They’re White. They’re Men. They’re Angry at Obama. Why, they must be…
Angry White Men.
Which means that they must also be Racist Angry White Men—if not overtly racist then certainly covertly so. I mean, what other reason would they have to be angry at our President?
According to Michael Crowley, a New Republic editor writing in the Guardian, Angry White Men who have been at the forefront of the conservative movement for years have a special beef against Obama:
Today, white men again symbolise the conservative resistance to a Democratic president. And with a black man in the White House, the racial element is even more pronounced…Implicit in the celebration of Joe the Plumber, whether intentional or not, was also a racial contrast with the African-American Democratic candidate.
Obama’s race is the gift that keeps on giving. It will continue to do so until we see the unlikely spectacle of hordes of Angry Black Men rising up against him. That’s the only thing that will get those poor Angry White Men off the hook—and maybe not even that.
The fact that the opponents of health care reform speaking up at the town hall meetings are clearly motivated by extremely substantive issues other than racial hatred of Obama is irrelevant to Michael Crowley. In fact, many of them are also at least as furious at Congress and the person of one White Woman Nancy Pelosi, as well as a number of Very White CongressMen.
But repeat after me: they are White. They are Men. They are Angry at Obama. They are Angry White Men.
And don’t let the fact that some of them are women confuse you, either. Those women (for example, Sarah Palin) are Angry White Men too, albeit honorary ones. After all, there is no Angry White Man more racist than an Angry White Woman.
And the fact that there are even a few Angry Black Men speaking out at the town halls against Obama’s health care reform plan is irrelevant. For example, although Kenneth Gladney—who may or may not have been physically attacked and beaten at a town hall meeting by a black Obama supporter and SEIU member—is unquestionably a black man, and unquestionably a vocal opponent of the President’s health care reform, for the purposes of our discussion we will consider him an Angry White Man too.
After all, since Obama’s approval rating among black Americans remains steady at 95% (the only group in which it hasn’t declined), that most definitely makes Gladney an outlier. He’s been branded a liar as well by the Left. What could be Angrier and Whiter and Manner than than an outlieing liar?
But Michael Crowley, although white and a man, and rather angry at the Angry White Men who are angry at Obama, is not an Angry White Man. That’s because he’s on the Left and an Obama supporter, so that makes him immune to the charge.
Crowley’s not to blame for fanning the flames of racism, either. Anyone who cries “racism” against Obama opponents, even if he writes an entire column emphasizing their white race, can’t be a racist himself because he supports Obama, who in case you haven’t noticed (and Obama and Crowley and the Left will make sure you notice, every step of the way) is black.
Of course, if we wanted to get really technical, we might say that Obama is half white and half black. And he’s a man. So, when he gets angry, does that make him an Angry Half-White Man?
Don’t be silly. Obama never gets angry.
[NOTE: As for other Angry White Men of the past, here’s Twelve of ’em—including one of my all time favorite Angry White Men, Henry Fonda, the guy sitting on the left-hand side (to the right in the photo) of the Angry White Man with the hat:
And since I’m an unrepentant Henry Fonda fan, let’s have another photo, a portrait of the almost-beautiful younger Fonda in the film “The Grapes of Wrath:”
Now you might say that Tom Joad, Fonda’s character in that movie, was another Angry White Man. But he gets a pass as well, since back in those days Angry White Men were part of the Great Oppressed, and at any rate Joad turns into a crusader for social justice and the Left [emphasis mine]:
Wherever you can look, wherever there’s a fight, so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever there’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad. I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry and they know supper’s ready, and when the people are eatin’ the stuff they raise and livin’ in the houses they build, I’ll be there, too.]
Obviously the play on emotions rather than reason is the best basis for argument when you are trying to sway an emotionally driven constituency. Demonizing the opposition, and their ideas, is much easier than trying to build a case based on facts that need vetting. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. Anger naturally raises in the rational crowd when the underlaying facts are in dispute regardless of ethnic heritage, or race.
Heh….try walking in the shoes sometime of a man, who happens to be white, who happens to be angry – who happens to be Southern….

