AesopFan asked the very same question that has been resounding in my brain: If they hate the Jews so much, why do they want to claim their identity? “They’re not real Jews; WE’RE the real Jews!” seems like psychotic thinking. I suppose everybody wants to be “chosen,” like siblings squabbling over a parent’s affections. Fratricide often results although parricide is certainly not to be ruled out. If you want a Biblical prototype of this phenomenon, read Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son, but read it all the way through. After the father and prodigal are reunited, the faithful son becomes jealous and complains and is corrected by the father who reminds him that he has been in the father’s house all along and “everything I have is yours.” Unfortunately, Jesus stops there and never tells us whether the faithful son realizes that he has misjudged the situation, allowing us to come to our own conclusion. I suppose it is inherent in our fallen human nature to want to be the sole heir of one’s father’s estate rather than to share it with one’s siblings, never once stopping to realize that there is no limit to the bounty available in The Father’s house.

There are a number of reasons posited for Jew-ate. Sowell’s “minority middleman” is a distinct ethnic group which is the face of the larger economy which wants everybody’s money. Any group in that slot–Chinese in Southeast Asia, Indians in east Africa, Jews in the west, will be resented.

In “why the jews”, Prager and Telushkin suggest that the Jews are better at sticking to the Ten Commandments than their surrounding society(ies) and , “stick together” and all the other things and are resented for that reason. Plus they have money, or at least those who have money have money. Those who don’t aren’t visible or something.

How about this? if you hate Israel as you do the US because you hate western liberal, free, democracies which defend themselves against totalitarians who have good marketing, then you must hate Jews, since they’re all over Israel. You could look it up. And thus, Jews anyplace else, including here.

I’ve seen this coming for decades. When I moved to San Francisco at the age of 20 in the early 70s I was a hippie peacenik. Within a decade I began to smell the antisemitism of the San Francisco left. At the time I was still voting lib Democrat and dismissed it as an outlier – I knew that SF was way to the left of the country and didn’t associate it with the mainstream national party. It did disabuse me though of the notion that Jew-hatred was mostly a phenomenon of the right and paved the way for my later political change, which took place for many other reasons but this was a key enabler. I think unfortunately the persistence of leftist politics among American Jews is due to this misconception (antisemitism == right wing) though by now it takes a huge dose of denial to still believe it.
