OTOH, given that neither Republicans nor Democrats ever expected Israel to go after Iran directly, I think it’s more of an unanticipated consequence in this case.

If Hezbollah had 100K modest missiles and only half are found or destroyed so far, that still presents a potential problem for Israel. Following David P. Goldman, some of these wars only end when 30% of three generations of combatants are killed.

Makes me wonder if some folks aren’t pushing for these nondomestic wars just to see how their “toys” work.

@ Brian E – as of 6/14/2024 Russia had “One S-500 Air-Defense System” in Crimea, and that may have already been destroyed by Ukrainians.

Don’t expect great results. The S-500, as it exists right now, is a modest improvement over the older S-400. Lately, Ukraine’s ATACMS have been taking out S-400 batteries once a month or so—steadily chipping away at the Russian air force’s pre-war inventory of around 50 such batteries.

Russia has developed the S-500, meant to defend against stealth aircraft. They have just deployed a few batteries in Crimea, I have read.

I suspect that a quick succession of MOPs (Massive Ordinance Penetrators) could first penetrate, then destroy, and finally seal up a deep-underground nuclear production site. That would require the use of B-2s, which would require all serious air defense be eliminated, which is exactly what the IDF has just done.