We all know that the “real” target of the health care protesters is President Obama and not health care policy. Well, Mike Lupica knows that and is generous enough to share his insight with the rest of us.
”
The most violent opposition isn’t directed at his ideas about health care reform. It is directed at him. It is about him. They couldn’t make enough of a majority to beat the Harvard-educated black guy out of the White House, so they will beat him on an issue where they see him as being most vulnerable.”
Yeah, people who have historically opposed these same policies for almost 40 years have suddenly decided they don’t really care about nationalized health care, what they really care about is beating the Harvard-educated black man. Because they couldn’t possibly have any other reason. So, Mr. Lupica, explain to us which one of the Clintons, Bill or Hillary, was a Harvard-educated black guy when HillaryCare crashed and burned in 1994 due to the objections of this same group of people.
The new m.o. of the Left seems to be to never ascribe to party politics any difference that in some way, you can twist, pull, mash, press, and mangle beyond all recognition into a racial accusation. Because if you ascribe it to party politics, it winds up looking an awful lot like the exact same thing your side has been doing for the last eight years. Is it really so remarkable that non-Leftists, non-Democrats, and non-collectivists out there would oppose this policy? And oppose it vigorously?
If I were in Obama shoes, it would make me nervous, the way Democrats labor on assigning all the opposition/protest/resistance to their (our mutual) plans as directed to me personally.
It’d make me think “It starts to look as though I was selected as their fall guy…and the way the issues are framed in the press (which is supposedly on MY side) it seems they are hedging their bets. And in case their propositions will fail, they will not doubt and analyze the propositions (that I’m just giving the voice to), but shield themselves by a scarecrow of racism. They will let me fall for their sins.”
I think I started to feel pity for the silly ∅bama…
I have to say, I always thought the first black President would be a conservative. But it certainly is a big disincentive to voting for a person of color to lead the Executive if criticism of that person is automatically deemed to be racist. But that is the paradigm the Left is now creating.
Between accountability and diversity in politics- I’ll choose accountability every time.
-Bemused White Male
Victor Davis Hanson has a keenly reasoned piece at National Review Online today about “What Went Wrong” with the tidal wave of unthinking popularity which swept Obama to power, and led him to believe he could make the American public swallow anything. Here’s the money quote:
“There is a growing realization that Obama enticed voters last summer with the flashy lure of discontent. But now that they are hooked, he is reeling them in to an entirely different – and, for many a frightening – agenda. Nothing is worse for a president than a growing belief among the public that it has been had.”
Oblio said on another thread that when Obama’s radical agenda failed to gain traction, as it inevitably would, his supporters would start playing on race hysteria.
It’s all so predictable, and so sad – because for the Left, the debate is not about policies that make sense for the American people. It’s about Power, and Control. And they’ll do anything – anything at all – to delegitimize the folks who stand in their way.
Wankers.
There are Angry White Men (AWM?) of all types, but one in particular is the Perot voter. They are largely non-ideological with the overiding feeling that they are being ignored or patronized. The Obama administration plus allies (MSM, Big Labor) seems to have gone out of its way to antagonize them. Every thing the Dems have done has seemed to benefit their political supporters and those with pull only. I believe it was the Stimulus plan that was the root, but it took until now for the AWM and women to find their voice.
I too have grown quite weary of the overplayed race card.
The “angry white man” thing doesn’t quite explain to me – as someone active in the San Antonio Tea Party – why so many of the passionate, articulate and outspoken volunteers I’ve been working with over the last five or six months are women … and the most fiery and passionate public speaker of them all is an immigrant from Columbia, Katherine Moreno. Watching Katherine speak to a crowd would definitely put a spike in the heart of this angry white male meme…
Oh, but this is the legacy media we are talking about. Never mind…

