The other day I was talking with friend, comparing the present feeling of unrest to the turmoil of the late 60s. We agreed that both times were tumultuous, but she thought things were worse now. I said I wasn’t sure; maybe they were just different. Remember the assassinations and the cities burning with riots and racial tension? Much of the time it seemed like a major conflagration was imminent, although this turned out to not be true.
As you might imagine, we never resolved the issue. But I thought of the conversation again when I read about the riots in London.
Everyone is trying to figure them out. Are they racially-inspired, class-inspired, or just an eclectic bunch of destructive and marauding youths having a fine old time?
The rioters aren’t telling. The original riots began as an outgrowth of peaceful protests in Tottenham, a neighborhood in which 29-year-old Mark Duggan had been killed by police, but they escalated to seemingly random violence in Tottenham and many other areas around the city, in a bunch of copycat actions that appear to have been helped by coordination through social media.
But the fact that no one knows why this is happening doesn’t stop the left from analyzing the psyches of the rioters and telling us what’s really bothering them. Mary Riddell, for example, says it’s not a race thing:
The second alleged culprit is ethnicity. But, as David Lammy, Tottenham’s MP, has said, these are no race riots. The Eighties uprisings at Broadwater Farm, as in Toxteth and Brixton, were products, in part, of a poisonous racism absent in today’s Tottenham, where the Chinese grocery, the Turkish store and the African hairdresser’s sit side by side.
Perhaps that’s true; many have pointed out the diverse nature of the neighborhoods involved and of the rioters, although this writer draws attention to a history of racial unrest among Tottenham’s “Afro-Caribbean population.” Like many on the left, Riddell is blaming income inequality; the following statement—especially the phrase “creamed off”—expresses her assumption (typically shared by the left) that income is a zero sum game:
In the bubble of the 1920s, the top 5 per cent of earners creamed off one-third of personal income. Today, Britain is less equal, in wages, wealth and life chances, than at any time since then
Then there’s this by Nina Power, who mentions “the division between the entitled and the dispossessed.” “Dispossessed,” of course, implies that members of the underclass have had what should have rightfully been theirs confiscated by others. Her solution: Britain isn’t leftist enough; more income redistribution is needed.
Of course, as is so often the case with urban riots, the perpetrators aren’t doing what you think they’d do if Power’s thesis (protesting income inequality) were correct—although I suppose that stealing and looting is a crude form of income redistribution. But these “youths” are burning their own neighborhoods, which is so often the modus operandi for riots.
To many, these riots appear to be an expression of nothing more or less than lawlessness and mob vandalism. Labour MP Diane Abbott—who happens to be black, and who therefore might have more dispensation to tell the truth—called it this way:
Cuts don’t turn you into a thief. What we saw was people thieving for hours. Mr Umunna [another black Labour MP] said the violence in London was “totally opportunistic and utterly unacceptable.”
Although opportunistic, the rioters are quite organized all the same, getting in touch with each other by Blackberry and Twitter, and wearing masks to protect themselves from being identified later:
A…tweet said “come we go rob Mare Street Primark” while another said: “JD Spots [sic] Mare Street giving away tracksuits. Help your self..”
One user of the microblogging site wrote: “Chaos on Mare Street: police stand by doing nothing, whilst ”˜protesters’ steal from local shops. You should both be ashamed of yourselves.”
It’s not clear whether those police standing by are armed or not; some London police do bear arms, as the original provocation of the Duggan shooting demonstrates. But although firing on a crowd would be a shocking and extreme act (although some people in the comments section of British newspapers are angry enough at what’s occurring to advocate it), what’s wrong with tear gas or other similar crowd control techniques?
This article describes the police as powerless and outnumbered:
Many of the areas targeted last night seemed to have little police presence. But the violence and looting thrived even where riot officers were deployed as police appeared largely outnumbered and powerless to act…
Residents accused the police of abandoning them. Matthew Yeoland, 43, a teacher from Peckham, where property was set ablaze, said: “It’s like a war zone and the police weren’t doing anything. There were too many people and not enough police.”
The riots are so widespread that the police seem overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. Whether their hands are also tied by policy restrictions, or inadequate training, or both, is unclear from reports I’ve read. What is clear is that their response has failed to get the violence under any sort of control, and that law-abiding citizens are furious:
Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, heard during a visit to Tottenham that locals felt police had deserted them. “There was nobody there to protect us,” one resident told him…
Police have already admitted that they had no choice but to allow looters to steal from high street shops on Saturday evening as they had to focus their attention on the dozens of burning buildings and rioting in Tottenham.
Former Met commanders said the riots were unprecedented in their sporadic and spontaneous nature.
Brian Paddick, the former deputy assistant police commissioner who was a sergeant during the Brixton riots in the 1980s said: “We have not faced this situation before.”
The general sense is of thing falling apart, the center not holding. I’m quoting the poem “The Second Coming” by Yeats, which I’ve quoted many times before here. It seems especially apropos now, so here’s the whole thing—again:

