Stage four is more serious for Canada. The jobs report came out. They’ve lost 41,000 jobs just in one week of the tariff war. We created 160,000 in August. It’s gonna get worse for Canada.

We have, as I said, nine times the population, 13 times the nominal GDP, and Canada is entirely reliant. Seventy-five percent of it is reliant. I don’t say that out of triumphalism or boasting, but in sadness for Canada. I don’t know what they’re doing.

Mr. Carney, who had three passports before he was prime minister, a Canadian, a British, and an Irish. He was the epitome of a globalist, and he wasn’t a nationalist. So his immigration, his energy, his defense policy, and his trade policy were all globalist. They were all European-style, and they didn’t realize or properly exploit the natural gifts of Canada. …

[Carney has whipped up anti-American feeling] because he did not want, as I said in stage three, he didn’t want an autonomous Alberta and an autonomous Quebec, and those referenda are coming up.

More importantly, he’s now interfering in U.S. internal midterm politics. …

He does not know what he’s doing. He’s living in a fantasy house. …

He and the Chinese are the only two countries that issued counter tariffs. People in Europe love what he’s doing, but not one of them would follow his example. He’s got his neck out, and the fate of 41 million Canadians depends on him being successful, and he’s gonna fail because the United States is saying, “This is a new world. We’re not gonna subsidize everybody’s defense and run up $200 billion deficits with one neighbor, Mexico, and $50 billion to $60 billion with our northern neighbor and call it a free trade zone.”

Then again, maybe he’s counting on the left taking control of the US and doing a switcheroo.

That’s “just” as in “social justice” or what Thomas Sowell called “cosmic justice.” I guess the Canadian left just isn’t satisfied with the present status quo, nor is Obama.

He also met with PM Carney, which – according to Newsweek – has MAGA “seething” (rather than pouncing, as is customary).

Carney wrote:

“Welcome back to Canada, President @BarackObama,” Carney wrote. “Thank you for joining us in Toronto for important conversations on how we can build a better and more just future—and empower more people to build with us.”

There’s that “just” business again.

I’m not seething about this; there are plenty of more seethable things around, vying for attention. But I became curious as to whether, if Obama became a Canadian citizen, he could run for PM? The answer is “yes,” because Canada has no “natural born citizen” requirement.

By the way, I’ve never thought Obama was anything but a “natural born citizen” of the US. When he was running for office, there were a lot of discussions here on the subject, so I’m not going to go into it again now. I’ll just add that the whole controversy makes me think of Macbeth – the prophecy that Macbeth couldn’t be defeated by anyone “of woman born,” and then the revelation of the fact that Macduff was “from his mother’s womb untimely ripped.”

The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia on Sunday all recognized a putative Palestinian state, acting amid Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza.

The synchronized announcements, coming within minutes of each other, defied opposition from the American and Israeli governments, which said such a move would be a reward for terrorism.

“Since 1947, it has been the policy of every Canadian government to support a two-state solution for lasting peace in the Middle East,” read a written statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “This envisioned the creation of a sovereign, democratic and viable State of Palestine, building its future in peace and security alongside the State of Israel.

“Hamas has terrorized the people of Israel and oppressed the people of Gaza, wreaking horrific suffering,” the statement continued. “It is imperative that Hamas release all hostages, fully disarm and play no role in the future governance of Palestine. Hamas has stolen from the Palestinian people, cheated them of their life and liberty, and can in no way dictate their future.

“The current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established. … It is in this context that Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel,” Carney said.

Delusional in so many ways. The two-state solution was a dream that was worth pursuing, but it has become abundantly clear that the Palestinians don’t support it and that it is now a mere fantasy. You can’t have a two-state solution when one state wants to obliterate the other.

And a country such as Canada can say all it wants that it is imperative that Hamas release all hostages, fully disarm, and play no future role in “Palestine.” Empty blather. What are you going to do to make that happen, Carney? Reward them with a recognized state – at present, when they have steadfastly refused to do any such things (au contraire) and have toyed with useful idiots such as you?

But perhaps the worst part of Carney’s message was this slander:

The current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established.