“The Grapes of Wrath” like “Dr. Zhivago” is one of those movies I and always feel compelled to sit down and watch no matter what I was doing.
I know they don’t want to distract people with facts, that the leading opposition leaders are women, like
Dana Loesch and Katie Abram, and Michelle Bachman and well Sarah Palin,
test ∅bama
America is indeed a racist and sexist country. For it demonizes some people openly just for the color of their skin and for their sex as no other Western country does. It demonizes white people openly for being white and men for being men…
When are you Americans getting at last fed up with all this race and sex madness? It’s nauseating and it’s hurting your country in its very soul.
I can only imagine what this constant trashing of white malehood must do to young white boys. Some women with sons seem to have awakened to this nasty phenomenon: they experience what it does to their own young sons. But it is sad that they are not repelled by this whole rotten thing for its own sake.
The race card is reaching a the level of diminishing returns. Here is an example of someone who didn’t successfully play the race card.Black Man Pleads Guilty to Posing as Obama-Hating White Supremacist on Facebook
Recall ∅bama’s playing the race card several times last year on the campaign circuit. Once he said that Dubya and McCain were GOING TO SAY something that would indicate they were racist. Which they never said nor did they go on to say it.
When one is called “racist” for opposing ∅bama: I think back to ∅bama’s being a buddy of Billy All I want for Christmas is a Dictatorship of the Proletariat Ayers. Billy Ayers and his wife are also ones to play the race card, as in the “ you are racist but I am not” card. Perhaps one could call this the Chevy Chase approach to race relations. It is also more of the unexamined superiority complex that has described the left since Adlai and before.
”Racist” is just one of many charges used to demonize those who are protesting :racist, nazi, extremist, un-American, evil-mongers, etc. It is just going to further energize those opposed to ∅bama, as the “little old ladies in tennis shoes” and the “angry white men” are not accustomed to being demonized.
A substantial proportion of Americans- perhaps the majority -have already become desensitized to the race card due its being overplayed too often for too long. When I hear the “racist” charge these days, I roll my eyes, because in addition to reading about the above and the likes of Tawana Bradly, too many scoundrels have tried playing the race card on ME. Like they say, fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. One result of the ∅bama era will be the greatly reduced effectiveness of the race card: one of yours got elected President so stop playing the victim and make something of yourself.
BTW, does Chris Matthews mean that if you don’t get a tingle up your leg about ∅bama that you are a racist?
Many white folks (even on the center-left), as well as most Asian-Americans and even a substantial number of Latinos, tend to hold as a stereotype that the American Left will scream “Racism!” at the drop of a hat in order to ingratiate themselves to African Americans. Columns like Michael Crowley’s just feed into that stereotype. A fair whack of the electorate, just looking at a column like this, will roll their eyes and think ‘Oh boy, here we go again.’
By playing the ‘race’ card, the Left are antagonizing a whole host of people, and they seem completely clueless about it.
kcom,
It’s nice to find out that there is at least one subject about which Lupica knows even less than he does about college football and sports in general.
I imagine that this country will continue to elect the flashier candidate in future elections. I hope, however, that enough voters are learning never to give such a candidate carte blanche with decisive majorities in both Houses. That enough concerned citizens finally raised enough of a ruckus to give these power-hungry weasels pause is encouraging. I just wish it hadn’t taken so long for so many to wake up.
Sgt Mom, those women are WHITE, therefore they are racist, and that’s your explanation. There is no possible reason other than racism for any opinion any white person holds on pretty much any subject.
Sarcasm, obviously (I hope) but I have had people tell me more or less exactly this with a straight face.
My daughter came home from elementary school one day maybe 10 or 15 years ago and asked me, “Why do white people do all the bad things?” This is what she was being taught in the public schools. This is why many people believe it.
The left has wrung the last drops of meaning from the word “racism.” It now is nothing more than a signal that they are out of ideas (to the extent that they ever had any, other than “we need to run everything”). To me, “racism” is a sign around the neck proclaiming the wearer intellectually and morally bankrupt. It’s a handy indicator that it’s time to stop paying attention to the person.

It’d be GREAT if more black Americans were like my friend who is black and American and conservative.
Conservatives are no more racist than anti-jewish. It’s ridiculous to brand people who are for EVERYBODY’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as racist.
OK. Do we have to be against life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in order to be taken seriously by the press.
Oh. That’s right. We do.

Whatever. Just add it to the list of accusations rendered meaningless by rampant over usage:
Greedy.
Warmonger.
Misogynist.
Stupid.
Ignorant.

Rich.
Bible Thumper.
Satanist.

Obama and his bunch of socialist tried to push this bill through as fast as they did the Cap and Trade Tax bill. In fact many, or should it be most all, of congress never bothered to read the bill. But guess what “We the people,,,” did read the bill. And we didn’t like what we read. Now we are racist.
The dims have called the American taxpayers “Un-American” and that didn’t stick. Then they went with the race card and it didn’t play out the way they wanted. Now we are “Angry White Men”. Is the term “Angry White Men” racist code words for the left?
I’m glad to see they are overwhelm us with facts.
Andrew Briebart makes some good points in his editorial about the “George W. Bush-by-proxy syndrome”. He posits that the demonization of Bush by the left, which worked pretty well, is now being applied to any target of opportunity who dares stand up to leftist dogma and threatens to be effective at it. He quotes one of the sources of this strategy, Saul Alinsky’s infamous Rule 12:
“Rule 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it and polarize it. Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.) ”
http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/aug/17/george-w-bush-by-proxy-syndrome/
Alinsky’s Rule 12 has limits. Using it too often makes it progressively less effective. Thankfully the left is diluting the tactic to the point that it becomes meaningless, or even counter-productive.
Plus a large, diffuse target is not nearly as easy to demonize as a person.
That should be:
I’m glad to see they are overwhelming us with facts.
🙂
“Conservatives are no more racist than anti-jewish. It’s ridiculous to brand people who are for EVERYBODY’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as racist.”
If you don’t divide people up and acknowledge them based primarily on the color of their skin you’re a racist. If you don’t believe everyone with the same skin color should believe the same thing (except for white people, of course, who get to choose their own thoughts) you’re a racist. If you question the content of someone’s character or the quality of their ideas and their skin happens to be black, you’re a racist.
We won’t even need wind power or solar power if we can just harvest the energy that will come from Martin Luther King spinning in his grave when he hears about this. In fact, I think I hear a hum coming from the tomb even now.
I think the fundamental divide on race is that one group thinks it’s all important, and the other group thinks it is and ought to be (as we were taught) irrelevant. Yet the group who thinks it’s irrelevant is the one accused of being the racists. As others have said, though, more and more people are rolling their eyes at the bogusness of it. They save their moral opprobrium for genuine examples of racism, where it belongs, so the race card is losing its power.
Older and Wheezier, I was surprised during the election with the Senate results. I thought the American people were wiser than to do something insane like electing near 60 Democrats.