As somebody said of this, the cops are aware that nobody higher has their backs. Anything happens to a rioter and a cop is in bad, bad trouble. Which they know.
They won’t get into trouble letting stuff happen, which they also know.

I’m not always a fan of Ann Coulter, sometimes I think she says things just because they will aren’t PC.
But Ann’s latest book talks about exactly what is happening in London right now. The title is a little misleading; (it’s called “Demonic”) the book is about mob-mentality and why they behave as they do- and why it’s so dangerous to give in to the whims of a mob. It’s actually a very well thought out and intelligent essay, I thought. With recent events, I find it even more (frightfully so) relevant.
The only thing that surprise me about this, is why anyone would be surprised. People post a kick me sign on their asses and then gasp in wonder when they get kicked.
I’m tempted to laugh. But there is probably some person beaten senseless who is not a Labor voter, so I won’t.
The movie Harry Brown predicted this. When you watch the riot at the end of that movie and compare the real riot scenes on TV the past few days, the resemblance is uncanny (even the cinematography looks the same).
I’ve spent some time in London myself, and I can confirm that there are huge swaths of that city that are almost unimaginably horrible. I’m thinking in particular of places in East London like so-called “murder mile” in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, and Hounslow.
It’s not just the crime rates and the hideously ugly, brutalist aesthetic, in which of course London’s ghettos differ little from our own, but rather a more immeasurable quality of an atmosphere thick with evil. Charles Dickens once called Pittsburgh “hell with the lid lifted.” Today Dickens could have just stayed home to see that. Harry Brown gives a remarkably accurate picture of what it’s like.
Theodore Dalrymple, as all of us here who read him know, has been explaining for years that Britain is the most socially rotten country in Western Europe, and London its most rotten city. For what it’s worth, my brother, who has spent a significant amount of time in over a dozen third world countries, has told me that he only felt true fear in two places: Managua and East London.
Surely there’s a lot of subjectivity in these judgments, and I only mention them because as I watched the clips of the riots I was reminded of these hellholes, through which I once strolled (with pep in my step), and my spine turned to ice.
God help that place. The motives of the rioters have nothing to do with the leftist bromides neo cites. Britain has a number of characteristics which make these riots different than they would be here. The official “school leaving age” is 16 at which point you are out with not much to do. More academically oriented youth can test into more high school. This means there are lots of very young people with lots of energy and little constructive to do. The 18 year old drinking age soon fills that vacuum.
Britain has also long had the soccer hooligan who travels in bands and enjoys a good punch up. They tend to live in old working class neighborhoods and are readily available for excitement. These guys would not pass up a good riot.
On the plus side there aren’t a lot of guns among the police and the hooligans. Big time drug dealers and gangsters have guns, but the hooligans don’t. Riots of the scale we are seeing in Britain in the U.S. would involve lots of shooting.
Another situation that is very different is the absence of hand guns among the general population. Even without guns self defense has been largely outlawed. If someone breaks into your house to steal things, and you clobber them with a cricket bat, you could be charged with assault. This means that the merchants and residents of the riot areas are at the mercy of the rioters.

