Meanwhile…
…back in the real world, Hezbollah marches on.
Here’s another article on the subject. And since we can’t seem to get away from the phrase “blood libel,” it would seem to be an exceedingly appropriate term to describe this accusation towards Israel made by Hezbollah leader Nasrallah:
In a speech that was broadcast in full by Al-Jazeera, [Nasrallah] set out to argue that Israel was behind the [2005] Rafik Hariri assassination. He presented video footage and apparently intercepted Israeli military communications, all of which captured wide Arab audiences. His starting point was something that many, maybe even most Arabs believe: that Israel is behind many of the events that intensify conflict and sectarianism in Arab and Muslim countries. Arabs are nothing if not open to this interpretation. His challenge was to present evidence that Israel was specifically behind the Hariri assassination. And while he presented little that can stand up in a court of law, he managed to convey enough doubt that, coupled with the Arab instinct to see Israel’s hand in every Arab problem, gives him some protection and a basis for argument when the tribunal releases its findings.
The UN tribunal investigating the assassination will probably end up implicating Hezbollah, but Nasrallah knows that won’t sit well with what used to be called the Arab Street. What to do? When in doubt, blame the Israelis.
If Israel really wanted to screw things up for Nasrallah, they could say he’s an important player in the peace process. Then let his supporters tear him to shreds…
Perhaps there is more significant news from Tunisia, where a dictator was just throw out by street demonstrators. This could be big. A successful street revolution ending in democracy could reinvigorate a democratic movement lately disheartened by the indifference of the Obama administration.
Since 2003 and the invasion of Iraq there have now been democratic upheavals in Lebanon, Iran and now Tunisia. George W. Bush, aka the worst president in US history, may have given the ball just the push it needed.
As for Hezbollah, when the Iranian regime falls they become a joke. They are an episode not a condition.
Bob,
Don’t forget also that Hezbollah rearmed under the watchful eye of the UN, the same body that allowed Saddam to play his litttle oil for food scam that let the Iraqis starve. And it was Bush that mediated the ceasefire between north and south Sudan.
Expat, history is going to laugh its head off at those who belittled Bush and cherished Obama.
Bob,
No, history isn’t – history rarely does such a thing. Bush will have a whole chapter at least (maybe more) and Obama will be our first black President and nothing more.
Indeed, it will not take long for “history” to do this either. Once he is no longer President the lefties will flock to have us forget everything that went on so they can try and repeat it (just this time have it “work”). Just as he has thrown everyone he needs to under the bus for those reasons so will his supporters.
If he wasn’t black he wouldn’t get anything more than on the list of US Presidents that no one remembers 20 years after they left office.
So, Israel was allegedly behind the killing of some mooslim, terrorist scum? So what? If they were, good. It is similar to saying that the Orkin man killed cockroaches in my house. Good. It is about time that ridding the world of those who should be subject to “deceasement” is recognized as a good thing.
Expat, you think history will forget the betrayal of democracy in Honduras, Iran and ME, the betrayal of the Czechs, Poles, the assumption of the role of master rather servant of the people in the Obamacare vote, the spending? He is certainly due a great deal of recognition.
Actually it is an interesting question; how will a legitimate historian reconcile the knavery of Obama with the general decency of every other President? My guess is that the lefties will try and spin his dementia as insights. It will be like trying to bury a mountain. And there will always be all those pesky contemporary first hand sources.
I got news for all of you invoking “History” as if it were a benign, objective, wholly meritorious agency with an infinite life. History is written by historians, who swear no oaths of objectivity in the current era, are held to no standard of “legitimacy”, and the outcome of our present fight is far from clear. It may well be that BHO will become revered, and the pesky first hand sources will be whispered about at best. Fortunately, his clan is a great deal smaller than the Kennedys’. Let us now give thanks he has no male issue.
Bob,
I hate to think what the Poles think when they hear that Obama’s SMART treaty won’t be recognied by the Russians if it interferes with its ability to defend itself.
For those of you who want to be prepared to refute the “blood libel” bogosity (i.e., the complaint that SP’s use of it is wrong), I’ll call attention to a nice little summary over on No Oil For Pacifists:
Who Else Called Political Smear a “Blood Libel”?
Plenty of people, many on the left
> It may well be that BHO will become revered
Yes, and maybe the porcine species will suddenly develop aerial capacity, and call for a sudden and desperate need for reinforced umbrellas!!
I’m planning on starting a reinforced umbrella company!!
Want to invest?