Well, there is this:
Blue sky promises
Obscured, more and more, by white clouds:
Racist white clouds!
Bemused: They had to get a black guy in before we did. Even if he ends up a throw away. They selected Obama.
As we all know, politicians don’t do anything that isn’t about the next election, and securing their place in it.
I really hate to do this, but if OJ had been white, he’d have also been convicted.
Bemused White Male brought up a point – thinking the first black president would be a conservative. But, let’s face it, if they are conservative they can’t really be black. Look at Clarence Thomas or Condy Rice to see the truth of that. The likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would attack them with impunity and the far left “non-angry yea calm and pacific (yeah that’s a hoot) white males and females” would do their best to discredit them and show them as traitors to their race.
Why should race even matter? It doesn’t to me and it doesn’t to most conservatives I know. We all just seem to want the same thing – the best person for the job. I rarely see that from liberals.
And I am sorry but I have to vent a little here. I am getting sick and tired of Geraldo. He says he is a card carrying Republican – which is very probably true, but how you register has nothing to do with how you vote and in states where they have “open” primaries there is no downside to registering with the party you oppose. Anyway – I have heard him make snide and sarcastic remarks regarding Michelle Malkin and others (without mentioning their names) and last night he was talking about how 47 million Latinos were weeping for joy at the swearing in of judge Sotomayor while not even getting it right – saying she was sworn in by the president when it was chief justice Roberts. He also continues to (almost) rant about how all the rich in this country need to pony up to pay for the health care of all those people who have none – including those who are here illegally and those who merely refuse to buy insurance they can easily afford. And, much like O’Reilly, he dismisses anyone who may disagree with his views with a flippant wave of his hand and a combination smirk-sneer.
Sorry to get off message but there are people like him who call themselves Republicans or conservatives who continue to propagate the idea of deep-rooted and endemic racism in this country. It didn’t bother me too much when he was sticking to opening Capone’s vault and other idiocies. Still it does lend credence to the fact that Fox News definitely gives voice to all opinions.
Geraldo is a Card carrying Republican my little white butt.
uh.
I listened to him last night – he had on Kirsten Powers and Ann Coulter.
Geraldo is one of the people upset about the public option being dropped.
Every time I hear him he is for MORE government. He is a republican like Megan McCain is….

The Angry White Male trick played well in 1994. They’re hoping it will play again.
They are getting desperate.

Don’t be faked out !
Conservatives outnumber liberals in all 50 states.
Though… Democrats outnumber Republicans in 30 states.
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/52602
What does it all mean?
That Republicans have not led and not been conservative?
That Republicans have been misrepresented?
That Democrats are good at fooling people?
Whatever it means – I sense that more people are becoming politically aware..
Where do illegal immigrants–of any color or race–stand in the angry white man hall of fame?
I am continually amazed that Obama & Co., the Head of HEW, Congressmen, assorted public figures, heads of left wing advocacy groups, newspaper writers and editorialists, news anchors and reporters are allowed to get away with using the “45 million Americans without health insurance” line as the main proof that our health care system is “broken,” and as the main justification for “health care reform,” without that statistic being challenged and “deconstructed” whenever it is uttered.
The statistic comes from the periodic survey of health care status that the Census does, (Report P60-235 here at http://www.census.gov/prod/2008pubs/p60-235.pdf) and a look at the Census report in question shows that more than an estimated 9 million–and if there are actually 20 million illegal aliens in this country, as some suspect–20 million of those “45 million Americans” without health insurance–roughly between a quarter and a half of them–are not Americans” at all, but are illegal aliens.
This should be hammered away at, at every opportunity, because if they were made aware of this figure, I doubt that a lot of voters would be willing to pick up the tab for the care of people who deliberately violated our laws by sneaking across our borders, are not American citizens, and who are sucking on the public teat to the tune of many tens of billions of dollars a year already, and are a major reason that states, counties and cities with high illegal populations are going bankrupt, because they are providing illegals with social services, education, medical care and spaces in their prisons.
In addition, if you look at the above Census Report you will also see that perhaps a quarter to a half of those in the 45 million are people who are either young and healthy–the “Immortals” and don’t want to buy health insurance, older folks who can afford to buy but–for whatever reason–don’t buy either, and those only technically without health insurance, because they are changing jobs or providers.
Bottom line, the number of “Americans” who are truly “without health insurance” and would want to buy it, is around 10 million, not 45 million, and in any case anyone with health insurance or not must be taken care of if they present themselves to any hospital in the country–thus all of those hospital systems being bankrupted by the illegals crowding their emergency rooms. So “without health insurance”‘ really means “without a comprehensive suite of health care coverages.”
Baklava – they usually disguise the illegals in that number by saying “47M people in this country,” rather than “47M Americans.”
As we say up in NH, “Just because the cat had kittens in the oven, I wouldn’t call ’em biscuits.”
For the record if they are for more and more big government, I am against them. If they want to increase the scope, reach and intrusiveness, I am against them.
If that makes me a racist then so be it.
As bad as the misuse of the terms “racist” and “nazi” by the Left is, it has another effect. It makes us forget just how bad the real forms of these things are. That forgetting is dangerous. We were determined, after WWII, after Jim Crow, to not forget what happened when we allowed the true men of evil to take control. Now we have forgotten.
Are angry white gay men still angry white men?
PA, N∅pe. They are full of L∅ve. 🙂
YES, thank you, njcommuter. To scream racism when the police arrest a rude homeowner for disorderly conduct is to trivialize lynchings and slavery, and to desensitize us all to real evil when it comes along.
“45 million Americans” without health insurance–roughly between a quarter and a half of them—are not Americans””
Yeah, I really dug into that number once / researched it.
Yes, it includes:
* Non American citizens
* People eligible but not enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid (note: these DO NOT have preexisting conditions clauses so if you become ill, you can enroll after the fact).
* Plenty of people young people without health problems eligible for inexpensive healthcare coverage if they would just enroll. I.e., they could get insurance for the price of cable TV if they would just try.
Some people throw in people with high incomes but I don’t have any data about their health so I’m not comfortable with that argument (they might indeed make $75k + a year AND also not be able to get insurance…).
Cutting out just the people I did and you’re down to about 10 million uninsured. Not all of whom have health issues or an immediate need for coverage (if they’re not ill, paying cash for routine things might be cheaper to them than insurance… from their pov). Keep in mind; the libs say 44 million uninsured, not 44 million in need of care who can not get it. I can’t find more data to narrow the number down to just who is not getting care but needs it….
On the plus, pragmatic side, if we do go with a universal coverage type law (as some states do with auto insurance) there might be some degree of self funding here… if we compel 44 million people to get into the insurance system while only, say, 1 million have health issues….
The DHS document that purported to make the claim that right wing groups were on the rise was preceded by an 11-page lexicon document listing terms from A through W, beginning with “aboveground,” which was defined as extremist groups or people who “operate overtly and portray themselves as law-abiding,”

