In re the tunnels: the Israelis have no lack of will, but only recently have gotten the hang of finding the tunnels before they are put into action.
However, no matter how willing our Border Patrol is to find tunnels, there has to be back-up and support from other agencies in the government.
And finally: it is not impossible that the people tasked with finding tunnels have been paid off by the tunnelers.

There have been all sorts of stories about the dozens and dozens tunnels that have been dug in an effort to defeat border walls--for example, terrorist tunnels along borders with Israel, and narco-trafficker tunnels along the U.S. southern border.

In the U.S. the usual MO is apparently to find a building on the Mexican side that is very close to the border, to buy a building on the U.S. side that is also very close to the border and, then, to dig a tunnel under the border itself that connects these two locations.

From the pictures I've seen, some of these smuggler's tunnels--in some cases many hundreds of feet long--can be quite elaborate--with air handling equipment, lighting, and even small gauge tracks on their floors, so that--in addition to people using these tunnels--heavily laden carts full of drugs, weapons, and explosives, or whatever can be pushed from one location to the other.

The thing is, I thought that between ground penetrating radar, the capabilities and high resolution of satellite imagery, and electronic sensors for sound and vibration, it ought to be easy to detect such tunnels--especially when they were under construction--and to shut them down.

It would also seem logical for authorities to monitor the sale, use, and modification of buildings along both sides of the border.

Apparently detecting such tunnels is not that easy because, in the stories I have seen about such tunnels, most of them have been described as being completely built and, apparently, to have been in operation for some time before they were "discovered."

On the other hand, perhaps rather than a lack of technology, it might be a lack of will, with detecting such tunnels given lower priority that other things.

Yes: a lot of people have entertained the idea, that Mikhail Gorbachev was to the late great Soviet Union, what Barack Obama is to the surviving United States — the leader who reforms so many things so quickly that his country suddenly disappears.

Interesting comparison.

RE: "I assume there’s a way to climb or tunnel under any wall. But that’s no reason not to make it more difficult to do."
Indeed. It's just a first step, but we are unlikely to get even that. The Ruling Class wants open borders, and that's what they're going to get. That's why they're called a "Ruling Class".

Personally, I'd like to build two fences with a mile or two in between. I'd fill the space between with a mine field or nuclear waste. The message is: "This wall is for your protection. You can go over or under it, but it's a bad idea."
