Currently visiting one of the higher CoL states (MA) in a high CoL region (the northeast). Unfortunately, NH–a once-affordable destination state for refugees from Massachusetts–is also above the baseline. My now-home state–AL–is well below the CoL baseline, along with Kansas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi.

Valid points. We expect mid 20s lows this weekend, and I did see a few flakes here in JAX late last January. If that’s the extent of “winter” here, I’m happy. And your correct of CoL compared to CT; not sure about the rest of the country. I do know that we have saved about $10k a year by moving here based on just taxes and savings on energy costs.

physicsguy: re snow: never say never. We do see dips below freezing at times. I recall Bay Hill Classic golf tournament reached 35 degrees in mid March several decades ago. And one Jan. we went to Epcot because our pipes had frozen, where the landscaping crews had already cleared out many plant beds to remove unsightly damaged plants.

And CoL: let’s say “relative CoL”, as FL better than Conn. but usually survey’s show FL to be around 100-102% of national average.

Thanks for this reminder. I always consider December 21st the first day of summer for this very reason.

Living in the Hudson Highlands of NY, it makes the winter easier to bear.

Ah yes — lengthening days. Even with the long dark nights that are ours for the next several months, we can look forward to tomorrow being less dark and the eventual arrival of warm days.

I hate winter, no use for snow it only makes we work to remove it. And don’t like cold .
