Hi, Neo,

While I was surfing the web, I saw this 1968 clip of 2/3 of the BeeGees on the Dating Game and thought of you. ;)

Is it me or do the bachelorette’s questions seem more off the wall than usual?

huxley, interesting. The Venn diagram intersection between chemistry and English literature is not a very thick wedge, I think.

Rufus, I can see why that headline would have had some shock power! Indiana is not, after all, especially known for its forest expanses.

And yes, happy August to all.

Degree and certificate programs in state schools should be drawn from a glossary enacted by the state legislature. Concentrations within degree programs should likewise. In order to establish one, the board of trustees of an institution would have to make a formal application to the state board of regents. In re particular programs in the glossary, the state board would designate 1-3 institutions where such a program would be offered w/o regard to those enrolling. At other institutions, the program would be subject to periodic reviews by the state auditor, who could authoritatively close undersubscribed programs.

The other day I ran into a young café friend, whom I hadn't seen for a while. She was going for a Ph.D in English Lit. She is bright, articulate, attractive and knew her stuff. If anyone could make it with that degree, I would have bet on her.

So I asked her what she was up to. She's now teaching high school chemistry. Fortunately she was pre-med before she switched to following her bliss.

I do not envy twenty-somethings trying to navigate today's world.

Re: Indiana degree programs

Rufus, Miguel cervantes:

I checked that with Chat, which tells me the number is closer to 2200 programs. However those 2200 are spread over all degrees from associate to doctoral programs.

Nonetheless that is still a lot of programs. Chat says it includes ones such as:
______________________________

* B.S. in Sustainable Food Systems
* B.A. in Music Business and Entrepreneurship
* M.S. in Data Science for Public Good
* Ph.D. in Human-Centered Computing
______________________________

And I used to wonder what a degree in Communication was.

I think higher ed is due for some creative destruction.

This headline stunned me: https://jamesgmartin.center/2025/08/hoosier-state-slash-and-burn/

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Indiana’s public-university-system leadership, has announced that the state’s public colleges are responding to a new state law by eliminating or merging more than 400 degree programs on the different university campuses, about 20 percent of the total number of degrees offered.

I wouldn't have guessed there were even 400 degrees offered in total. 20% means there are about 8,000 unique degrees?!

How many unique colleges are there in the University system; LAS, Education, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Medicine? Did I miss any? Six colleges. That's over 1,000 unique degrees within each? LAS has to lead the list with maybe 10x the next highest total, but how do you get to 8,000?
