I was curious to see how Tony and UPW have changed since 2006.

UPW has gotten huge — about 10,000 participants vs the 2,000-3,000 I recall. Tony has kept the prices the same — $500-$1500 depending on the seating. (D. and I were in the cheap seats.) UPW is an intro program and the later programs have gone up ~40%. Not bad.

UPW has pretty much the same format. Tony has updated the music and added refinements to the content. He’s using different stories to illustrate his points.

Tony has been buffeted by recent cultural changes. He apologized for suggesting #MeToo was a victim position and not entirely healthy. He made an appeal against racism based on George Floyd’s death. He had to bow to Covid regulations, put his big public events on hold and move to virtual for those years.

Happily, at UPW I saw only two masks and there was no social distancing. However, the usual hugs have been replaced, mostly, by high-fives. Still, occasionally, we were told to hug five other participants.

Tony, then and now, mostly avoids politics. However, to the extent he addressed issues, it was against the current tide. He conceded Trump was too often driven by ego and significance, but defended Trump as a good man with a good family and good intentions. (Tony knows Trump personally. It seems Tony knows just about everybody.)

Tony believes social media could connect us, but has been a disaster because it allows some to attack others safely behind a keyboard without consequences. He took a direct shot at woke:

I am voting red this cycle and the motivational factor is my children. I do not want them subject to any more mandates and disruptions, I don’t want them bombarded with gender theory, in their schools, I don’t want parental rights to keep being eroded.

When I first saw the Moon-rise photos, it gave me a deep spiritual feeling that lingers even today. Such a beautiful planet. Sucha wonderful home for us. All the resources for humans to prosper. How can we not be impressed?

D., 22, comes from a “white trash middle-class family ” (her words). Her parents and siblings were destroyed by alcohol, drugs, and gambling, surviving for years on public assistance. She’s white, conservative and attended a predominantly black high school across the river from Boston.

She is open and looking for ways to grow. She is intelligent and brave. I’ve only seen her for a handful of Christmases. During the past few years we’ve developed an email relationship. I love her and my heart goes out to her.

She’s doing great with UPW. I’ll grant the Tony world is a strange world of people dancing, clapping, smiling, jumping, high-fiving, hugging and making noise at frequent intervals. A convention-center-sized island of love, fun and freedom. Furthermore, the days are 14-15 hours long. I myself was not prepared for my first UPW experience. I was frightened and horrified most of the first day.

The point is to rewire one’s body and mind for high-energy positive states, which are used as the foundation for making psychological changes. As goofy as it sounds, it works. D. got into it and handled her first firewalk like a trooper.

D. came to UPW because I invited her and paid her way. She’s not as desperate as I was the first time, so it’s not quite the revelation it was for me. But she got good stuff, it’s already shifted the way she sees the world, and I can tell we’ve become lifelong friends.

I think that Trump sucks up all the energy in every room, no matter what. And even someone as skilled as a politician and smart policy wise as DeSantis can’t overcome that. He can’t…
