om, I have absolutely no idea as to the level of training the ICE Agents receive. My experience is with local and State law enforcement. Now, I firmly believe that Pretti is an idiot for taking a gun to that protest. What was he thinking? That he’d have a gunfight with ICE? I believe that every American has the right to be armed, but as with all rights there are responsibilities. Getting into a fight with Federal Agents while carrying a firearm is not smart. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Training is always the easy second guess and no matter what happens you can always say they needed more training. But in life to be adequately trained, equipped, and rested is better than not. Still, the enemy has a plan and objective to defeat you.

I don’t know their level of training and don’t assume it was deficient.

I don’t see premeditated desire to kill or even shoot Mr. Pretti in any of the video footage. What I do see is a scrum as CBI pointed out and what I feel is a lack of communication-in the moment. It’s my understanding that Gun, Gun, Gun! Is called when a gun is seen on a suspect, not after the gun is removed. If the Agent had yelled “I’ve got his gun” instead, a different outcome may have happened.
This is the tip of an iceberg that every Law enforcement agency has. Lack of training. Training and refresher training is expensive and invisible. Money spent on equipment can be seen and pointed to.
huxley brought up Kent State which might be another case of lack of training. It’s my understanding that the Guardsmen were ordered to fire over the heads of the protesters in front. Forgetting or not realizing that bullets have to come down somewhere. I see many of these deaths as accidents. The death of the woman in Charlottesville, a heart attack brought on by an accident caused by someone trying to get away. All the deaths on J6, except Ashley Babbitt were accidental and her death may also be due to lack of training. No one in law enforcement goes into a confrontation looking to kill anyone.

Barry M, I second JJ’s kudos on the Hirsi Ali article. And your phrase citing her “intelligence and eloquence” describes her abilities and contribution to our nation and culture and situation better than the language I might have found. Just an amazing person, obvious even just from reading her soundly written prose.

I would add an observation: once you’re in a fighting melee, all bets are off. Most people–law enforcement, military, insurgents, etc.–can *not* make fully rational and detailed observations about anything. Field of vision narrows, hearing reduces, adrenaline takes over. Once a person starts shooting, it is also not uncommon for him to cease only when out of ammunition.

Separate comment: I’ve had about a half-dozen encounters with law enforcement while I was armed with a handgun, either concealed or openly. (I’m not including times when I also had a long gun while hunting.) I never had a problem. I was careful to use common sense (e.g., hands in view, no threatening moves, talk with and obey the officer(s), and the like). In my opinion, those in charge of Pretti’s insurgency training were setting him up to be at risk of getting shot–hoping for their own anti-ICE’s version of Horst Wessel.
