thats the thing that occurs to me, how often do people make that sort of elementary mistake, you need the flaps extend to gain altitude, of course lowered landing gear would make it harder to maintain altitude,

Since you need one hand for the wheel/stick, both those controls have to be available to the other hand.

After the reported 8200 hours, there’d be no confusion and not even any reason to think about what you’re doing. I suspect, then, some kind of serious distraction.

The views I have seen show the flaps on the right of the throttles (move forward for 0 flaps) and the gear lever on the left of the throttles (move back to retract gear). If this is correct then wrong handle and wrong direction of movement.

Saw a theory: pilot grabbed wrong control and retracted the flaps instead of the landing gear.
How similar are the controls and are they placed near each other.

An old multi decades Brit working on Voeung aircraft was interviewed on CNN late night.

His opinion? Echoes the flap issue (above) and adds that the wjeels are down, when they should be up 5-15 seconds after liftoff.

Thus, this valuable visual video evidence, combined with the fact that the tail section survived intact from the crash, since here’s where the avionics and black box are located, means that a crash cause ought to arrive quickly.

Somerhing good to come from the massive tragedy.

This one we definitely have to wait for the investigation. It clearly stalls and pancakes in indicating insufficient lift or thrust or both. I’ve seen analysis of the video that includes an odd buzzing and there is speculation that the RAT (Ram Air Turbine) deployed which is an emergency device to provide electrical power for instruments and hydraulics in the case of a dual engine failure. Dual engine failures are unusual and the surviving passengers loud bang might be an engine failure, but the video shows no obvious hints. Given it was loaded for a flight to the UK the amount of fuel it had pretty much doomed it on crash.
