And this is what he had to say:

In my meetings with folks so far—and most importantly the governor and the AG to Mayor Fry—we didn’t agree on everything. I didn’t expect to agree on anything. I’ve heard many people want to know why we’re talking to people who they don’t consider friends of the administration. Bottom line is you can’t fix problems if you don’t have discussions. I didn’t come to Minnesota for photo ops or headlines. I came here to seek solutions, and that’s what we’re going to do. …

One thing we all agreed on was [that] U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a legitimate law enforcement agency that has a duty to enforce the laws enacted by Congress and keep this community safe.

That right there is already surprising. Sanctuary cities and states ordinarily refuse to cooperate with that endeavor, which indicates that they don’t agree that ICE is legitimate and don’t agree those laws should be enforced. No one is asking local and state governments to deport people, but if ICE is legitimate it follows that a state or city would do its part to neither impede ICE nor to encourage its citizens to do so. That, unfortunately, has not been the case in Minneapolis.

More:

I didn’t ask [Minnesota state and local officials] to be immigration officers. I’m asking them to be cops working with the cops to help us take criminal aliens off the street.

What we did agree upon is not to release public safety threats back into the community and [that] they could be lawfully transferred to ICE.

I’m surprised by that agreement, too. Will it actually occur? Apparently it’s already begun – at least, that’s how I interpret the following:

I will highlight that the Minnesota State Prison System under the Department of Corrections has been honoring ICE detainers, and we appreciate the important collaboration. We’re going to expand upon that. That decision has made Minnesota safer—not only for residents of Minnesota, but for the men and women of law enforcement, not just ICE, all law enforcement. Rather than arresting the same significant public safety threat over and over again, they agreed to work with us to identify those people and remove them.

And this will happen, supposedly:

I’m also pleased to announce I had a very good meeting with Attorney General Ellison, and he has clarified for me that county jails may notify ICE of the release dates of criminal public safety risks so ICE can take custody of them upon release from the jail.

And this makes lots of sense. Again, it should have happened in Minnesota a long time ago, the way it does in cooperating red states:

One agent can arrest one bad guy in the safety and security of a jail where he’s behind the wire. We know he doesn’t have weapons. But when you normally release that public safety threat—illegal alien—back into the community, we have a job to do. We’re going to arrest him. So we’re going to find him. And what happens is now we’ve got to arrest somebody on his turf. He has access to who knows what weapons. Now we’ve got to send the whole team out—cover the back door, cover the front door—for officer safety reasons. Then, because of the hateful rhetoric and the attacks on ICE officers, now we’ve got to send a security team behind the arrest team. So what could have been done with one person in the safety and security of a jail, now we’ve got 15, 16 people out there doing it.

I know that causes stress in the community. So if we get these agreements in place, that means less agents on the street. More agents in the jail means less agents in the street. This is common sense cooperation that allows us to draw down on the number of people we have here.

More [emphasis mine]:

We will conduct targeted enforcement operations. Targeted—what we’ve done for decades. When we hit the streets, we know exactly who we’re looking for [and have a] good idea where we may find them. You have a criminal history. You have their immigration history. A lot of information about this person that we get from numerous databases out there. Targeted, strategic enforcement operations. That’s traditionally been the case, and that’s where we’re going. That’s what we’re going to continue to do and improve upon with the prioritization on public safety threats.

I wonder what really happened behind closed doors. Walz and Frey are currently being investigated and could be charged. Was there, for example, a promise not to charge them if they cooperate?

In other news, Walz has declared he won’t be running for public office again. Big deal; I don’t think he could win a race for dogcatcher right now.

I think Walz loves being in the spotlight again and fancies himself a leftist hero. Just a week or two ago he was in the spotlight for winking at and enabling – and perhaps benefiting from – rampant fraud in his state. Now he gets to change the channel and defy the evil ICE agents.

I can attest to the fact that many people I know buy the story that he’s selling. Some are people who lead with their emotions, but some are very rational. From what they see and hear, ICE is a bunch of violent thugs harming innocent people.

Left and right describe the incident very very differently.

For example, from the right:

Dramatic video purportedly shows the moment an ICE agent opened fire and killed a 37-year-old woman who attempted to barrel her SUV into the officer’s path in Minneapolis Wednesday morning — as the mayor furiously demanded the agency “get the f–k out” of the city.

In the footage being widely circulated on social media from varying angles, ICE officers approach a plum-colored Honda Pilot and order the driver out of the vehicle after she blocked the path of their truck.

As one of the agents attempts to open the door, she quickly throws the car into reverse before trying to speed forward in the direction of another agent in her path. …

President Trump said in a statement that the driver caused the incident, which he said landed the agent in the hospital.

“The woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense,” he said in a post on Truth Social. …

Video taken from another angle showing the incident from further away appears to show the SUV run into the officer who fired the deadly shots as he leaps out of the path. …

DHS assistant secretary for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin said the incident happened while ICE was conducting “targeted operations” when “violent rioters” began blocking the streets.

One of the violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them — an act of domestic terrorism,” she said in an X post.