Oh, if only there was no Netanyahu and his administration, working so hard to prevent a glorious and peacefully co-existing Palestinian state that the Palestinians have tried so hard to establish, the dream of peace would be realized. Either Carney knows zero about the history of the area or is lying in order to placate his constituents (among them quite a few local Muslims; Canada was about 5% Muslim in 2021 and that percentage has probably only increased since then, whereas its Jewish population is about 1%) – or he’s both ignorant and pandering.

I vote for both. There may be a dose of anti-Semitism thrown in there as well. A toxic brew.

This is a somewhat new phenomenon in recent years; I’ve lived in New England for a long time and have only noticed the problem for maybe five or ten years. If one does research on why this is happening more often – as I have – what emerges in each article is climate change, climate change, climate change, in the form of more drought and heat.

Well, perhaps. But if so, wouldn’t there also be more wildfires in New England itself? I don’t see evidence of that.

Articles about Canadian wildfires also mention arson, and I wonder if that’s a larger part of the picture than we know. Also lightning strikes, but I don’t see why that would be increasing. There’s also forestry: less logging, more fires? It’s hard to get objective data on this – at least, in the time I tried to research the issue in order to write this piece, every single article I found appeared to have a bias of some type (for example, this one).

Meanwhile, the haze continues …

We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to trade with, including the fact that they have charged our farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on dairy products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American technology companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our country. They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Alberta doesn’t belong in this Canada.

That’s not treason. It’s not even radical. It’s a simple observation of cultural, economic, and political reality — a reality growing starker by the year. Albertans have known for decades that something is deeply broken in the Confederation they were born into. But it’s only recently, as Ottawa’s indifference curdled into hostility, that many have begun asking the inevitable question: What if we left?

Not just to form a new nation. But to join one that already reflects their values. A nation that respects liberty, rewards hard work, and doesn’t treat resource-producing states or provinces like piggy banks and political afterthoughts. A nation that — however imperfect — still believes in the rule of law, in constitutional government, and in the right of free people to govern themselves.

That nation is not Canada. That nation is the United States.

From the moment Alberta entered Confederation in 1905, it was treated as an afterthought — an imperial holding ruled from the East. The so-called “national interest” always seemed to mean Quebec’s interest. And while Alberta built the pipelines, powered the economy, and filled the federal coffers, Ottawa wielded its power like a colonial governor, redistributing wealth and writing laws with no regard for the West’s values or prosperity. …

In 1998, Canada’s Supreme Court issued its landmark Secession Reference. The Court ruled that if a province were to vote clearly and decisively for independence, the federal government would be constitutionally obligated to enter into negotiations.

The union, in other words, rests on consent — and consent can be withdrawn.

The Liberal victory didn’t give the Liberal Party a majority, however:

As the votes were counted through the night, the Liberals were just shy of a majority government, which would mean the governing party would need the support of what is left of the NDP and the Quebec sovereigntist Bloc Québécois party.

On a stage surrounded by dozens of supporters early Tuesday, Carney thanked Poilievre to a decidedly muted response from his supporters before turning a laser focus on Trump.

“America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,” Carney said.

“These are not these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, that will never, ever happen. But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed,” he said.

You can see why I say that Trump’s rhetoric and actions became a helpful issue for the Liberals. I’m not sure what that “decidedly muted response” is about, but perhaps there is already some buyers’ remorse, just as there is in Britain for Starmer.

The losing Conservative, Poilievre, had this to say:

“We got the highest share vote our party has received since 1988,” Poilievre added. “We didn’t quite get over the finish line, yet we know that change is needed. But change is hard to come by. It takes time.”

I’m not sure what it would take, but certainly not just time.

More insight into the election can be found in the Edmonton Journal, a Canadian paper based in Alberta (probably the most conservative area of Canada). The situation seems to have been somewhat like what happened in France and in Britain, in that the left was uncharacteristically united in order to stop the right:

Poilievre led his Conservative Party to its greatest height ever, at least if you go by popular vote. Stephen Harper’s CPC peaked at 39.6 per cent in the 2011 election. But more than 42 per cent of Canadians voted for Poilievre’s CPC in this 2025 general election.