A few thoughts:
Thins have been fulminating under the surface and occasionally erupting into view on the Continent and in the UK for several years now, and it may be that the social structure in the UK and especially in England may have been so damaged/weakened, self-defense has been so discouraged and riminalized, the general population so thoroughly disarmed, and the police so emasculated, that it is possible–especially in the face of the government’s refusal to use real force against the rioters–for general social collapse, anarchy, and generalized civil war to occur.
I was wondering when someone would mention “The Coming Insurrection”
I note that the sale of aluminum baseball bats has shot up 6,000% on Amazon.UK. If you are determined, you can do a lot of damage with a baseball bat, and I assume that if enough rioters get beaten up by homeowners, the sheer number of prosecutions the could be involved may mean that homeowners/business owners who resorted to self defense may escape punishment.
I forget which high British official it was but, they were quoted yesterday? as saying that they were reluctant to use any real force against the rioters, just at the moment, of course, when these riots and rioters need to be put down hard.
I would like to see an ethnic/religious breakdown of the rioters, which I believe would be very instructive.
I expect that, if things are allowed to escalate out of control, it will eventually come to “a whiff of grapeshot” moment for the existing government, and if it doesn’t have the stomach to use lethal force, I expect the present government to disintegrate, for there to be general societal collapse, with civil war, and anarchy, and for several groups–including Muslims, and whoever is likely behind the rioters–to then contend for power.

Unless the British law enforcement organizations grow a pair, and begin shooting more than rubber bullets at the looters, in defense of honest, property-owning citizens and businesses, this will escalate. It will become very bad. The hoodies and the looters will grow bolder and bolder, in the immediate absence of any effective response . . . I am mildly surprised that there are as few human casualties as have been reported, so far. We will know things have really gone pear-shaped when we start hearing reports of sexual assaults.

Contrary to France, the UK ‘as plenty of ethnic English, Scots and Welsh – native Christians and Caucasians – who would be more than happy to run amuck. Witness the soccer hooligans. From what I have read, there have been a fair amount of blacks rioting but not Muslims. Some Muslim storekeepers have defended themselves, to their credit.

There is a simple and effective method to stop the riots: allow police to fire and kill on sight everybody engaged in any kind of violence and vandalism. Add to the mix public execution of troublemakers and deportation of some immigrants, and there would be calm.
Sergey, unfortunately, the UK is well beyond such common sense approaches. This is the country that prosecutes homeowners for defending themselves against someone who breaks into their homes.
Get on google maps and you can see street view of practically all of these places in London. Talk about a claustrophobic place. Their recycle bins have to be bigger than their bed rooms.
You may not be interested in the costs of real social welfare, but the costs of real social welfare are interested in you!
If you cut lots of social programs you better be willing to pay for more police and prisons.
And as fixing something is almost always more expensive than preventing it, conservatives actually don’t seem to have much of a brain for the actual costs of neglect while they pinch pennies sparing their tax money from going to the unwashed and undeserving.

The problem with a lot of social welfare programs is that they do not provide incentives for responsible behavior. Dalrymple in the UK has written several books on the relation between the growth of the underclass in the UK and the social welfare programs that enabled the dysfunctional behavior of the underclass.
In the US, the increase in social welfare programs in the 1960s went hand in hand with the exponential increase in illegitimate births. To a degree the increase in social welfare programs encouraged the increase in illegitimate births, for at least two reasons: 1) the parties involved knew that the government would pick up the tab for their irresponsible behavior, so there was no incentive for them to behave responsibly; 2) welfare was quite often cut off when there was a man in the household.
Two parent families do much better than one parent families in raising children who do not become criminals.
To the degree that social welfare programs have encouraged and/or enabled the growth of single parent families, they have increased crime.
There’s no point in trying to argue with “Reagan.” I’ve got a better idea.

These ‘flash mobs’ are cropping up in Chicago, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and elsewhere. Nothing near the scale of what is happening in the UK (yet) but disturbing nonetheless. As the economy goes into stall and then turns negative GDP we can expect increased violence from the inner city rabble rousers. I’m glad I live hundreds of miles from any metro area. Flyover country is a great place to be.
Not that we didn’t know it, but Britain is done:

When they took away the British right to self defense in their own homes they were basically saying the government is on the side of criminals.

Read in one article that 400 or so “asians” had run off 100 to 150 looters. “Asian” in the British press is often code speak for Muslims.

I presume that, with all the violence, a lot of ordinary, peaceful civilians are getting injured, and likely some of them killed.
I have yet to see totals (and I am sure that the British government doesn’t want them known) for the number of those killed so far except for one mention of three deaths of civilians as a result of rioting in Birmingham.