And from the left:

“They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly: that is bulls—t. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying,” [Mayor Frey] said, pledging a full investigation into the incident.

“To ICE: Get the f—k out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being here is to create some kind of safety and you are doing exactly the opposite.” …

Embattled Minn. Gov. Tim Walz fired back “don’t believe this propaganda machine” and promised the state will conduct “a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.”

People are being whipped up into an anti-ICE frenzy by the left. Whether this woman was one of them remains to be seen, and I certainly don’t know at this point. But I wouldn’t trust anything Frey and Walz say.

Even Walz could read the writing on the wall, although he wasn’t happy about it:

On Monday morning, we learned that Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) is dropping his reelection bid.

Walz released a statement Monday morning confirming reports that he was dropping out of the race and later held a press conference.

During the press conference, he apparently just read his previous statement, and took no questions:

He again accused Republicans and President Donald Trump of exploiting the crisis politically. He again accused the White House of demonizing Somali communities and withholding child care funds.

He again insisted his administration had aggressively tackled fraud, fired bad actors, locked down programs, and put the right people in charge. And he again cast himself as the adult in the room, reluctantly abandoning politics so he could focus on governing.

This clears the way for Amy Klobuchar to run for the office; my guess is that she’ll run and she’ll win:

Klobuchar didn’t comment on her future political plans in a statement Monday. But the senator, commenting on the governor’s move to combat the fraud scandal full time rather than to seek another term in office, said, “Walz made the difficult decision to focus on his job and the challenges facing our state rather than campaigning and running for re-election.”

The senator has won all four of her Senate elections by wide margins, including a nearly 16-point re-election in 2024.

Selfless Tim Walz.

As soon as I saw that the NY Times was focusing on the Minnesota fraud cases, I realized that the Democrats wanted Walz out of the race. On December 1 I wrote:

But still, the [Times’] highlighting of Walz’s role surprised me. My guess is that the Times would like him to refrain from any more participation in national politics, he was such a disaster in 2024. I have no evidence for this; it’s just a hunch.

And of course, because the Times is basically the Democrats’ propaganda organ, that meant that the Democrats wanted Tim out. They got what they wanted.

It is astounding to me that Walz came fairly close to becoming VP.

Trump called Tim Walz a “retard,” and Walz is understandably miffed:

TIM WALZ says that people are driving by his house and using the term ‘retard.’

“This creates danger… we know how these things go, they start with taunts, they turn to violence.”

Well no, Tim. The term “retard” is rude, but doesn’t usually lead to any violence – except, perhaps, in Nazi Germany, where they killed disabled people as “life unworthy of life.”

In this country, however, calling someone “Nazi” or “Fascist,” as the left is inclined to do, is more likely to lead to violence against the person so labeled. And in fact, as luck would have it, Walz himself has used terms like that for people on the right, or even for law enforcement. For example, here he called ICE agents “modern-day Gestapo” (he mispronounced the word, but it was clear that’s what he meant). And here’s some of Walz’s oh-so-gentle rhetoric about Trump:

2024 VP Democratic candidate Tim Walz is still giving interviews and talks. Here’s a report on his participation in a Harvard Kennedy School forum on Monday night:

Walz said Harris chose him, in part, because, “I could code talk to White guys watching football, fixing their truck” and “put them at ease.” The Minnesota governor described himself as the “permission structure” for White men from rural America to vote for Democrats.

That’s a good reminder of how the Harris/Walz ticket was one of the best demonstrations of the fact that racial and “gender” identity politics have swallowed the Democratic Party. After all, Harris was chosen because she’s a black woman – and it’s not just me saying that, it was Biden who explicitly said it. Turns out that wasn’t enough to win. And Walz is saying he was chosen because he’s some sort of rural macho white guy and therefore could talk the language of rural macho white guys, all while not talking their language at all. People who say “code talk” and “permission structure” aren’t likely to appeal much to that particular demographic.

Harris was and is a train wreck. Walz was and is a train wreck. It is shocking that they got as many votes as they did.

The selection of Tim Walz for her VP pick was one of Harris’ biggest mistakes in her presidential run – and that’s saying something, because she made a lot of big mistakes. But anyone who had ever paid attention to Walz previously knew he had a terrible record during the Minneapolis riots and has no real appeal on a gut level as a politician.

For me, one of his most cringe-worthy poses was his attempt to project a macho “regular guy” vibe. And he’s still trying:

Since faceplanting as Kamala Harris’ running mate, the Minnesota governor has been holding rallies and making the media rounds in a desperate attempt to boost his stock for a 2028 presidential run.

Here’s Tim:

Tim Walz on Trump supporters: "I think I can kick most of their ass" pic.twitter.com/CHstXUb7ng

— End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) March 18, 2025

How can a person be that tone deaf? Someone should tell him that what works in Minnesota doesn’t necessarily work on a national level.

Kamala Harris may be running for the governorship of California. One of her problems has been that what works in California doesn’t necessarily work on a national level. So maybe retreating to the state level is a good idea for her. I doubt she’ll run, though, unless pretty much assured she’ll win the Democratic primary, which is tantamount to winning the election in California.

