in Witness detailed how the Reds used to, and presumably still do, operate: swinging opportunities, honors, and accolades to other Reds to advance the cause. For example, arranging a book contract? Think there’s a Red sympathizer or two in publishing? I do.
If the Red network scenario seems too far into tinfoil hat territory, consider this: how did Ayers and other Weathermen stay underground for so long?

Mix in the lefty dominance of the Democratic Party since 1968 and I see where you are coming from. BTW our respective interpretations of Obama’s nearly inexplicable success are not contradictory.

Absolutely. Consider the French Resistance, which was almost entirely composed of the French Communist Party (self-edifying revisionist histories notwithstanding). Why? Because the French Communist Party was accustomed to operating as a clandestine network, and had long had a cell structure with tight security. All they had to do was redirect their efforts from undermining the French government to undermining the Nazi occupation. Easy. Didn’t even require a change of letterhead. /g

As a historical example, consider how quickly leftists pivoted on a dime at the time of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact. As a contemporary example, consider JournoList. The only reason we found out about it was the ease of promulgating electronic communications. Absent emails, we probably never would have found out about it. And all those JournoListers would still be beavering away unseen and unknown, manipulating the news to undermine our way of life and advance imposition of their dream.
Is it therefore farfetched to postulate a JournoList-type cabal pulling strings to advance Obama’s political career? I don’t think so.

Obamacare — Attempting to federalize local state rights, extending federal control over massive components of the national bourse, extending federal control over individuals’ lives in violation of the Constitution’s Commerce Clause. Cynically lining up supporters in white doctors’ robes, while refusing to consult with much more prominent and predominant medical groups who oppose. Lying about the program’s cost and tax burden by subterfuging it with exorbitant taxes that begin several years into its anticipated roll-out. 26. Lies, Lies, Lies. The regular use of straw-man demonizations to try winning support for his unpopular legislation, like accusing doctors of performing unnecessary surgery so that they can enrich themselves by imposing misery on their patients.
27. Throwing his grandmother under the bus. Using his grandmother as a foil to win points, calling her a racist like “typical white people.”

40. Napolitano out of touch. The shameful failure of Obama’s Homeland Security chief, Janet Napolitano, to appreciate the Obama Administration’s security failures in the face of the near-catastrophe of the “underwear bomber” in the skies over Detroit, as she insisted “the system worked.”
41. Student loans. Government takeover of the student loan program
42. Border security. Cancellation of the “virtual border fence” project with no replacement, while deploying National Guard troops to do paper work at desk jobs and provide office assistance rather than stand armed along the border.
43. The “Beer Summit.” In the aftermath of wrongly castigating and erroneously pre-judging fault regarding the Cambridge Police Department, tying up the country with a foolish spectacle on the White House lawn.
44. Immigration and Arizona. The Department of Justice’s attack on Arizona for that state’s exercise of its sovereign legislative authority on the issue of citizen identification rules. Failure of his own federal government to execute the law on immigration.
45. The attack on Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Attacking the Wisconsin governor and his state legislature for exercising their sovereign legislative authority on public employment issues, while Obama failed to acknowledge that the new Wisconsin rules are comparable to those that always have applied to federal employees.

The arrogant temerity to tell Americans, God-like, that history will record his coronation as the moment that the rivers stopped rising and the planet healed.

