Funny quote from MoDo
Now whenever I read Maureen Dowd (which is as seldom as possible, although every now and then I succumb) I will be thinking of this nicely devastating put-down by Andrew Ferguson, who was describing her piece on Cheney’s memoir:
Her column might have been written by an upset high schooler, so vast was her rage, so limited was her ability to express it.
“Upset high schooler” pretty much covers it for all of Ms. Dowd’s columns, although perhaps middle schooler would be more appropriate.
And now Dowd takes on Chris Christie’s non-candidacy announcement in her usual unserious and noninsightful manner:
It’s not the puffed up body that’s off-putting. It’s the puffed up ego.
It’s also unintentionally funny; is she really criticizing Christie for being an egomaniac, and ignoring Obama’s proclivities in that direction? Plus, in the very same column she manages to make this risible statement:
Americans who have been hurt want to identify the villains, and Obama is loath to target villains.
Christie can be a bully, but that may seem better than the alternative: a president who lets himself be bullied, and who lets the bullies run wild.
Poor pitiful nice-guy gentleman Obama, so loath to point fingers at those who are out to get him.
“Americans who have been hurt want to identify the villains, and Obama is loath to target villains.”
Besides
1) GW Bush
2) US Chamber of Commerce
3) Surgeons who cut off people’s limbs for extra cash
4) the Tea Party
5) rich folk who don’t pay their fair share
6) the likud
C’mon folks, lets all think of few villains Obama has been loath to target.
Ms Dowd is the middleschool meangirl who has always thought she was the smartest, most clever, most urbane person in the room. Her audience, those who like her I should say, is the snarky insecure who go along because they fear her spewing poison.
Neo reads the NYT so we don’t have to. It’s a dirty job.
Greece has come to the USA. Drudge reports 50% of us are getting entitlement checks (I did not read the story). Meanwhile the Wall Street “protestors” are gathering support from unions and academics. One “protestor” complains about “Unforgivable(!) student debt and rising tuition.” What that has to do with Wall Street eludes me.

“Upset high schooler” is dead on. MoDo always seem to project the tone of an insecure semi-popular high school girl who’s just learned that her subject has refused to sign her yearbook.
She hath a rather puffed-up ego, herself.
best was when she pondered as to why she has no mate… given the way other feminist icons and giants have treated their mates, and so on… having a mate is more a question… except to her…
An Ideal Husband

[the whole article is about the guy you select… not about how the women act, after all, they are perfect and so could never look to themselves for any sort of responsiblity – ie, dowd aint responsible]
Maureen Dowd: ‘Where Is My Jewish Husband?’
By Tom Tugend (JTA)
yeah.. THATs a great message to put in the wailing wall with the others…
Unless she’s offering to wear a Scolds Bridal aint no way anyone wants to bet turned to stone and run down… (and it WILL happen given her)
besides… she is there for the women to read and listen to.. if you think you dont read her much, the men read her less… but she has a HUGE feminist following.
ergo her always towing the party line…
(no hats, no ice cream, not that kind of party – though there are a few clowns)
here is her with her head in the feminist bowl with others going la la la…

Reminds me that she is the daughter of Thaumas and Electra and sister of Iris… who would want to be her Phineas?
Yes, a great description of Dowd! The only time I read Dowd is when one of my favorite writers refers to her. (I blame you and the Anchoress, neoneocon!) She strikes me as someone who might be charming in person, in miniscule doses – say, happy hour after work or a cocktail party with 10 normal guests for a break between incoherent rants.
Upperclass feminists always got my goat with their out-of-touch soundbytes like “marriage is a comfortable concentration camp.” However, Dowd barely even aspires to pseudo-feminism. She’s like a cross between Auntie Mame and a well-past-her-prime maneater. Artfldgr’s quote is a perfect example of her rambling from one overgeneralization to another, with a smattering of name-dropping (Felix Dennis) to lend an air of authenticity. After reading the entire column, I can’t discover the point – unless the point is that she gets paid to keep herself in booze and Bozo-the-Clown hairdye.
