Our brilliant press: this would be funny if it weren’t so sad
Just when you think the anti-Palin press has covered itself with enough shame, it sinks still lower. James Taranto has found a real howler:
A hilarious example of press bias against Palin occurred last Friday on “The Diane Rehm Show,” a production of Washington’s WAMU-FM. The exchange between hostess Rehm, caller Tom of Norwich, Vt., and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne begins at about 46:10 of the “10:00 News Roundup”:
Tom: I just wonder why not more has been made of the statement by Palin during the debate last night that “Maliki and the Talabani”–this is a quote from the transcript–“also in working with us are knowing again that we are getting closer and closer to the point of victory.” The Talibani obviously are our absolute enemy and have been since 9/11; Maliki, our central ally in Iraq. This to me is a tremendous blunder, revealing a very superficial familiarity with these sorts of terms.
Rehm: Thanks for calling, Tom. . . . E.J.?
Dionne: I think that “superficial” is absolutely the right word for the knowledge or the lack of knowledge Palin showed yesterday. I’m glad the caller raised that one, and I suspect there is going to be a scouring of that transcript for exactly that sort of gaffe. That has echoes of some of the stuff she said to Katie Couric.
There would have to be some mighty ferocious scouring to find a gaffe here other than Tom’s (who can be excused) and Dionne’s (who cannot). Even a lowly blogger like me knows the difference between Talabani and the Taliban. As does Sarah Palin (scroll down to VP Debate at 9:42).
But evidently the news that Talabani is the President of Iraq hasn’t yet penetrated the infinitely superior and deep brain of the sagacious WaPo journalist Dionne. Maybe his excuse is that he’s been listening too much to foreign policy expert Senator Biden, he of “France and the US kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon” fame.
So if I can be of service, I’d like to help Mr. Dionne out with some pictorial aids:
TALABANI
THE TALIBAN
Also, to help out a little more:
E. J. DIONNE
DIONNE QUINTUPLETS
[ADDENDUM: The Anchoress gives the press a tongue lashing, and points out how hostile to freedom of speech Obama and his hordes are.]
Neo,
I’ve been directed a few times before to the Global Labor and Politics site, and have read other entries. He seems to be an honest writer, though many of his views are rather to the left, which of course may make him even more credible in this context.
In one of his pieces, he mentioned a fellow named Staughton Lynd, whom I recalled from my undergraduate days at Yale. Lynd was a lecturer and highly controversial peace activist, and I was surprised to find that he was still active and still writing, and had not changed his views one iota!

God, they are disgusting. Pathetic. They are so hell bent on slamming her they find no need to check the “facts.” I mean, it’s obvious Palin has no clue what she is talking about, so why bother?
Expect a retraction of some kind? Heck, no. If it gets mentioned at all we will get another Rather-esque, “The document may be a forgery, but the story is still true.”

In as much as she was absolutely correct and was referring to Maliki and Talibani, the Iraqi president, one can only conclude the Dionne is a pompous turd and total dumb ass.
hilarious. nicely done
Dionne and the Dionne Quints. I’m laughing my @#$ off. You go Neo NeoCon. I found you because of Ace; I’ll be checking back in.
Good Stuff, Good Stuff!
It is to laugh
Re: Rehm and Dionne: Hacks. To Neo: *grin* Elegantly done.
Wait…Dionne….didn’t he sing with the Belmonts?
But are you sure E.J. Dionne *isn’t* one of the Dionne Quintuplets, secretly living as a male Washington Post columnist as part of an intricate cover-up? Why have we not seen his birth certificate? Release the DNA tests! Can you prove it didn’t happen?

A New Blood Libel against McCain; I served on an aircraft carrier, the Kennedy, was in a damage control party & went to damage control and firefighting school…There we studied the Forrestal fire of 67..We broke the video down piece learning from mistakes the fire parties made..( After covering burning fuel in fire smothering foam, hose parties washed away he foam allowing the fuel to reignite.)In the video of the tragedy you can clearly see the Zuni missile streak down the flightdeck and hit McCain’s plane starting the conflagration…..So today at work an Obama supporter tells me that McCain’s screwing around, ( cold starting his jet) caused the tragedy which killed 130+ sailors…Apparently, this slanderous lie is making the rounds of ObamaWorld…I told him how I’d studied the video of the fire in Navy DC school and told him that the video is available on line…We got into it pretty good…Fu*K Him!! How low will these people go??
We got into it pretty good…Fu*K Him!! How low will these people go??
Lower still…they will not lose this election. Anything they can do to win they will do. Some of it will end up being extremely illegal and it won’t bother them a bit since the ends justify the means.
One need only listen to Ayers discuss whether he has any remorse for being party to the attempted murder of many. Hint…he does not.
“Shameless” is another word to describe the press. The last straw for me came back in one of the debates in ’92 between Slick Willy and the elder Bush. This debate was “moderated” by Carol Simpson of ABC News. It was not a debate, it was really a show trial for Bush. I did not have a lot of respect for journalists then but still had a shred of hope some might live up to the Jeffersonian ideal. Really, it seems 90%+ of journalists believe they are the fourth branch of government. Or, is it “fifth column,” since they are so bound and determined to elect their chosen candidates anything and everything is fair game, and the ends justify the means?
If Palin meant “Talibani”, then why did she call him “the Talibani”????? Sounds like she was reciting memorized sound bites and confused herself between the Taliban and Iraqi President Jalal Talibani….hmmmm…..
What’s the pysch term for someone who’s not sure whether their opponents are cleverly feigning ignorance or are actually displaying it ?
Paranoid ambivalent ? Indeterminitely paranoid ? The Correct or Paranoid paradox ?
If he knows he’s playing Crazy Straw with the facts, my intelligence is insulted. If he doesn’t, his “intelligence” is impervious to any insult I could fashion.

And yet we’re not supposed to say Obama’s middle name…
I guess when you don’t have any pride you can say things like this and not be bothered.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden can have Hezbollah kicked out of Lebanon, and Roosevelt broadcasting to the nation on TV in 1929, and walks away whistling.
toby928, it is most definitely not to laugh. These assholes are going to win the White House because the media is flagrantly covering for them and openly smearing their opponents.
VJ,
Go to the transcript as pointed to by Neo (go to the VP not First Pres debate). You’ll see that she didn’t use the word “the” in front of Talibani. Tom and Dionne, the dummies, added it because they needed it to prove how stupid she is. Instead they proved how stupid they are, as well as deceitful.
Don’t you feel silly for not reading the original transcript? Naw. The truth wouldn’t suit your purpose.
Papamas, it goes further. A story in our local rag last week listed the destruction of McCain’s aircraft in the Forrestal fire along with some of his prangs – it was an obvious attempt to make it look like his plane was destroyed by him crashing it!
Unbelievable!
Without victory, the truth no longer matters.
I thought Cecile Dionne did a *great* job with the Titanic sound track.
Ummmmm — what?
I recorded this and put it up on youtube after reading this.

Sounds absolutely Clintonian.

A nice counter-propaganda ad would be stoking up people’s complaints about Palin being dumb on Talabani, waiting a week or two for it to stew while acting defensive, and then hitting out an ad that actually shows Palin saying Maliki and Talabani rather than Maliki and the Talabani.
The best counter-propaganda is when the enemy has saturated the audience with the specific propaganda you are countering. Dan Rather did us all a favor by going whole hog on his propaganda operation, to the extent that almost everybody knew about it, whether we wanted them to or not. When the counter-propaganda hit, he was sunk.
He had a dug a hole and drew an audience that he could no longer get rid of. Not in the dark, at least.