60. Failure to lead on immigration. Not confronting the immigration issue when he dominantly controlled both the House and a filibuster-proof Senate, then mocking the GOP on immigration, saying they would not be happy with “alligators and moats” — when all they want is secure borders.
61. Fiscal irresponsibility on foreign relations with Egypt. Forgiving billions of dollars in Egyptian and related Mideast debt when we are past the 14.3 trillion debt line.
62. Wasting billions on corrupt “Palestine” agencies. Pumping billions more into the discredited United Nations Relief & Works Agency (UNRWA) and the Palestinian Authority that merged with the terrorist Hamas.
63. Radical judicial appointments. Nominating a radical leftist, Professor Goodwin Liu, for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit despite Liu’s contempt for constitutional imperatives towards limited government.
64. Acceding to political bribery by cherry-picking waivers to Obamacare for favored donors. Forcing Obamacare down the throats of small businesses across America that cannot afford it . . . then approving politically correct and electoral pay-off waivers for his friends, donors, and rich boutique businesses. Granting 20% of all the country’s Obamacare waivers in Pelosi’s San Francisco district. Buying off votes from Ben Nelson of Nebraska (the Cornhusker Deal), Mary Landrieu (the Louisiana Purchase) to pass Obamacare.
65. Using the White House to crush political opposition. Trying to force donors to his political opponents to reveal their contributions. Using the White House official website asking supporters to report to the Government instances of people criticizing Government policies.
66. Attempting to crush media opposition. Punishing a Boston newspaper whose editorial attacked him, having his White House conduct a war against Fox News, claiming they are an entertainment, not a news organization, and then boycotting Fox until that strategy backfired.
67. Encouraging cultural decline. Inviting “Common,” a “poet” with disgusting lyrics of hate, to entertain at the White House
68. The Louis XVI Factor. Vacations and high-profile golf during the Gulf oil crisis, prompting even Democrat strategist and Presidential advisor James Carville to erupt in fury. More high-profile golf at Cape Cod while the country was losing its AAA credit rating for the first time.
69. The Marie Antoinette Factor. Michelle high-profile huge trips abroad, a la Eva Peron, with family friends and their children partying on the public payroll, at 5-star hotels in places like Spain.
70. Al Sharpton. Launching his national presidential reelection campaign with a speech to Al Sharpton’s base.
71. Secrecy in Legislation. Failing to honor his pledge to conduct transparent governance, crafting Obamacare with Democrats behind closed doors barred to Republicans, leaving Obamacare as a massive document so convoluted that Nancy Pelosi had to tell the media: “But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”
72. A philosophy of redistributing other people’s money. Trying to persuade “Joe the Plumber” that it is a beneficial national economic goal to “redistribute the wealth.”
73. Cynically blaming Republicans and Talk Radio for the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Blaming their rhetoric, while failing to address Democrat use of vile and violent language to describe Republicans and the Tea Party.
74. Lying about a family connection to the Holocaust. Lying and falsely telling Americans that his grandfather was among those who liberated Auschwitz when, in fact, no American troops liberated Auschwitz.
75. Failing to grasp the Israel narrative. Describing Israel’s right to exist as premised on the Holocaust, thus missing the entire point of a Jewish country built on the land where Jews have lived since Biblical times.
76. Lying about a family connection to the Civil Rights movement. Telling Americans that his birth happened because his parents became amorous as a result of the 1965 Selma Civil Rights March — even though he was born in 1961.
77. Collapse of the housing market. American housing prices lowest since 2002.
78. Manipulating legislation by forcing votes on massive documents. Racing massive thousand-page legislation packages through Congress without allowing Congress or the American People time to read, comprehend, and absorb the bill — and thus breaking a major campaign promise.
79. The Credit Rating downgrade. Presiding over the first credit-rating downgrade in American history.
80. Timing military campaigns to coincide with election campaigns. Manipulating and sacrificing the lives of American soldiers, basing a withdrawal from Afghanistan not on strategic national security considerations but timed instead to coincide with the start of the 2012 Democrat Presidential Convention.
81. NLRB. Stacking the National Labor Relations Board with left-focused political hacks who are attempting to prevent America’s leading exporter, Boeing, from building a $1 billion manufacturing plant in South Carolina because that state permits employment of non-union labor.
82. Cynically manipulating the national Strategic Oil Reserve. Releasing 30 million barrels of oil from the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve in order to obtain the temporary political goal of lowering gasoline prices that have skyrocketed in the face of his severe restrictions on permitting exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, along the Atlantic coast, and in Alaska in his obsessive pursuit of “green jobs.”
83. “Operation Fast and Furious” debacle. Allowing Mexican drug lords to access illegal firearms, then losing track of the firearms while the drug cartels used the illegal firearms for crime including murdering Americans.
84. Lying, lying, and more lying to voters. Trying to create class warfare by telling people that Republicans’ refusal to raise taxes will cause youngsters to be unable to finance their college educations, while causing seniors to lose health care and social security payments. Failing to admit honestly that Congress extended the Bush tax cuts and refused to increase taxes even when Democrats had a filibuster-proof Senate and veto-proof control of both Congressional chambers.
85. Investigating CIA patriots. The Holder investigation into CIA operatives’ interrogations of suspected Al Qaeda terrorists and their use of methods that had been approved in advance by the Justice Department.