“Sen. Vance became a media darling. He wrote a book about the place he grew up. But the premise was trashing that place he grew up rather than lifting it up,” Walz said on Tuesday of the Republican vice presidential hopeful, adding, “This guy is a venture capitalist cosplaying as a cowboy or something.”

“I don’t even know what a venture capitalist does most of the time!” he then yelled.

Social media reacted with quips and astonishment to Walz’s comments about the term “venture capitalist,” which regards one who invests in a startup business venture.

“Tampon Tim be like ‘vote for me. JD Vance is smart and I’m an idiot,’” a social media user reacted on X.

Walz is going for the Idiocracy vote. Maybe it’s a rather large bloc these days, alas.

Now Chris Rufo picks up on allegations that there was quite a bit of plagiarism in a book written by Kamala Harris with a co-author:

At the beginning of Harris’s political career, in the run-up to her campaign to serve as California’s attorney general, she and co-author Joan O’C Hamilton published a small volume, entitled Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer. The book helped to establish her credibility on criminal-justice issues.

However, according to Stefan Weber, a famed Austrian “plagiarism hunter” who has taken down politicians in the German-speaking world, Harris’s book contains more than a dozen “vicious plagiarism fragments.” Some of the passages he highlighted appear to contain minor transgressions—reproducing small sections of text; insufficient paraphrasing—but others seem to reflect more serious infractions, similar in severity to those found in Harvard president Claudine Gay’s doctoral thesis. (Harris did not respond to a request for comment.)

I doubt this will hurt her with anyone already planning to vote for her. And the fact that there is already a co-author dilutes the charges, as well.

There’s so much news on Harris and Walz every day that there’s no way I can cover it adequately, but suffice to say that the gist of it is that it’s going poorly for them. Just to take one example: Walz’s efforts to come across as a macho hunter (see this) – an effort that, to coin a phrase, has backfired. It puzzles me that anyone would think it a good approach in the first place, though. Do people really look at a photo of a person pheasant hunting and think, “wow, I hunt pheasants too, I think I’ll vote for this guy!”?

Along those lines we have this ridiculous ad. Was it meant to be funny, or what? I vote for “what”:

I’ve seen some very funny takedowns of it, and they’re all maximally unwoke. The ad strikes me as being tongue-in-cheek, but even if that’s true it falls incredibly flat. The tone is so off-putting and strange that it’s in the uncanny valley. Who on earth is this ad appealing to?

Nevertheless I counsel against false confidence. I have no idea who will win this election; about half of America would vote for a piece of seaweed if it was running against Donald Trump. Plus, there’s “rigging” and vulnerable voting security. But I must say that I’ve never seen a worse election campaign than that of Harris/Walz.

Walz said the quiet part out loud:

“I think all of us know, the Electoral College needs to go. We need a national popular vote,” Walz said Tuesday during a campaign fundraiser at the home of Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Walz made similar comments at an earlier fundraiser in Seattle, as well.

While running for president in 2019, Harris said she was “open” to the idea of abolishing the Electoral College.

That seems like it’s on the Democrats’ agenda, although ordinarily it would take a constitutional amendment. There’s also the The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which wouldn’t abolish the Electoral College but would get around it and make the national popular vote supreme, and would have the advantage (if SCOTUS found it be constitutional, which is doubtful in the present court) of not requiring an amendment to be implemented.

However, much as Walz and Harris and their supporters might long for the national popular vote to be ascendant, they seem to have walked back overt statements of that sort:

Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, remained silent Thursday on whether he still supports eliminating the Electoral College, after the Harris campaign insisted his position did not reflect that of the campaign’s. …

… [A]ccording to campaign officials pressed on the issue following Walz’s remarks, eliminating the Electoral College in favor of a national popular vote is not an official position of Harris’ current campaign.

And here’s how they tried to undo what Walz said:

“Governor Walz believes that every vote matters in the Electoral College and he is honored to be traveling the country and battleground states working to earn support for the Harris-Walz ticket,” a Harris campaign spokesperson said in a statement sent to select media outlets like CNN and USA Today. “He was commenting to a crowd of strong supporters about how the campaign is built to win 270 electoral votes. And, he was thanking them for their support that is helping fund those efforts.”

That doesn’t fit what he said.

And let’s hear from demagogue Jamie Raskin:

Just last month, Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin suggested there could be deadly consequences for Americans if the Electoral College was not done away with. Raskin said a national popular vote was a far better option than the current “convoluted, antique, obsolete system from the 18th century, which these days can get you killed as nearly it did on Jan. 6, 2021.”

The article also mentions that Walz signed a bill that made his state of Minnesota a party to The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. That seems to be another indication of wishing to override the Electoral College, which is seen as an impediment to Democrat power.

I wonder, though, if abolishing the Electoral College outright would be a question of “be careful what you wish for.” In states such as California, where the Electoral College guarantees that all the electors will vote for the Democrat because the Democrat always wins the state, there probably are many people who would otherwise vote for Republicans but who just don’t bother. Those people might be more energized to get to the polls and vote if the Electoral College were to be eliminated and they would be contributing to a national popular vote that would determine the winner.
