This was supposed to be a response to the two white men honored by statures in Times Square: George M. Cohan, songwriter and showman, and Father Francis Duffy, chaplain and decorated war hero. The usual response would have been to find a woman or an African-American who had similar achievements and erect a statue to her or him. This generic statue doesn’t say much for our era. Is it really enough to be black and a woman and look askance at the white men? Do actual achievements count for nothing?

That was my reaction also. It’s not her weight, it’s her attitude. I find it insulting. It’s akin to a 12′ sculpture of the stereotypical image of a “Karen,” or the image of Melissa Click that has become an online meme.

Why would an artist choose to use such a large medium (12′) to depict a woman in such a pose? It’s insulting and rude.

Seward Johnson operated a workshop in New Jersey which produced trompe l’oeil sculptures for public places. A park bench would be decorated with a sculpture of a man reading a newspaper, &c. Some of them are more appealing than others. (Robert Hughes despised Johnson and his work, so you know it has some value). I think they were meant to be whimsical, not aggressive.

Sgt. Mom: that was exactly my reaction. I happened to have seen just such a video within the previous day or so of seeing the statue, and the connection made itself pretty insistently. I wonder how many people reacted that way. If many, the statue may have had the opposite of its intended effect.