As far as The Won goes, I support my President, but not his policies.

Either they condoned Glass making up stories out of whole cloth or they were ignorant of the facts.
In any event, TNR is just another cancer cell in the American body politic.
The fix is in – has been for a long time. If you’re white, you cannot come out of a race discussion looking like anything but a racist. Even if you’re not an overt racist – a dyed-in-the-wool, unreconstructed redneck racist – lefties can still perform scientific experiments that will prove you have racist tendencies that you’re unaware of. You’re a crypto-racist, and thos unconscious racist feelings taint even your most well-meaning attempts not to be a racist. And failing that, they can still say you benefit from the racist institutions that are the foundation of your racist country. Basically if you’re white your very existence is a racial issue.
This is off subject but appropriate.
Thankfully there’s always someone who hasn’t figured out that we have both video cameras and digital recorders and will, in an unguarded moment when he or she thinks they’re among friends, say what they really believe without spin.
Meet Democratic New York Representative Eric Massa, who, while reveling in the cocoon of the Netroots Nation over the weekend (instead of holding a townhall meeting in his usually Republican district) provided a glimpse of why the Democrats sound like they do:
Video – Rep. Massa: I will vote against the interests of my district
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXWmVBadWvU
By Kerry Picket on Aug. 16, 2009
Does it get any clearer than that?
Just sit down and shut up and let your betters decide what’s good for you. After all they won.
Massa isn’t there to “represent” anyone. He’s made it clear that his agenda and his party’s agenda take precedence over anything his constituency wants. If they agree with him fine. But if they don’t, he obviously doesn’t give a damn. His mind is made up, he got the memo from Nancy. Massa is not going to hold any townhalls and his constituency can go to hell, because Massa has already decided what is best for them.
I’ve been wondering for a long time if women would figure out it is their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons who are hurt by male bashing and discrimination. Boys (black and white) are falling behind in school and employment and few notice or care.
Racist: Anyone who is winning an argument with a liberal.
It has to do with oppressed oppressor dialectics. an opperssor class can never become the oppressed class, and anything that the oppressed class does to the oppressor class is called justice. the oppressors are not allowed to respond in any way, since any meaningful response is just to further the side of the oppressor class.
Exactly.
And America is finally getting sick and tired of the left using this tactic.
The left have overplayed it to the point of their detriment, and Obama himself has drawn from the well too many times.
It is now becoming counter-productive for them – and it is about time.

