So she was a Goldwater Republican before joining the Post? Or at least her family was. According to the NYT obit of Bradlee, he was still married when the affair with Quinn began, initiated by her with anonymous flirtatious messages, while she was already a Style reporter. I'm suspicious of that story. The one quoted above about her getting hired with no experience sounds more like the casting couch. Though perhaps both are true: She slept her way into the job, which resulted in some feelings for the old man, or at least for his power and wealth. In any case, her values seem . . . flexible.

This suggestion is by no means original, but it makes more and more sense every year.

Move the seat of government to the exact geographical center of the United States. I think it's somewhere in Nebraska. President has to live there, Congress has to meet there. Executive agencies can HQ there, but they should be situated differently for such a vast country. Turn Washington D.C. into just a large museum. People don't relocate, businesses still run there, and it's still a city. Remove the ban on buildings taller than the Capitol so it can grow upward instead of spread.

The same thing that happened to Washington happens in Nebraska, but it takes a few decades to really take root, and make sure to zone the new place so it takes even longer. When the new seat of government becomes as insular and depraved as D.C., move it again, this time to southern Montana.

Let old money biddies like Sally Quinn have their city, but take away the power. See how long their bubble lasts then.

"This is a city where people seek and, if it all goes well for them, wield power." That tells you everything you need to know about those people--no mention of service to the nation, or serving constituents, or fealty to the Constitution, just power.

This culture she describes, is it really the culture of all establishment Dems or more the culture of the elderly clingers-on to their positions and power? Quinn is in her 80's. Pelosi is in her 80's. Schumer is 75, going on 110. Several 80+ lifer Dem legislators have been ousted because their faculties were long gone "before anyone noticed." We all watched what happened with Biden. I'm sensing a trend here. The younger Dems who become prominent in the media are all wack-a-doodle, and don't seem to really be getting anywhere deeper within the establishment. Of course, I don't know what goes on in those rumored back-room/basement gatherings -- what we see could all be window-dressing. But I'm left with the question: is Quinn's sadness just nostalgia?

I remember when the new republic was a serious paper (when mike kelly was editor) before them when they published 'no exit' and the bell curve series since then chris hughes bought it and it became one of the spokes of the journolist and it has become an implacable spreader of agitprop

I thought wieseltier was serious then not so much afterwards
