His wife had been burned to death in a fire a couple of years earlier and later he learned that his oldest son who had joined the Union army against his will had been seriously wounded in battle. Hence the despairing line “ hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men”. Yet it ends with the hopeful “God is dead nor doth he sleep with peace on earth good will to men.” A beautiful and hopeful song.