Women are oppressed in the east, in the west, in the south, in the north. Women are oppressed inside, outside home, a woman is oppressed in religion, she is oppressed outside religion.
Taslima Nasrin
Your generous part in my liberation is taken by the world for the revelation of the fact, that the United States are resolved not to allow the despots of the world to trample on oppressed humanity.
Lajos Kossuth
Praxis is the interrelationship between theory (or insight) and action. Action that does not follow from theory is weak and untrustworthy. Theory which doesn’t lead to action is mere game playing.
Dialectical: This is an Hegelian concept, which Marx also used. The notion is this. A way to be in the world (call it A) develops in history. It embodies a view of the world. However, the view has in it directions which ensure its own end. [For example: using limited fuels as a source of energy carries with it the logic of its own end, since it uses up what it needs to have for energy.] When the contradiction comes (this moment when the logic of the dialectic is fulfilled), history goes one, and a new concept will develop which overcomes the previous contradiction, but, given the imperfection of our ideas and of history itself, will again be fraught with contradictions. This process is called the dialectical process of history. The oppressor-oppressed dialectic is, according to at least Hegel, Marx and Freire (and many many others) one such historical dialectic.
and to how they view angry white men
False generosity and paternalism: The point Freire is making with these terms is that when a system is structured so that there are oppressors and oppressed, some of the oppressor class feel genuine compassion toward the suffering of the oppressed. They move to isolate that suffering and to aid it, not to address the structures of society which are the root causes. Thus, to the extent that they relieve any suffering they do so by hiding from themselves the genuine causes, their own privilege as oppressor class members.
Oh it goes further than that. I hear that whites don’t have culture. How can a culture not be a culture? Just because whites have not been as flashy or as loud as certain other cultures does not mean they do not have culture. It just means they are more subdued. Prehaps aptly described as more contemplative.

pdbuttons,
The closest thing to an international language may not be from the current empire, but from the one previous. Take for instance Greek. It seems that Greek held on long after the Romans became a world power. Then the Roman language, Latin, held on long after the Western Roman empire fell.
The black president, chosen by many it seems to atone for racial sins of the past (so they thought) is in some ways a vestige of the previous favored minority, not the up and coming one.

Wow. The passion. She starts to hit on all cylinders lately…
Hey buttons, 🙂
The left already have the black vote no matter what they do.
The black voting block is fodder to the left. Democrats need to import more socialists from the southern continent for a lasting majority.

You know, if it weren’t so sad, it would be funny. Those on the left that scream racism are often racist themselves, and oblivious to it. The do-gooders, of course, think that minorities aren’t capable of taking care of themselves so we, the white people, must institute myriad social programs to take care of them.
Also, you see, if you are successful it can only be because you are oppressing someone else. Western culture is successful, therefore it must be oppressive. Which explains, in part, the antipathy toward Israel. It is a relatively successful nation, therefore, it must have its boot on someone else’s neck. Another part, of course, is an outlet for the antisemitic on the left, where they can claim they’re not antisemitic, just anti-Zionist. Again, the same people bleating about the racism of the right hold up signs saying ‘Death to Israel’ and the like.
By the way, I am also a ardent and unrepentant Henry Fonda fan.

Heh, unwittingly they are using a conservative viewpoint to come to that conclusion. Ie: Culture is doing the same things in the same ways (as before).
American culture (I think by what you mean white) is pragmatic, progressive, and open to new things… Again, these things are part of the culture… and/or a ‘conservative’ American is more open to new things (like foods) or ways of doing things than a ‘left wing radical’ Frenchman…

Scottie says “Heh….try walking in the shoes sometime of a man, who happens to be white, who happens to be angry – who happens to be Southern….”
Your shoes are my shoes, but mine might have a little more weight to them. Add these things to your list – who also happens to be a professor, who happens to be in an eastern university – and you have my shoes. I guess it’s the charm of my southern accent that keeps them off of me. It couldn’t be my smarts > not to express my true self except in trusted company. Sorta like Occam has said many times about his life in Berkeley .. . . if they only knew.
Frankly, as a white man I’ve noticed that we’ve been bad-mouthed by just about everyone for the past 40 years at least. Just add it to the list. Like Clark said calmly and without rancor, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Are you the same pdbuttons that frequents the Protein Wisdom sight?
You seem to have the same writing style.
If so, please just stop your lame off topic thread hijackings, and the rambling comments right now.
I used to enjoy reading the comment sections there but the lame troll droppings by a “pdbuttons” really just got so annoying that I installed the trollhammer script just so my browser would auto-skip comments by “pdbuttons”.

