I have much the same problem with auditory comprehension because of hearing loss. As a result, I have lost jobs, resigned from other jobs and also resigned from certain committees and organizations. A large part of living normally depends on being able to communicate. Intellectually, I can still function, but processing verbal communication is a problem. I recognize this and totally accept it. Mr. Fetterman’s willingness to accept an elected position, assuming that he wins, shows his refusal to accept that he is probably not up to the job. He’s certainly not up to performing the job at a level worthy of being elected to do it.

That said, it’s something of a mystery to me why “Withnail & I” works. Which is why I’m curious to hear from others (not Art Deco whose judgment I could have predicted while under general anesthesia).

None of the characters are appealing, least of all Withnail (played by Richard E. Grant) who is a broke, bitter, alcoholic, out-of-work young actor. His nameless flatmate does the voice-over and is somewhat normal, but largely puts up with and to some extent colludes with the craziness around him.

Bruce Robinson, the writer/director, based the film on a quite colorful, weird companion. He boiled down several months of life with his friend into a single week, so some of the film’s power comes from compression.

Because the film was based unflinchingly on real life at a particularly odd cultural juncture (1969), the audience finds itself outside comfortable film stereotypes, though closer to what it may remember from that time.

Robinson’s writing is wonderful and his direction was creative. A classic early scene shows Withnail, out of wine and desperate for booze, taking a squirt of lighter fluid into his mouth. The actor, Grant, didn’t know, but Robinson had substituted vinegar into the lighter fluid tin, so Grant’s surprised reaction was genuine.

Then Grant raises the stakes and demands anti-freeze. The Nameless Narrator responds:

You bloody fool. You should never mix your drinks.

Well. If that doesn’t convince the Gentle Reader this is a must-see film, I don’t know what will!
