As usual, you dial everything down to suit your purposes. For instance, the concerning thing about Ruby was not that he shot Oswald, but that he did so in a police station surrounded by policemen.

If a foreign leader had been assassinated, then the assassin promptly murdered in a police station before he could testify, most reflective people would consider the possibility there had been a coup d’etat.

There truly was fanatical, murderous, right-wing hate in the South at the time. Medgar Evers had only been assassinated the summer before JFK. The Alabama Church bombing only nine weeks before.

By a generous definition of the term, there were about 30 political murders over a period of 13 years, all occurring in a section of the country whose population in 1960 was just north of 6 million. One was someone an ordinary person is likely to have heard of and two others were semi-public figures with a local reputation. The scale of the violence was more along the lines of the Quebec Liberation Front than of any Eurotrash terror group active ca. 1976. AFAICT James Earl Ray was the only assailant who has been proved to have crossed state lines to kill one of these people.
