First talker I ever paid attention to on the radio. Common sense and humor. He’ll be missed.
I’ve been a fan of his for many years. I first heard him back in the 70s and he sounded like a voice from the Golden Age of radio.
Well, I guess he was, and he was the last of them.
I was first drawn to him by his fascinating “The Rest of the Story” series, but also, as Deekaman said, his common sense and humor.
I was a leftist at that time, and it was a while before I learned to appreciate his unapologetic patriotism. But I eventually “got it”.
I’ll miss him.
I liked him – his “interesting” (shall we say) inflections were a signature that would have been recognizable even if his voice had changed.
The very existence of a show like The Rest of the Story should tell us to always, always, get all the facts before judging.
At my last job, my boss said by way of warning that he thought that someone in another group, someone that I would have to work with, was on tranquilizers. He told me later that he did sometimes have to take painkillers–because of an orthopedic problem that caused his hip joints to misalign. He managed to hide the limp most of the time, but that just meant that when he couldn’t, it looked like he was impaired. The mood swings were not from drugs, but from pain. And yes, the limp matched exactly the problem he described.
So judge if you will, but take that judgement as tentative until you have the rest of the story.
90 years is a pretty good run.
Would that I fare so well…
As LGF points out, Mr. Harvey himself now knows the rest of the story. (If only he could share it with the rest of us…)
Rest in peace.
If I were the devil
By Paul Harvey
I would gain control of the most powerful nation in the world;
I would delude their minds into thinking that they had come from man’s effort, instead of God’s blessings;
I would promote an attitude of loving things and using people, instead of the other way around;
I would dupe entire states into relying on gambling for their state revenue;
I would convince people that character is not an issue when it comes to leadership;
I would make it legal to take the life of unborn babies;
I would make it socially acceptable to take one’s own life, and invent machines to make it convenient;
I would cheapen human life as much as possible so that the life of animals are valued more than human beings;
I would take God out of the schools, where even the mention of His name was grounds for a lawsuit;
I would come up with drugs that sedate the mind and target the young, and I would get sports heroes to advertise them;
I would get control of the media, so that every night I could pollute the mind of every family member for my agenda;
I would attack the family, the backbone of any nation.
I would make divorce acceptable and easy, even fashionable. If the family crumbles, so does the nation;
I would compel people to express their most depraved fantasies on canvas and movie screens, and I would call it art;
I would convince the world that people are born homosexuals, and that their lifestyles should be accepted and marveled;
I would convince the people that right and wrong are determined by a few who call themselves authorities and refer to their agenda as politically correct;
I would persuade people that the church is irrelevant and out of date, and the Bible is for the naive;
I would dull the minds of Christians, and make them believe that prayer is not important, and that faithfulness and obedience are optional;
I guess I would leave things pretty much the way they are.

Freshman year in college I had all early classes. I found that for me the only thing good about that was being turned on to Paul Harvey and getting to wake up to him and listen for a little while every day before class. He was amazing, today March 3rd, Mark Levin played his broadcast from 1963 reporting on the JFK assassination, that was a real treat. RIP Paul, I’ll never forget you, thank you. Your son does a great job too.