But there was just one problem. For the first time since it formed in 2003, the CPC faced a largely united left-of-centre, with Mark Carney’s Liberals getting roughly 43 per cent of the vote.

That result will give the Liberals roughly 160 seats to 150 for the CPC, not enough for a Liberal majority, but enough to shake Alberta politics, bringing on calls for separation from angry Albertans …

The author of the piece seems to agree that Canada is basically a liberal/left nation – and that if that segment of the populace unites, the right will not be able to win. In this case, the more leftist party than the Liberals united with the Liberals to defeat the Conservatives. However, even the Conservatives tried to distance themselves from Trump:

It wasn’t until former [Conservative Party] leader Stephen Harper said he’d rather burn Canada to the ground than give an inch to the blowhard Trump that the CPC found its own footing. By then, it was too late. Carney had won over Canada’s gigantic anti-Trump faction with trumped-up fears that Trump was going to steal our land and our water.

Wow, talk about NeverTrumpers! “Burn Canada to the ground” – that’s quite an extraordinary statement from Harper. But it shows the depth of how much Trump’s recent threats are detested in Canada, even by the supposed right.

The Conservative Party had a big lead in polls…until President Donald Trump started his tariff talks and annexing Canada.

“In an Angus Reid Institute poll released on Dec. 30, the Conservatives were in super-majority territory with 45% support, compared to the Liberals at 11%. The results of a poll released on Saturday had the Liberals at 44% with a four-point lead over the Conservatives at 40%.”

Of course, are the polls correct? I certainly don’t know. But it does seem like an oddly fickle response to make Trump’s bluster the deciding factor, and it’s not as though the Conservative candidate is saying he wants Canada to become part of the US. It also seems to me like the country that elected Trudeau over and over and over isn’t suddenly becoming overwhelmingly conservative

The extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, constitutes a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

Until the crisis is alleviated, President Donald J. Trump is implementing a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% additional tariff on imports from China. Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10% tariff.

President Trump is taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.

I guess whatever they did initially in response to the earlier threat of tariffs by Trump didn’t work, and now he’s doing this.

Canada has retaliated with tariffs of its own:

Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that in response to unjustified U.S. tariffs, the Government of Canada is moving forward with 25 per cent tariffs on $155 billion worth of imported goods, beginning immediately with a list of goods worth $30 billion. The scope of the Canadian counter tariffs will be increased to $155 billion if the current U.S. tariffs are maintained. The scope could also be increased if new tariffs are imposed. This was not the outcome Canada hoped for – but we must respond in order to protect our economy and Canadian jobs.

The first phase of Canada’s response includes tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the U.S., effective as of 12:01 a.m., March 4, 2025. The list includes products such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and certain pulp and paper products.

Minister LeBlanc also announced that, should the U.S. continue to apply unjustified tariffs on Canada, the government intends to impose additional countermeasures on $125 billion in imports from the U.S., drawing from a list of goods open for a 21-day comment period, which would bring the scope of countermeasures to a total of $155 billion worth of products. The list includes products such as electric vehicles, fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy, electronics, steel, aluminum, trucks, and buses.

It goes on.

I’ve said before that I don’t really understand this tariff business, especially in regard to Canada. Does Trump really think that this will cause Canada to get tougher about fentanyl? That doesn’t seem to be the way it’s going at the moment.

My gut feeling is that Trump wants to do this anyway, and although he’s sincere about wanting a reduction in fentanyl importation his real goal is that he thinks the tariffs will serve to further protect American businesses. His actions seem overly broad to me and needlessly antagonistic, and I don’t think they will accomplish his goals. But I’m open to being talked out of that notion. Help me out here, folks.

Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.

Working together on some goals that should be obvious common goals – that’s what I like to see.

And from Sheinbaum in Mexico:

We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements:

1. Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl.

2. The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.

3. Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.

4. They are pausing tariffs for one month from now.

Let’s hear it for Team North America. Well, not all of North America is on board, of course, but quite a bit. I also noticed, when I looked up the physical boundaries of North America, that Greenland is included. Hmmm.