Scapegoats: write your Own Sins on a clay tablet, tie it around the goat’s neck, and drive the poor creature into the desert to die.
An old nomad custom. T’ain’t fair to the goat, though.
Oh, Neo, I just now realized you have a picture of the book The Last Lion on your tabletop. Great biography of a great man.
JohnC,
I defer to your weightiness…..I DEFINITELY don’t have that issue to deal with!
Then again, I don’t think I have the temperament to tolerate that kind of environment.
Now seriously – when was the last time anyone heard of any Southern white male being defended in the media, or portrayed in the mass mindless media, as anything other than an incompetent, a joke, or a racist a$$?
Anyone?
BTW, best two money quotes from the comments section so far, IMHO:
# Occam’s Beard Says:
August 17th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
“White. Male. Heterosexual.
The wretched refuse of the earth. What have they ever done for humanity?”
AND
# I R A Darth Aggie Says:

“Frankly, as a pale-skinned dangler, I’m used to shouldering the blame for everyone’s failures, real and imagined.
I guess you could call it the white man’s burden.”
—-“pale-skinned dangler”….still laughing over that one!
One more thought…in all honesty it doesn’t seem like it’s just “pale-skinned danglers” who are being targeted these latest days.
The groups that Obama & Minions have now targeted – and pi$$ed off – include the following:
– Doctors.
– Police.
– United States Postal Workers.
– The elderly (especially if they have a zest for life!).
– Anyone who supports Israel.
I’m sure I’m missing a few groups though…..
Scottie, there is a reason the president has not given a speech at any of the large post offices. His Secret Service guards would be out gunned.
John,
He’s worried about the postal workers going…postal?
😉
Thankfully there’s always someone who hasn’t figured out that we have both video cameras and digital recorders and will, in an unguarded moment when he or she thinks they’re among friends, say what they really believe without spin.
I think in most cases it’s slightly different and perhaps more complicated but in the same ballpark as the commentor’s thought. What technology has done is to make it more difficult for politicians to tailor their speech to whatever group of individual they are addressing.
But it still takes the MSM to get the damning speech and other news to a widespread audience. The last party primary and Presidential campaigns are cases in point. The Edwards scandal wasn’t covered because Edwards siphoned off primary votes from Hillary which meant Obama had a better chance to be nominated. Knocking Edwards out of the race would have probably have meant Hillary would have been the nominee. After the MSM was forced to cover the Edwards scandal the coverage was tailored in order to leave doubt in the public’s mind whether Edwards was guilty. In a way it might have even helped Edwards by elevating his status in the news cycle.
Obama was sometimes caught saying unpalatable things both during the nomination process and the Presidential campaign but the MSM always has a strategy to limit the damage. Take the “spreading the wealth” slip — the strategy was to focus on Joe the Plumber instead of Obama’s words and their implications.
We see this now in the healthcare debate. What Obama has said and is saying about healthcare is constantly being amended, excused and denied by the MSM.

we have encountered Sandel and his theory here a couple of times, way back in 2003, in discussing how preferentialists have abandoned individual rights in favor of group rights (discriminating against individual whites and Asians isn’t discrimination because whites and Asians as a group suffer no undue hardship).

general differences of white males.
http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/fac/probst/309/whitemen.ppt
for a white male there was an average of 20 scholarships, for a while female there were an average of over 200 scholarships, and for minorities, another 200 scholarships
thats 40 to 1… (and thats still not enough in their eyes. which is why i dont work in a lab doing what i wanted to do since i was 4)
with the last link detailing college courses designed by diveristy feminists and such, you can hear them list out the same old same old.. (like 76 cents to every dollar… which has been debunked as much as the superbowl wife beating meme).
on the myths page they say a large proportion of white workers will lose out is a myth. well i wanted to be a research physicist… given that i got bronx science and high sat scores i thought i could get into a school. but i scored too high, and so didnt meet their diversity issues since they had been taught this kind of pap, and so believed that discrimination against me was seen the way that Sandel teaches it.
the whole thing makes all kinds of crap assertions that if your in class and ‘learning’ you cant asnwer to.
questions along the line of when did you stop beating your wife?
things like…
“whites have a hard time defining race because they ahve never had to think of themsevles in terms of a race., they tend to think of themselves as HUMAN not WHITE. “to be white is simply to be”
would really imply that whites are not racist, and everyone else is… against whites.
even saying that there is
“angry white male syndrome”
seems like the racists are the ones that see the world through race glasses, and the power people like femnists see the world thorugh power dialectics, and the communists see it in classes, and so on.
us poor guys who just see the world as is. have no place. for us there is no reason to put on a view.
so why or how can they ever learn to take off their racist, gender, etc views. if they cant stop seeing everything in those terms whether they are or arent?
just cause a racist can twist a thing to signify racism, doesnt make it so.
all it does is make a world where every idea that can be twisted becoems forbidden.
The south has been in the shitter since before the civil war. The holier than thoughs from up north like to keep it that way. I just wish they’d stay up there. More faces than a fine diamond. I’d fight by their side in a war if necessary, fellow Americans and all, but I’d much rather be in a fox hole with another man from the south, watching each other’s backs.
My morther was born and raised in Boston, my father, Providence. I was born and raised in southeast coastal VA, an area I would consider neither north or south, but a true melting pot area.
I prefer the people down here.
Taking the above into consideration, I certainly don’t want money coming out of my pocket to pay for the mistakes of NYC, Philly, Boston, et. al., no matter the color of anyone’s skin, race, religion….. whatever. Screw ’em may be the term I’m looking for.
Charleston harbor wasn’t blockheaded because of slavery. Fort Sumter was fired upon because it was full of U.S. soldiers attempting to prevent sailing ships from heading for Europe to get better prices for cotton.
The civil war basically started as a war between SC and MA – over cotton. Clearing the air will never happen. Like Churchill said, the first victim in war is truth. Gotta love history revisionists.
OK, that’s way off subject, too. Feel free to pummell me with heavy verbage.
I’m not saying slavery was ever right, of course it wasn’t. But there was no need to lie about it.
Pat Buchanan is a counter-productive spokesperson on this topic if there ever was one in the public shere. His admiration of Hitler claiming he was such a magnificent statesman and commander in his recent book, “Churchill, Hitler, and “The Unnecessary War”: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World” ALONG with his admiration and nod to white ethno-Christian militias be they in the wrong or in the right, is very very troubling is further explored — and makes him something of a demagog of the Paleoconservative Right — which is a very very different philosophy than that of the Center Right. Buchanan is no spokesperson for the Center-Right — for wings of the Extreme Right Yes — but not on the Center Right and there is a major difference. A difference as sharply, if not more so but sharply drawn between what we see manifesting now on the Left; the Obamaphiles -vs- Kucinich/Nader Supporters.
Nyom, Quote Buchanan or I have to say “They you go again…..“
Lazy again?

