Don’t you know that these journalists spend four years in college to learn how to lie with plausible deniability? I’m impressed. (not) When I was in college, we used to refer to Huntley and Brinkley as hunkley and Bunkley and ridicule them. I was working in Brazil on a government contract and had gone into Sao Paulo one weekend and later was asked if I saw the riots. I hadn’t seen any riots, but my friend had a copy of Time or Newsweek with a story and pictures about the riots, I borrowed it and asked a friend if he knew where the pictures were from and he said they were from the riots in Argentina about two years ago. Journalists just make things up.

Joan Didion could be called an anti-journalist. Yes, she was there to get her stories and get paid, but for her the 60s became a personal crisis in which her faith that there was a “story,” a coherent objective narrative, collapsed.

I couldn’t find a link for it, but I recall that a decade-15 years back, a famous journalist was being interviewed for jury duty. She made a comment to the effect that journalists were objective, were truth-seekers and/or truth-tellers. The room of prospective jurors broke out in laughter.

The journalist said that was one of her most humiliating experiences.
