I remember when it first hit MTV. I rushed out and bought the album.
The video is not exotic, but interesting. The first half of the song is pretty good, but then second half has a bit of funk, then an ethereal psychedelic interlude, and big quasi-religious choir vocal finish. Wild stuff.

LoFan John, Nana Mouskouri is a marvel, with a voice for the ages. I haven’t yet heard her sing Paxton’s song, but I have heard her cover a fair number of songs. I think she could turn a restaurant menu into a great song.

Gringo: I also liked the Waggoner/Parton duet. A couple of years later I was astonished to hear the song in French. A student from Cote D’Ivoire was playing a record by a Greek singer, Nana Mouskouri, who did a pretty straight cover with a lovely voice. Small world.

Everyone is way ahead of me, the only “Gloria” is the one written by Van Morrison for his band Them. Also had a great garage band cover by The Shadows of Knight.

Born of a Catholic father and Protestant mother, Bono is a complicated Christian.

He has received Holy Communion at a Catholic Mass. Which is a big deal, if one is keeping score. Not that I am.

I don’t think that’s a loose connection at all, Lee Also. Not musically but lyrically. The U2 song uses not only the word “gloria” but parts of the entire Latin liturgical phrase.

Let’s just toss in another “Gloria” song that’s different still, U2’s “Gloria” from their album “October.” I still like it. It’s not a cover of the two discussed so far, but apparently the Van Morrison one was an influence. But it is a religious song, not about a woman.

And it’s got Latin in it, so I guess one can almost find a connection to the Beethoven one. But that a VERY loose connection.