This is my last post on this topic Nyom. No amount of due diligence on your part can back up your comment.
I personally do not like Buchanan. I don’t believe he is helpful on many topics. I just do not appreciate your style of hit and runs on people who don’t deserve it. The Internet give you a freedom that you abuse.
I affirm my comments, I might research it for you later though. I’m on a laptop now and I really need a mouse to maneuver the way I wish.
Very well put! I couldn’t have said it better myself, mostly because I lack as much talent as you at writing this stuff. But I try. And in the meantime, I’m grateful for you being better at it than me.
The biggest con-job on the American public is how the left took the Civil Rights issue away from the Republicans. Until Roosevelt there was no such a thing a Black Democrat. And all those 1920’s photographs of tens of thousands of Klansmen marching on the Capital – those were Democrats my friends. A big of Republican heritage lest we forget:
As for the Republican record on civil rights:
– Emancipation Proclamation
– the Confiscation Act.
– 13th Amendment to the Constitution
– 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
– 1875 Civil Rights Act guaranteed the right of equal access to all citizens in all public accommodations
– 1918, Women’s Suffrage Amendment
– Civil Rights Act of 1957 (preceded (and was almost identical to) the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but was shot down by Democrats)
– Civil Rights Act of 1964 (see Note*)
*Note: Civil Rights Act of 1964

Thanks, Vieux Charles. I forwarded those factoids to my niece Jessie. She’s voted for some Republicans, tho she did vote for Ovomit last fall (ugh). She knows her aunt (moi) took a sharp turn to the right, and asked me about it. Which I appreciated. We had a pretty good conversation about it, but she’s in college and has been getting the Business, you know.
When she gets out of the brainwashing machine, I hope she’ll be able to shake most of it off. At least she’s thinking and asking questions.
This is one I keep on my hard disk for any discussion which denigrates men of any race.
How many times a day do you hear that men are just plain no good and the planet would be better off without them? Ten times a day? A hundred times a day?
Any woman who can find nothing good to say about men is mentally ill, when we examine the evidence all around us; over us; under us. The very fact most women even exist is a direct result of the work of men, and I do not mean supplying genetic materials.
Walk over to the window and look out. Everything you see out there was either made or invented by men, and usually both made AND invented by men.
The streets. The street lights. The sidewalks. The cars; trucks; and motorcycles driving by. The electric wires. The telephone wires. The cable TV wires. The water pipes under the ground. The sewage pipes under the ground. The storm sewers. Anything else you see out there that is made by humans was invented or made by men.
The floor or carpet you walked on to get to the window was almost certainly installed by men. The window was installed by men. The wall the window is in was installed by men. The foundation of the building was installed by men.
The electrical wires in your building were installed by men. The telephone was invented by a man. The computer and its software you are using to read this was invented by men.The climate control which keeps you comfortable was invented and developed by a man.
If everything made or invented by men were removed, you would be looking at native plants from the entrance of your cave. And, you would be hungry and cold and wearing rabbit skins.
If you want to see what it’s like when women are in charge, visit your local slum, preferably at midnight if you dare. Every town over 10,000 people has a well known place like this.
The yards will be unmowed and littered with junk. Houses will be boarded up. Burned cars will be lying in the streets. Nobody has a job; except for prostitution; pimping; burglary; and dealing drugs. Every house you see is a female headed household.
Find the best part of your town, where the streets are clean, the yards are well maintained; the houses are in great shape. Most of these houses belong to male headed households.
For forty years, every male has had to listen daily to a litany of male failings and evils. Yet, everything I have written here is absolute truth.
